Sorry I disagree, "Ace Combat 5" and especially "Ace Combat Zero" are IMHO the best in the series, better story lines, best music...But everyone has a right to his or hers opinion.

AC4 was the 1st step for ACE Proyect to the PS2 .... but actually i like the all 3 because they are connected ... specially this game who had reference of manys names and things who appeared in other AC world history .... and also ... some "ACEs" in this game ... specially from the Ace Record are knowing for begin center as friend or foes in other AC games like: "Yellow 13" , "Garbarc", "Ofnir", "Huckbein the Raven" , and some others who you can leave speculations about them

I really enjoyed Zero, but it really was too short. One of the great things in Zero is the realistic voice distortion over the radio. As much as I truly did love AC5, there isn't a radio system known to man that has that kind of clarity. I didn't give it much thought until I played Zero, but that little detail alone went a long way. I still wish Zero was longer, and had more tie-ins with AC5. I do hope AC6 also has a large collection of enemy aces like Zero.

In -my- opinion, ace combat 5 played out more like a movie, what with 30+ missions, and the long cutscenes, and the storyline. It just seemed like a movie, not that is was a bad game, it's the first one I played and it got me hooked, and is my fav. But it still seems like a movie to me, which is awsome lol

Chronologically, the events you play would happen in order, yes. But AC04 has nothing to do with AC05 or AC Zero... it just sorta happened in between them.
