That's actually how I write songs mostly. But when it comes to the chorus I can't figure one out. The songs, an lyrics come to me, even if they don't necisarily relate to me. So I can never pinpoint what the songs supposed to be saying. To many meanings clash. Any advice in that area? Anyone?

Very good information. I have years of experience writing music and I use the methods explained in this video and they work very well for me. And I disagree with the last comment about having a "natural talent" for writing music. I say that if you have a strong desire to write . . then you'll figure out a way to do it , even if it does not come "naturally" .. to overcome say... some mental block or disability like not being able to focus very long.

i always do :

first write some random words down...

than i start playing guitar..a riff with a mood that fits in with the words..than when i have a bridge chorus and verse,intro...... il start singing things..just melodies...not words..than start write lyrics down and record all of it..and finaly some little melodies with guitar and piano to the song to keep it cool and you wanna listen it more.

i hate writing first..cause how can you know it will fit in your song....music first better..

When I write on the guitar it is the same for me. But i feel that guitar narrows down many tonechoices and chords as you tend to use the normal chords your fingers are used to. That's why I try to write as much music as I can in my head, because in my head I dont think that "these chords are easier to play". But basically, just try different things until it sounds good, and when it sounds good it probably is good. It is healthy to reflect whether the melodies already exists or not aswell.
