I disagree with your view on Stalin. He was pragmatic. He brought the USSR into the modern day and turned it into a superpower. He managed to industrialize the state within decades to compete with nations which took centuries to industrialize. This rapid industrialization saved Russia from being conquered by Germany. It allowed it to have a say in the global stage. Does that make Stalin's actions ethical and justified? The popular answer is a definite no, but he did what he had to.
