I wonder if people realize that with the internet, a lot of cinematic standards such as festivals and the cinemas themselves will become some what less standard as the years go on.
While I absolutely agree with the text at the bottom of the video, I do have to say that while it's not important that stuff is lit properly or that its shot on a big budget camera on a big budget set, but two things are utterly important. And that is enough light so you can see and sound that you can comprehend. I really really had trouble with the echo's in the hall which made some parts unintelligble for me :( Which is really sad, because I'm genuinly interested!
@Dougurasufilm Yeah, the scene was all adlibbed and sometimes the actors spoke in very low voices or spoke over each other, but most of the dialogue in the scene was irrelevant. The meanings are mostly communicated in the visuals. Given a higher budget and more time I'd have put the effort in technically. Having said that I don't think a film as experimental as this one would get funding - so a choice had to be made. Plus I only make films where I have final cut.
Not even watched this clip, just posting to say i've added to my 'watch later' so really posting just to show support from your fan base. Love your work Rob.
I liked the content itself, much more intriguing than your earlier clips which looked like hellraiser or standard zombie fare. The commentary does come across as defensive and or an apology. Paranormal activity had none of the qualities of a big budget picture yet still found distribution and an audience. If you want to do the same I'm not sure a lecture on the sorry state of the film industry will persuade distributors to pick you up. Good luck Rob the film looks good.
@broussardorama Thanks. The other clips are full of subliminals too, but more difficult to notice outside the context of the full film. The subs aren't an apology, I'm making the films I want to make/see and saying the things I want to say. Otherwise what's the point? "Safe" film making is good for one thing - short term profit. That's not my aim.
BTW Hellraiser is incredibly sophisticated. I did a 47min analysis of it.
@robag88 Yeah its too bad the production companies never got behind his other films I think Clive is a great director screwed over by the promotional people.(No one else could have made Nightbreed work other then maybe Joss) Also Hellraiser was made for almost no money.
Have to say, the more clips I see of this, the more excited I get. I really like the long take and the breaking the fourth wall. It looks like it could be one of the best horror movies in a long time.
Intriguing. Can't remember whether I've asked this before, or whether you answered, but was it a conscious creative decision to shoot in the classical 'Academy Ratio' rather than widescreen, or was it a budgetary constraint (or have I read too much into it and this aspect ratio is just for the YouTube trailer)? If the former, can you explain why? Thanks, looking forward to seeing this.
@PhoenixWright101 It was for both reasons. One of the ways I put the film together was to identify in advance all the budgetary constraints and then find lots of ways to use them thematically. Surveillance and the paranoia that goes with it is one of the film's many interlocked themes. So using cheaper cameras in a 4:3 ratio gives the whole thing a semi-CCTV ambiguity.
I got chills from that Kubrickian moment with the 4th wall, VERY interested to see how this turns out!
I'm currently studying at USC's graduate cinema school and if I could help in any way, I would. I've been scoring horror/thrillers lately and if you need any additional music, I'd be willing to help.
it's a bit pretentious to tell the audience about how original your film is. it's almost like you are apologizing for something. you should just leave the commentary out and let the trailer stand on its own, because the acting seems pretty good.
Question - why do I hear "action" at the beginning?
Of course, I could include theories on why there's a bunch of flags on the ground, something in the back that seems to say "krucified", a bizarre painting (looks like 2001? Maybe), and a squiggly "S" in the background... but I'll hold off on that, at least until I see the movie.
@fiscornioman Can you send me some links to your work. Best emailing me if you don't want your message to be missed. Email address is on my website :)
The whole time, I kept thinking about how all the greats have scenes without cuts; Hitchcock, Paul Thomas Anderson etc. But then I also thought, "Why doesn't he work the camera more?". Great way to challenge my perception. Can't wait for this.
hey rob, didn't you have a mulholland drive analysis up a little while ago? where'd that go? I've just seen the film and I'd be interested to see what your thoughts are.
also, I may have to purchase a copy of this movie, looks very interesting
@TaffyRaphie Mulholland Drive analysis is now only available on my new DVD set which I posted on my website yesterday. Sorry you missed it, but I can only make the sales if the DVDs have content not available online. Gotta make a living :)
British flag is kind of by itself over there.... is that saying British filmmaking is becoming obsolete? Like how Nolan and other British filmmakers come to America to make movies that appeal to larger audiences.
0:30 : is that guy talking standing on the French flag 'cause he's the rude dick? :p Not trying to be insulting, I'm French, but we know how you British feel about us :p, and the flags on the floor can't be random decoration.
"Movies you've already seen". So true. Almost every blockbuster nowadays is annoying & forgettable. Remember how that cool scene from the Bourne Identity made you feel? Well here's a 2011 hipster-y imitation of that. Copy and Paste your feelings here.
So far I really like what you've did and I can't wait for you to release it.My question is, when released, how will I be able to see it, apart from movie festivals(except if it comes to a film festival in Bucharest). Thanks :)
@ThePinkMadcap At the moment i'm not bothering with the festival circuit, having looked at it recently and found it's as bad as it was when i lost shot a fiction film about five years ago. Too many sharks accepting lots of submission fees and you have no guarantee if they even watched your film. I'm going for lots of online promotion and direct approaching of distributors.
@robag88 I thought that these people might represent different countries, tried to find some things these countries might have in common, fish & chips, petroleum, BMW .. watches? Might have to ditch that idea.. Already being in the comment window, I wrote what came to mind, being Norwegian...
@robag88 Just too bad the state is sucking up to the EU and basically doing everything they say, we are now forced to loan Greece more money. Waiting in excitement to watch your film, great work!
@iasedu What even Norway is getting sucked into that? BTW not sure if you've been following, but the Greek PM putting the bailout to the Greek people in a referendum could completely sabotage the whole bailout deal. I hope Greece does leave the EU. Once one goes others will follow.
@robag88 I don't like it when fewer and fewer people get power over more and more people, it seems to me like the EU is an attempt to make Europe into one unity. Europe could easily compare with the US and China on being a superpower, if it wasn't in 50 pieces. Do your film have political symbolism?
