  • I loved this song way back when. I had it on their album of the same name but it seems no one has ever heard of it. On that album the Dells blew away a medely "By the time I get to Phoenix/Witcita Lineman that naturally no one has ever heard of either. Any help out there.

  • Yes, that is the 'Great Phil Upchurch on Guitar,

The Arranger is: The Late Great, Charles Stepney

Marvin Junior,.... one of the greats.

  • Thank you for posting. Haven't heard this by The Dells in many years.

  • je frissone quel voix !!! la musique me fait vibrer !!! j'adore <3

  • I'm a big Procoal Harum fan and a Dells fan too, and they did a an excellent job of this song!

  • There's no need to say who has the best version of this song because the song is so beautiful that as long as it's properly sung no one should walk away dissapointed. The Dells are a true American Treasure and Marvin Junior has an exremely distinctive voice, as most did back in the day. I cannot say that for the singers of today...at least not as of yet.

  • I forgot all about this, once owned it on 45! Thanx for the post!

I wonder if thats Phil Upchurch on the guitar solo,he played many sessions at Chess.

  • Meh, give me the original by Procol Harum anyday. "They stealin' our music, man..." hehe.

  • @upyerrzzz Good humor ^^

  • i have never heard them do this. i love the dells so much! thanx soso much for posting!

  • the most pwerful version... blew the original away!! imo

  • wow

  • Marvin Junior didn't originally sing this...it was Procol Harum.

  • I have to say, I like the original better, but this is a very good interpretation :) Rock on Guys

  • @oceanbound222

This is based onJ.S Bachs - Air on the G string

You should listen to the above. It may help you overcome your embarrassing, moronic ideas.

  • This song touched so many people and spawned so many great covers of it, the original stands alone, but this version and the one by Glenn Hughes are amazing.

Marvin Junior could sing the Alphabet and it would be wonderful.

  • Even though I cant understand half the words Marvin Junior sings in the song, I feel them all! The Dells are the greatest! Their contribution to R&B and Soul music is monumental. They could sing "Mary had a little lamb" and make it sound good! Im 32 and will forever appreciate this group. My 6 year old daughter even knows the words and sings along to this one! Go figure!

  • @oceanbound222 Words can be written for any genre to bring the song to life with their interpretation. Country artists cover some of Babyfaces & Brian McKnights songs. No such thing as only one genre or the other.

  • @gorillabychoice help em understand!!!!

  • @lecoy44 I'm tryin'. No one saysa sunset/sunrise or a flowers beauty is meant for one group or anothers enjoyment - why should lyrics be any different? Alabamas' "Feels So Right" is just as relevent to me as Marvin Gayes "Distant Lover". Pigeonholing good lyrics is like tryin' to catch sunshine. Stop and enjoy for what it is.

  • Many covers of this song are god but the original version remains unbeatable.

  • I love the Dells!

  • Marvin Junior..one of those unsurpassed voices..

  • I wish he would've had the procol harum background music behind him. The back ground on this is sub-par.

  • ol school is the best

  • GREAT version. I love The Dells. Thanks for uploading.

  • Ahh man, i'm 59, when this came out I was young and so inlove..such sweet sweet memories..thanks for posting..i'm crying right about now..thank you..

  • WOW BEST VERSION BY FAR, Second is Annie Lennox to Me!

  • sorry dude - procul harum (sic) still the best version.........

  • @gorillabychoice Gary Brooker (lead singer of Procol Harum) has one of the best voices I've ever heard in my life....he is stunning, soulful, sensational. Saw him on the Johnny Carson show one night, unannounced ahead of time, and he sat at a piano and sang some soul song I never heard before,no band just him, and he blew me away. Absolutely stunning.

  • @calwaite - Bobby Caldwell struck me the same way, it takes absolutely nothin' away from Marvins soulful tubes - but Procols version is the best - Annie Lennox? Puuleeeeze........

  • @gorillabychoice I like Bobby Caldwell, but his voice is nowhere near as fabulous as Gary Brooker's. I have no idea why Brooker basically has disappeared from the business for the past 25 years. I mean, I'm a soul and R&B guy, and not too many white singers have ever hit me in my heart and soul, but Brooker certainly did...as did, of course, Marvin Junior. Annie Lennox is fluff, like the Beatles were fluff.

  • @calwaite I was referring to his style- not his chops, Brookers got the better delivery - by far........and there are so very few vocalists today that aren't fluff.

  • @onlyoneman23 Knocked-out bt this version! I've found a gold-mine.

  • A Maze Zing WoW

  • Thank you so much, O'h the memories in Detroit !

  • @darneitta Why do people have to compare versions? I really don`t care which version you like better. And since i am on this page, you can figure THIS is the version I want to hear. If you prefer another version other than this one .....get the heck off this page and go listen to the other one!!! Peace

  • WOW!!! I had no idea!

  • OH!!! Those vocals
