Back before the internet, I used to watch the end credits of DH whenever I caught it just to hear this piece. It perfectly captures the mixed feelings Harry has after he's offed Scorpio.
@pjm311 Mixed feelings? He threw his badge into the water. A symbolic gesture of proving that the chief (and everyone else) was right. He was not cut out to be a cop. What he saw everyday was too much for him without taking the law into his own hands. Thus, he quit. This is why sometimes I wish there wasn't sequels. Because it disproves the point the filmmakers were trying to make. The film doesn't glorify vengeance, it shows that people like Harry are wrong, and the law is right.
@tom89zigman Yes, that as well. But the overall message that the director was trying to make was: the system may be flawed, but the system is still right in the sense that putting the law into your own hands is wrong. Harry understood this after committing murder, and quit his job after being enlightened. By making sequels, it totally negates the lesson the film was trying to make. But, for what it's worth, I still love the films. I just look at it as a "what if" sorta thing lol.
Thanks for the post. Seeing Dirty Harry for the first time as a teen, and how it ends, and how I felt, with my mouth slightl open thinking "Mannnn.........", then this incredibly peaceful tune, sounding like all was ok again now that Scorpio was gone, was just awesome. Few films have EVER cought the emotion of the moment, quite like the DH ending.
Oh, lovely! Thanks so much! Every time I listen to this piece of music I feel such overwhelming sadness for Harry. Yeah, he finally got Scorpio but he had to go through so much crap to do it... he's so disgusted and defeated at the end...
I felt so emotional right at the end of the movie where Harry throws his badge into the water and walks off and this little piece played quietly behind.To me,this one minute long music is million times better than most of the crap music out there today.
Love this one. The music just made the ending with its eerie-ness. Lalo would reuse it for the sequels but didn't have the impact it does here. Thanks for posting!
In Magnum Force there is no explanation why Harry is back on the force after quitting the force in the end of Dirty Harry.

@tylerdurden3891 I thought he quit because he didn't like the system and the fact that criminals get away with everything.

@OsanBlackCat5RS
More like the beginning of the 70's, Dirty Harry is from 1971.
I wouldn't call it gloomy either, it's a hauntingly beautiful piece of music.
