my needle fish wont eat i had him for 4 days we put some feeder fish (red roseys). we put them in there for 4 hours and he seems to swims by them and stare at them he is in a 20 gallon tank he is about 5 to 6 inches and he keeps running up and down the wall and running into it some one please help me !
yo truthfully, mine did the same exact same thing yours did!its just becasue they are still getting used to the aqarium from the bumpy ride home!So i see you you posted this 4 weeks ago so yours should be used to it and have already eaten right?
also wanted to say that i have the exact same thing you have!20 gallon tank, and mine was running into the wall as well,lol..i upgraded mine and put some pebbles in it and recently jus added some background paper(this helps alot with them running into the wall)!eventually though,me and you will have to get a bigger tank as i think this may...have something to do with the eating process but im not sure.i jus read alot on these!i have two by the way,lol
Mine is kind of dumb since I just got him and put roseys in there last night. He went for the biggest one first but couldn't fit it in his mouth so he just let it go... and it died... then he finally ate a different one
ok i gotcha!bigger tank(20 gallons or more),and thats it!That ten gallon is to small for him to move around and he will never learn the experience to hunt his food due to aquarium space issues!you can call it frustrated if you will!also, his food needs to be setup in a different tank!needlefish needs for their food to hit the water and thats when they strike it!my two are in a 20 gallon and i put two minnows in their for both of em to eat and its aggrivating because they eat them when they wanna!
Your oscar ate it? I have medium sized oscars with mine and they have been fine together for weeks now. How long did you wait before you feed them, I feed them once a week, im just concerened now b/c i never knew it could happen
i bought a 5 inch one from my local pet store and returned him back after a few weeks. those fish are boring as hell. all they do is sit at the surface unless it's feeding time. waste of tank space for sures.
Yeah I know what you mean, I have one but I got it for free, not really a waste of a fish because all they need is surface area and they only swim up top. Just get another fish to go with it, I've got it with a pike cichlid. (sorry for replying to a 9 month old post.)
i just bought 2 needle fsih today and i heard they are really hard to take care of. because when they are hungry they will gegt exited and move really fast around the tank, bump into the class and break their peak. is the true.
now i've seen these fish for sale @ petstores and what not but does it only eat live feeder fish like that? Not sayin its mean (its what would happen if they were in their natural habitat anyway) its just that if i ever got one, i'd hate having to do that lol. Anyways though, excellent fish tank setup, and cool fish none the less so 5/5 from me
I had a Needlefish that unfortunately died this morning. When we bought him we were told that they only ate live food. I have read incidences online about people having Needlish that would accept dead fish, but I wouldn't bet on it if you got one.
Hard to say since I didn't have mine that long. Without a doubt they're more sensitive than something like a guppy, but all fish can thrive as long as the water is maintained properly and the tank is big enough.
I guess it comes down to how often your willing to clean out a largish tank to keep the water parimiters in check for the species Some water, depending on its narual pH, is easier to maintain than others.
how big they get

poor little needlefish, his teeth are probably not fully grown yet. without them that fish is going to wriggle all the way down.....
