@lyss0414 Whoever said punching babies in the face was bad? fucking society man. Freedom of speech read up on it. I intend on punching babies in the face for the rest of my life.
I just happened upon this video - this song has been my favorite for longer than I can remember, and I had never heard this whole Sinner's Sonnet controversy. That is insane. Nevertheless, even with the stolen melody/chordal structure in the Whitman song, it still pales in comparison to the lyrics and harmonies in Landlocked Blues.
@bware0fme 'I'm Wide Awake It's Morning' was released in 2005, and Andrew Whitman's song in 2009. You'd think if Whitman thought Oberst stole his song, he'd get his version out into the public's eye right away and file suit (Think Joe Satriani vs. Coldplay). At least that should be your rational as an unheard songwriter if an indie great plagiarized your song...I'm betting the tune is an Oberst original.
@therealwillgant I heard Sinner's Sonnet on Pandora, and I was like.......you totally stole a Bright Eyes song dude! I suppose it could be the other way around, I wonder who came first.
@bware0fme i couldnt see this guy stealing music, although i do not know him as a person in real life, i have sensed a strong feeling of passion in his lyrics, i think he legitimately makes music because he loves doing it.. not because he will make money off of it.therefore there would be no motive for stealing another's lyrics.. infact it would be antithetical to the whole point of writing genuine music for him to not create the music himself.i dont think he would defraud himself like that
First thing I got on vinyl when I was like 11, lyrics are so fucking deep

took a tune . made his own lyrics. put his own emotions and memories to it. That's called a nod at another person's talent.

Oberst and Whitman run in common circles. Chances are the sex was consensual...

@therealwillgant It's not like Andrew Whitman is very well-known either. His band is amateur: they actually mostly do covers.
