it's been said that most training techniques and supplements today helps the MMA fighters but Bruce Lee has been using similar techniques and even supplements 20 years before any MMA fighers even started. If I'm not mistaken Bruce Lee also studied kiniseolgy or study of mucsles. He may have started in Kung Fu but has evolved to a more complete fighting system.

Bruce was 160 pounds, which would put him(after cuts) with the FW or LW if he didn't cut much, and they are, I assure you, more than fast enough to put him on his back. He studied not just people but animals and how they would react and fight. he spent countless hours meditating and watching the movement of water. no hesitation strict training and sheer greatness this man was. But i know that he was a great martial artist(and some other things). But you can use mma for street fighting too. In it, they said that many martial arts movies actually speed up the film to make the fighters look or seem faster than they actually are. But with Bruce, they had to slow the film speed so that people watching the movie could actually see what he was doing. So you are probably right.

@mfuji02 Sorry, but no. The skills he had don't translate directly to MMA, just like MMA skills wouldn't translate directly to JKD talent. He would be good if he trained MMA, but if he just went into a fight, especially against a grappler, he would badly lose.
@mfuji02, I believe the same goes for any fighter who is a fantastic striker but also can go-to-ground if need be. In an anything-goes I know I would have no problem gouging out eyes, biting on necks, nuts, snapping fingers, tearing off ears, etc.
Though I tend to avoid fights like that :P (though I have regretably been in 5 fights just like that, including one attempted mugging this past summer when I was slashed in my side)

@Empyriumman Most fights in the real world involve multiple combatants, and in that case what works is size/strength/power, aggression and then technique. The last place you want to be is rolling around on the floor in some bar, while the other guy's mates are kicking your head in. Yes a lot of the flashy techniques of Kung Fu, especially the more traditional northern styles, is of dubious use to say the least, but there is a lot of useful stuff that does work.
@Empyriumman Oh and having worked security in asia for years, I never saw a single shred of evidence that taking the fight to the ground, is of any use in the real world in the crowded bars there where fights are almost never 1v1.

I totally accept that in the West, there are far more 1v1 fights and there is a certain sense of letting the 2 guys get on with it and sort it out between them, but in asia that ethic does not exist, and it can also be damn crowded, I genuinely almost never saw anyone voluntarily go to the ground but I did see a lot of striking.
@Primetime397 There are a lot of little guys there who will run up to the 100lbs-heavier westerner, do some rotary punches and look amazed when the target doesn't drop, and they think speed is everything, which is of course rubbish. But I can say that the WC I did (and I learned it from a successful full-contact fighter) was in fact immensely useful, and of course I also accept that the usual oppoent was not often an experienced fighter, but my point is that the environment matters.
@Empyriumman Bruce Lee taught style with no style and form with no form, to be like water. And as a fighter you should be. Muay Thai has it's pros and cons just like all other styles. I train at Martial Arts of Austin and we incorporate this philosophy in training. We learn to combat every art in all 4 zones of combat to be more like water than wood. @MariusWM: Actually, he didn't create his own form of martial arts until about 13 years after he first started training. He taught martial arts about 4 years after he began training. It was still pretty much wing chun or however you would prefer to spell it. About 13 years after he started training he created JKD. It is only considered a flop to those who do not understand it's purpose. Of course it did not gain as much recognition as it should have, because the creator died soon after..

Can say ive heard some incredible stories about bruce while they were growing up in gang riddled china. Also much love and respect to their sifu Grandmaster Ip Man. But i know that he was a great martial artist(and some other things). But you can use mma for street fighting too. MMA is not mainly about grapples and takedowns, its has some standing strikes and kicks. But its my opinion.

One of the reasons he was so insanely fast was that the man's physique was legendary! He invented the Dragon Flag ab exercise (look it up its insane) and could do elevated V sits for hours! Combine that with perfect economy of motion from his core art of Wing Chun and you are the fastest human alive!

In it, they said that many martial arts movies actually speed up the film to make the fighters look or seem faster than they actually are. But with Bruce, they had to slow the film speed so that people watching the movie could actually see what he was doing. So you are probably right.

@mfuji02, I believe the same goes for any fighter who is a fantastic striker but also can go-to-ground if need be. In an anything-goes I know I would have no problem gouging out eyes, biting on necks, nuts, snapping fingers, tearing off ears, etc.
Though I tend to avoid fights like that :P (though I have regretably been in 5 fights just like that, including one attempted mugging this past summer when I was slashed in my side)

The last place you want to be is rolling around on the floor in some bar, while the other guy's mates are kicking your head in. Yes a lot of the flashy techniques of Kung Fu, especially the more traditional northern styles, is of dubious use to say the least, but there is a lot of useful stuff that does work.

I totally accept that in the West, there are far more 1v1 fights and there is a certain sense of letting the 2 guys get on with it and sort it out between them, but in asia that ethic does not exist, and it can also be damn crowded, I genuinely almost never saw anyone voluntarily go to the ground but I did see a lot of striking.

But I can say that the WC I did (and I learned it from a successful full-contact fighter) was in fact immensely useful, and of course I also accept that the usual oppoent was not often an experienced fighter, but my point is that the environment matters.

I train at Martial Arts of Austin and we incorporate this philosophy in training. We learn to combat every art in all 4 zones of combat to be more like water than wood. @MariusWM: Actually, he didn't create his own form of martial arts until about 13 years after he first started training. He taught martial arts about 4 years after he began training. It was still pretty much wing chun or however you would prefer to spell it. About 13 years after he started training he created JKD. It is only considered a flop to those who do not understand it's purpose. Of course it did not gain as much recognition as it should have, because the creator died soon after..
