  • ...and yet a colt 1911 could end any of them...

  • @BoJezy yes a colt 1911 can kill them but a sword can kill also the man with a 1911. the contrast is the 1911 man uses that thing so he can do his purpose from a distance. The man with sword must com in contact so his sword is effective. In other words the two have different courage.

  • a man who lives for war, his heart is at peace

a man who lives for peace, his heart is at war

  • @proudmanm1224 Wise and true words you speak indeed.

  • I'm practicing jiu-jitsu tomorrow is my second lesson, so I'm only a white belt but it's never too late to start(I'm 14) and I like to learn an old art like jiu-jitsu it's not only hand to hand combat but I will learn to handle a sword and Bo too.

  • where can i find this dojo of master take?

thanks and have a nice day^^p

  • this dude is old school

  • 7:55 - Um, Miyamoto Musashi?

  • @JustAnAdjunct Maybe. But historically, it can be argued that Musashi used all that he learned by the end of life to find peace. Perhaps his life was one journey away from "distortion".

  • @dbaa23

From the Ground Book: "The warrior is different in that studying the Way of Strategy is based on overcoming men. By victory gained in crossing swords with individuals, or enjoining battle with large numbers, we can attain power and fame for ourselves or our lord. This is the virtue of strategy."

Sounds pretty "distorted" to me. I don't blame the guy or anything. He lived in a different age than we do, so I don't know why people feel the need to justify the way he conducted himself.

  • @dbaa23

He didn't "find peace", he probably just lost the energy to fight when he got old (plus he had a track record that satisfied him and hence less of a need to prove something by winning duels). Reading the "Book of Five Rings" I didn't get the impression he viewed the world the same way modern samurai do. He was really good at what he did - fighting people, not just physically but mentally as well. Perhaps that doesn't make him a good role model in this age, but again - that's irrelevant.

  • I know right you'd think for a documentary they'd at least get the names right!

  • Naginata, not halberd, right guys?

  • I am inspired by samurai like this. I agree with this guy.

  • Thank you for making this series available on YouTube. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I think this is the same school that was featured in the NOVA documentary on swordmaking.

  • Greatest Koryu!

  • Thank you for this

  • it's a shame that we've gone from fantastic documentaries like this to the garbage we see on Deadliest Warrior, the History Channel, etc

  • Thank you very nice

  • do you really belive in this samurai fairytales?Maybe king arthur and the knights of the round table were real too?

  • @alikemountain well the spells are all nonsense but the history is well documented so do some research and cure your ignorance.

  • WICKED freeze frame at the end!

  • its a shame we invented guns, no honor in them

  • very informative, thank you...

  • That muthafucka at 1:49, he doin that thang, pardon my linguistics.

  • @theScytheofGod I'm sorry, for some reason, everything makes perfect sense to me today.

You know, I mean the techniques.

  • Who else got annoyed when he kept calling the Naginata a Halberd?

  • @teagm003 Initially I was, but then I realized that East Asians do not have dragons, daimyos did not live in castles and the chinese monarch is not called an emperor. Its quite common to use substitute words for subjects that are similar in another culture to the speaker.

  • @dragondisaster actually Japanese dont have dragons in their culture.the dragons are achinese culture adoption.

  • thank you so much!

  • oh shit naruto!!

  • it's all so beautiful...breathtaking in my opinion...

  • HOLY SHIT THEY'RE BEAST!!!! 7 year and im still suprised XD

  • HOLY SHIT THEY'RE BEAST!!!!

  • i believe it's a glaive rather than a halberd

  • @o0moonbladeZ0o

Yes, glaive is a more correct name for naginata then halberd.

  • @nasgaf, LOL, I'm definitely stealing that.

  • I recognize the hand signs, this style has influenced "Naruto" greatly,i like how the animators kept a sense of tradition in the anime.

  • Thank you very much for sharing the 4 parts of this program. Ataki-san and his philosophy in relation to bushido and his complete dedication and expertise in this ancient art, make me wish that I had known of him when I lived in Japan, so that I could have sort him out. I have a great attachment to Japanese people and their culture, and now that I speak the language quite fluently, I will most certainly make an effort to pay my respects to him in future. What a wonderful documentary !

  • Thank you for uploading !

  • Ahhhh... thank you soooo much for sharing these videos with us!!! loved it!!!... I'm wondering if women are accepted in that school and if so, how much does it cost to learn from that master, in Japan?

I also would like to know if there's such school in Canada? if so, where? basically references for a school here... coz Japan is very far from here... but if there's none, how does it work to accommodate international students?

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me...

  • baru dimensi ke 5 cupu lu ah

  • Interesting documentary. I wish there was a similar one about ninjutsu.

Oh wait, it is supposed to be secret, I forgot.

  • Again, thank you very much.

  • This documentary was absolutely wonderful.

  • is this Kenjutsu? cause i really want to learn it or is it called Bushido?

  • This is Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu. Kenjutsu means way of the sword. Bushido was the samurai mindset.

  • thanks alot! :)

  • No problem. Always willing to help a fellow martial arts student

  • Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

  • very enlightening - but in a situation where you've got a man armed with a katana and a man armed with a bow staff or a spear - wouldn't one of the factors in the fight be the katana's ability to cut and damage a wooden weapon? The katas they were practicing didn't seem to take this into account..

  • a good question.

generally speaking it is very hard to cut through a piece of oak staff that size with a katana even in ideal circumstances; it is possible, but it is extremely difficult to do so especially during the action of a fight.

In the same vain, it is difficult against a trained swordsman; but possible, to break or bend a sword beyond use with a blow from a heavy oak staff.

Neither weapon is indestructible, but generally they will both maintain integrity for the duration of a fight.

  • @csthundercat

Katana vs spear is such a joke fight...

If i have katana i would not even draw it.

I would use just my arms to get a grip on the spear or the stick than the enemy is doomed to lose his weapon and thus Fail.

As insane as it sounds its always as difficult for the one controlling big weapon to sustain it over a fight than to use it to win. If u try to go with ur katana against a longer weapon ur also doomed to fail.

  • a staff is not a spear..a spear is harder to destroy with a sword because a properly designed and fitted japanese spear has a long nakago which extends deep (sometimes over 3 feet or more) into the shaft; however what really matters is the skill of the two opponents. A man with a longer range weapon such as a spear or halbard certainly has a good advantage over a man with only a sword - which is essentially a side arm - but nothing is a given! Many a good spearman suffered defeat by the sword.

  • @serafar Bwahahahahahahaha! Oh man, that's - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh god, it hurts.

  • @ZantarV

What is so funny, Its not like u can draw ur katana out ur saya faster than the spear?

Hence u dont need to draw out the stick/spear cos ur buttle ready once u grab it with ur hand...I just mention my thought and explained why i would go for it. Feel free to express ur thought.

  • @serafar A decent spear user will thrust quickly and not leave his weapon out there for you to grab, nor will he let you close enough to grab it before he attacks. Besides, even if you do grab it, he's not going to just let go or stop attacking, and even if you do manage to disarm him, he's not just going to stand around looking foolish as you draw your katana, he'll probably start grappling. With a katana, you have a chance to deflect his weapon from a safer distance, THEN close in, armed.

  • @serafar

It takes as much time to draw a KATANA as it takes for the spear wielder to spin it in your direction.

That's why in iaijutsu they practice nukitsuke

  • @MrSpanky87 it was more likely that a katana would get stuck in the haft and the swordsman would be killed, especially if using Japanese white oak, which is extremely strong. there are kata for deflecting a sword cut at an angle, rather than at 90 degrees, so it wouldn't cut all the way through. plus, an ashigaru might be carrying a junk sword and is probably not a master of cutting. but there are stories of naginata blades being cut off of the weapon

  • nice video..i learned some good stuff !

  • Tiny markers! :D <3

  • *applause*

  • i have learntnalot from this video

    thankyou

  • Oh, come on, to all those hotheads talking about the United States (not America!), shut up.

The documentary is talking about Japan, For Time's sake! I wonder if those people need to calm down and learn a thing or two from the documentary.

  • Excellent, excellent, excellent!

    Informational, entertaining, and mind-boggling.

If you've got any more of this kind of thing Akab6 please share it with us!

  • such a great documentary

    thank you

  • it's realy great but in english subtitles is an error...the kuji in hand seals are mudras not mantras=]

  • @zanpaktou666

there are both - mudras and mantras. Each mudra corresponds to a certain mantra.

  • thanks for uploading =)

  • nasgaf think of what you are saying.

  • thank you very much, Akab6

  • Thank you very much for posting the documentary.

  • @nasgaf so true.

  • i want to study in that school and learn how to use sword...

  • Thank you for the documentary!

  • japan had the most amzing history, i can't believe they modernized it, they had peace during the samurai era. Good thing they never let it die.

  • whoa, i feel some naruto spells going on in the beginning ahahaha

  • Very Nice, Beautiful.

  • a true art ,,, very beautiful,, those who have never been past beside this just look and dont write that you dont know what you are writing, coz your lazy ass is beside your computer and and you have never had suck courage to hold a sword,

coz those guys carry sword who have respect, equality, honesty and all those things which shows a good sigh, not those who write bullshit and disapoint people,

    adigato

if it seems right to you.. pls, shut up..! kcpalooza

  • Just as yourself - totally useless ;-)

  • you seem to have missed the point.

  • What made you think that XD

  • a wonderful teaching to all martial artists -- beginners and masters alike. fight indeed is the last resort, and killing is evil.. i bow to the producer of this video.. and thank you

  • if anyone wants to listen to the music from this, type in "Edo Lullaby" or hokusai. nice tune.

  • Great doc. Thank you!

  • thank you for posting

  • Thanks for uploading. This documentary is very inspirational.

  • its not just the swordfight its also the discipline and the morals of the samurai that people want to learn..

  • yes but sadly this master died and i cannot find a good kempo or akiajutsu around where i live so i go to akido and they teach the same patience and virtues

  • It's to improve the everyday skills of a swordsmith. Like meditation ar fighting.

  • brainrod... if I had a penny for every person that has said that to me I'd be rich. I always ask them "Do you have a gun on you now?" They always answer "Of course not." But a swordsman doesn't need a sword. Their skills can help them with or without a sword in a life of death situation.

  • this is the best answer that I ever saw .

    thanks . :)

  • same reason people lern guitar....kind of....lol

its a extention of the body, reprezents the soul.......its complicated, though you wouldnt use a katana in the street....there are many other applications useing the techniques ....

  • you are seeing things only by fisic way , but the pratic of sword is spirituality too .

  • um...maybe u should proof read your post BEFORE u post it soulmindseeker. lol. putz.

  • Great documentary. Long live the true samurai spirit!

  • This is the best documentary film I have ever seen about kenjutsu (iaijutsu etc.).See (and hear) a "samurai" is much different than reading about them.I am happy to see there are still people who do these martial atrs really serious. The Way of the Samurai cannot disappear.

  • thanks for this. nice documentary. kaushik sharma.

  • They had to kill each other 1450-1615, which prompted the birth of transcendental 2-sword techniques. Musashi's Nitenichiryu is intact in Fukuoka and Nagoya. Otake's school is close from Narita Airport. Cab drivers would know where. Pay a visit/enroll at these most established dojos. Book of Five Rings is a fantastic reading for any sportman and can be found at any bookstore. The ultimate secrets of these two schools aren't written down in books. Have to pay schoolmasters for that.

  • It is important to realize that Musashi saw himself as a student and went around pursuing an education. He was not blood-thirsty and, with the exception of when he was very young and admittedly possessed of an ignorant stupidity, he never killed unless it was unavoidable. It is said that he often avoided matches where a life could be lost. The people Sensei Itaki believes are to be despised were those who went about fighting for the sole purpose of seeking fame or the pleasure of taking life.

  • watch the last samurai lol ninjas get pwned

  • only in the movies brother

  • In real life historic events?? you sound like another person who jerks it to being a ninja right? ninjas had no honor and stabbed people in the back, samurai would rather die than to be such a coward. thats the facts. but some how i bet you have something dumb to say

  • apparently youve never heard of akechi mitsuhide and how he betrayed nobunanga. or the hundreds of other samurai who where constantly betraying one another

  • besides one time events such as that, IN GENERAL samurai faced their enemy with no fear of death and ninjas hid like rats, so put technique and fighting styles aside and admit the facts of what Samurai and Ninjas GENERALLY did.

  • samurai were the same as everybody else. there was badass samurai and pussy samurai. just like now theres badass marines and spec forces etc and the guy whos just there cus he has to be. they werent super heros or great philosophers who sat around writing haikus and pondering life. at least not until aftr about 1630

  • you should study samurai more, read hagakure, but yes i agree about how there are badass and pussies but samurai were a lot more honorable, a marine woudn't have the philisophical mind to understand bushido and wouldn't be able to commit suppuku because of that, samurai were as unique as only a FEW others in all of history such as the 300 greek spartans, the same situation happened with the last samurai, seigo in southern japan there is a statue of him.

  • Hummm... "my my my" you seem a lil derange and incompetent with insufficient knowledge of the japaness samurai. Samurai hired shinobi to assassinate "high ranking officals" have you forgotten? you must never knew. not every samurai were noble men and on the other hand, some samurai were ninja. hummm... bet you didn't know that either. I feel I'm wasting my time replying back to you, but through every situation lye's the possability of enlightenment... go with god

  • although i respect your intelligence on the subject and reverence to our creator, dont think me off as deranged i knew that some samurai where ninjas and they hired help, but that is not within strict adherence to bushido, honor and courage wouldnt allow you to use CERTAIN ninjutsu techniques since there was no honor in it, what you seem to "not know" is that not all samurai followed bushido at all and were no good shit head ronin, not to say there weren't good ronin who did.

  • May I implement that ninja has and have a code named ninpo. Remember samurai were the conquering elites that wrote history books with their way of life, and systematic values and perceptions like white america. HIS-Story according to whites are the superior beings just like the samurai. If you had a different concept or philospy you were considerd the outcast or the inferior beings. "That being said" use your comman sense.

  • wrong, your talking about corrupt cowardly ronin or maybe even shogunates that wrote history in bias. REAL samurai (servant if you didnt know already) who followed bushido, would rather commit suppuku before lying about what they had accomplished. its like the argument btween REAL christians and right wing conservatives like g bush. plus like bruce lee said there is no right way, you have to mix them all up, do whats right for you, and bushido is right for me, i will look more into ninpo.

  • there isnt a such thing as a real samurai or a real person, fyi the term is virtue. police officers suppose to live by a code of ethics too, some do and some dont own their own freewill. I knew about bushido since the 80s it's nothing new to me. what samurai art do you study? also if yes, how long have you been studying? you have alot to learn, but so does all of us maybe thats the reason for our journey in life...Arigato

  • well your right, not a term, im using it figuratively to show like you said there can be real or shit cops, i have only been studying Bushido for a few years, but the learning resources for what i study along with the internet didn't come out like it has but since the 90s i studied Otake Resuke, tsunemoto, read a lot by musashi too. its hard to find training where im at. its just hard to live by bushido here too. and your right as musashi says, you learn til you die. Arigato.

  • Apparently you don't read too much history, apart from what black panthers told you? You should read up more. Western countries nowadays give most unbiased view and analyze on history. And stop putting SS combination in, if you don't know what it is. Nazis were destroyed by WHITES. Whites built America and changed it. And stop putting white supremacy arguments. You're just another black racist. Remember that tens of thousands white men gave their live in US civil war. White this, white that.

  • Whites built America? YE RIGHT!

Ten of thousands?? Dude there already over a million Iraq's DEAD..

Fucking American titty sissy baby's.. Fuckkers are ruining the world.. Fuck u redneck's, no fuck you all.. Its all the same shit anyways repub or demo..TITTY SISSY FUCKING BABY'S!

Fuck Obama too .. Fucker aint done SHIT since he got in, people still dieing LEFT RIGHT AND FUCKING CENTER !

Greeting from the Gold Coast Australia

  • I'm talking about the history. I'm not defending their activities in Iraq. The causes of war were simply outrageous. And I feel sorry for Iraqis too, but there's absolutely nothing I can do about it.

P.S. I'm not American, nor redneck

  • Sudo , your ignorance and anger is deep.... what got turned down by an american female or what? Amazng how racism and ignorance go hand in hand Lachausis makes a lot of sense, and I dont see why you gotta justify yourself to this ignorant fuck! Sudo, grow a pair and grow up.

  • You are confusing Racsim with Nationalism.. There are many races from America.. I never made comment on any of them. U seen the news lately?? You say i have hate and anger?? WELL YES DICKHEAD! There's still thousands of people dieing every week .

American ladys? where u pull this shit.. Not one thing was said to counter what i said.. THAT'S PURE HATE & blind faith in a country the rest of the world detests..Obama made all these promises and what he done?? NOTHING!!!

    You just to brainwashed!

  • dude you gotta calm down and stop hating on america. all have their weaknesses and no one is perfect. you trash talk about the war but you dont consider the other side - such as the millions in afghan and iraq who are thankful. how are you supposed to fight a war when the enemy hides behind civilian? do you just give up then and give them right of way? and fuck you for your ignorance... you sit there hating on a country that has given more towards global aid then anyone else!!!

  • we give billions to support and help cure AIDS, MOLARIA, and poverty. we cured the wrold of small pox. we set up the U.N and we set up the WORLD BANK - which by the way your australia likes to use!! but you dont think of these things you just focus on one downfall and you hate. the U.S keeps the world economy moving almost more then any other country - take us out and the globe would take an enormous hit sending billions into poverty. but here u are with balls to talk shit. u r a low life.

  • World military goes like this.

    # 1 US army

    #2 US airforce

    #3 US NAVY!

U may spend alot saving lives.. You spend a hole lot more TAKING them... U gonna try and glorify the world bank?? THATS HALF THE REASON THE WORLDS FUCKED.. The U.N is useless, didnt work in Sudan or the Congo.....Haha and the US kills the world economy Also.. Typical blind brainwashed yank...

One DOWNFALL???? Korea,Vietnam, afganistan TWICE!, iraq TWICE, south America LOTS! Isreal??? The list goes on

  • k first of all i wasnt born here and trust me when i tell you ive traveled probably more then you ever will and lived in several differnt ocuntries.

    2nd - you forgot U.S marines.

tell me... give me some exapmles with the world bank? im personally aware of most of its history and i can tell you that while there are problems with it, it has also chieved things that couldnt be done without it. how does the U.S killl the world economy? pik up a few books by some economists and read em.

  • You missed like 5 other points i made.. U.N? WAR ON TERRORISM?? WAR ON DRUGS??!!! Yas are plan old war mongers plain and simple..Guatemala ring some bells??

  • points? ill answer all of them just for you ok. our armed forces are no. 1. thats true. we spend more money taking them - i dont agree. im not at all glorifying the world bank but you must be pretty ignorant not to know what it actually has accomplished - eradication of sall pox, which suddenly iwth you isnt an issue now - thats millions upon millions of peple and billions in potential. but of course, according to you - thats nothing big, right? the U.N useless? ..........--->

  • the U.N cant solve everything and yes, sometimes it fails big and small. every political/social/economical organization that large has holes. it represents 5 dominant industrialized countries with room for the whole world every two years. the U.N is responsible for the open global trading system - you what that is smartass?? you have any idea of the benefits? the fact that now, as you sit there and type this shit onto youtube - you're benefiting from global tradings system........>>>

  • andother U.N thing... the MARSHALL PLAN... u know whatt that is?? it funds the European reconstruction and promotion of nuclear arms control along with elimination of ozone-depleting chemicals. feel any dumber now? ill keep going just for you then. U.S kills economy... well you should be able to figure out from what ive just said that thats obviously not true. has it hurt the economy because of the war... yes, of course, but thats 8 years of war vs. over 60 years of fueling world economy.>>

  • israel?? i dont know what to say on behalf of this retarded attempt of a statement. a world super power has many responsibilities and it cant please the world. not to mention you are a freaking extremist. yeah we've fought wars, and some were bad i admit. im not saying we are saints, but many were for people who couldnt do anything. darfur, rwanda... DID AUSTRALIA DO ANYTHING???? you are so quick to criticise but you overlook too much.....>>>

  • not to mention we created IMF. im not aruging that we are saints, im saying that we cant please all. pakistan is fighting for survival from the sam epeople we went to war with.. SHOULD THEY STOP?? should pakistan be wiped out from the world? is that what you belive? they also kill innocent ppl. casualties of war - and its only because the enemy hide behind civilians. or should i just compare what U.S has doen for the globe to what australia has done - NOTHING.

  • the problem with you is that you talk alot of shit when you dont have ROOM to talk shit. you hate on U.S yet your own country will never even touch the amount of global support and aid the U.S has done, not to mention continues to do. U.N - millennium development goals?? look that up too. and i was fucking with you when i mentioned marines. again, im not saying we're saints but we could also be like china - and torture tibet ,or like N.K and starve our ppl. u just need an education.

  • ... do you know anything about world affairs? or do you wach the news and just regergitate?. i could site you australias history before you can spell out the alphabet. and im not defending the war, im defending the concept that despite the war, the U.S has done a rediculous amount of good for the world. the kind of good no one else could have doen because there arent as economically stable. u missed all my points - go back to the pub where u came from.

  • OH and 2nd Marines.. Thanks for pointing out the very thing you are dismissing...

  • Very inspiring, thank you for sharing this.

  • He admitts a single swordsman is highly unlikely able to match plural opponents. Wonder if a swordfighter with one or two swords could be effective against a skilled spear or naginata. I want them to use plastic or vinyl weapons to prove how these techniques are really practical. I hear there was a man called Musashi who killed fifty in a single battle around 1600. Compared to that guy this master seems like a meek schoolmaster. Thank you and BBC, great reminder about more recent bushido.

  • Musashi was a really great strategist. But still, very little you hear of his life is true, mostly fiction.

also, this man did say in a previous episode, that people always believe in stories about great swordsmen who struck down tons of enemies etc. ...fiction. :)

  • Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
