Gimmicks like this are all very well - but under the surface, the Tube is an antiquated system with peeling paint and 50 year old trains.
You can't even use your mobile phone on the Underground for heaven's sake. The Metro system in Newcastle has had mobile transmitters underground for nearly 5 years now, and Glasgow has just gone fully mobile. What has taken London so long?
was in London myself on 7 january 2008--i absolutely love these digital adverts. Did you also see the updated digitals at piccadilly circus--very 21st century.

wtf u mean waste of electricity? ITS made to work without ANYTHING .. if u move from 1 side of the room to the next it changes because of the slides in it .. when u go bak it reverses .. ITS NOT POWER U DUMBFUCKS
The Underground are replacing the printed card adverts now with LCD flat panel screens which use electricity, just like your TV at home. If , for example, 50 screens are in each escalator shaft consuming 3KW (3,000 watts) per hour and then multiply that across the network that is a considerable amount of power being consumed for something that is not essential. I THINK YOU ARE THE DUMBFUCK!
I thought the goverment were telling us to cut back on energy use to save the planet. A waste of electricity and only going to help in making the underground even hotter. There are now thousands and thousands of illuminated displays on the underground, where once there were paper posters.
i saw those when i went to london in may 08 and there was a star flying through different backgrounds. i thought to myself.. what has london become? theyve even got digital advertisements on the sides of buses now
What a waste of electricity, still i must say its a great way to advertise more crap we dont need, hospitals are still filthy and people sit in their own shit on street level, but never fear CBS is here to numb your mind!
Well yes, its only a matter of time. As these are on the London Underground its probably not that hard to make it identify peoples "oyster cards" as they pass sensors and target the adverts as required.
Nice to see someone appreciates some of our work...we make some of the adverts that go on these. They are often shot in a custom manner for the screens, in HD and taking into account the angle of the screens, and what message you will see as you travel. But we think its worth the effort
Must be a great job being able to play with this type of media.
When object moved from one panel to the next are these the same video just starting slightly delayed OR is each video made specifically for each frame?
How did you do the "Rocky Balboa" movement as he walks up panels yet the back ground is different on each panel he goes through.
They are vandal proof, at least thats the plan. The old paper posters are not at all so I guess even if someone did manage to smash one then you just replace the safety glass.
ide trade that clever use of tech for a flying car...

Dear Austin,
You are quite right to say it is 'wasteful'.
Obviously these were thought a bright idea by someone with easy money prior to October 2008.
cheers.

@JEKYLLMYHYDE Isn't really a waste of electricity when the advertising pays for it.

So this is were the money goes ...
In a matter of years we have a chip in our body that reacts to the screens and causes targeted advertising ...
It's funny to watch, but it's only a matter of time to see this system being used for personal advertising ...

but if its busy.. wont the advert boards go into overdrive due to the amount of cards being detected...

Very nice, especially in the beginning with the car zooming by.

Those panels are both clever and amazing.
It wouldn't work here in the states though. They would be vandalized and 'grafittied up' within minutes of being put up.
