OMG! The opening shot shows my place of work in the background. It was a surprise when my jobs had us to relocate up there for 2 weeks in Feb 2000 to help rebuild the cable plant that was damamged from the ice storm.Needless to say that for those 2 weeks, I was 3 hours early for work even tho the suites were 15 minutes away. I caught the auto train both North and South. I wanted so desparately to railfann. @ least I did see the original elevated Richmond station.(didn knw what it was @ the time)
It's actually 3610 feet. The superliners are all 85 feet and the new AVC(Aluminum Vichael Carriers) autoracks are 90 feet long and have weight capacity when loaded of 160,000lbs.
That is a long ass train. There are a lot of 15 car passenger trains on the NEC, but none of them with the extra car carriers on the end, and even then most of them are amfleet/njt not superliner throughout.
I love the Auto Train. I rode down to Florida with my grandma during my spring break in April. The food is great, the sleeping cabin was comfortable, but the sightseer lounge was filled with cigarette smoke. Overall the trip was worth it
Question for you all. DO you think the Auto Train should be extended kind of like the orginal Auto Train, but to another area? I've been wondering about that for years and it's time know I ask everyone that question.
I personally would like to see Auto Train service from this Midwest to the South, also from the East to West Coast. Also would be nice to have an RV transporting service not unlike the "Tracks to Adventure" tours down in Mexico.
Having said all that, I know the old AutoTrain company tried a Louisville KY to Florida service and it ended up being a MAJOR flop.
I'm sure the costs of acquiring the equipment and facilities for additional service would be astronomical, to put it lightly.
I hear they are going to replace the old Auto Train terminal in Sanford with a new station in the same area. It states that it will connect with the CFCR(Central Florida Commuter Rail)
I am from the Netherlands and during my time in Europe untill 1988 (I worked for the Dutch railroad, it's in my blood) I don't remember seeng a longer one.
But I don't know about places like China / Australia and Africa?

What were those cars carrying at 0:50-1:30?.
KKkezo22 2 years ago
Automobiles from the passengers going from Virginia to Florida, and back. So they avoid Interstate I95.

Whoa 5 Diner Cars wow I never seen a train with 5 diners before
JAREDAMTRAK 3 years ago
There were only THREE diner cars on this train which is NORMAL for the Auto Train. There was an extra AT Lounge Car which is not typical, however.

I saw the Auto Train once; it had 16 Superliners and 24 auto carriers. I believe the Auto Train is the longest passenger train in the WORLD.

Why is the Auto Train so long? I mean that is like at least 3 or 4 Silver Meteors if not 5. How many people do they have on that train usually?
murjax 4 years ago
I will try to find an answer at work this week. (I work at CSX)
And btw, a AMTK engineer told me it is the longest AMTK train out here, just to prevent any misunderstandings. :)
epvanbeveren 4 years ago
At the maximum I hear it can have 650 passengers and 330 automobiles, but it could be a lot more than that.
kmothersil 4 years ago
have you ever seen one with 50 cars before?
kmothersil 4 years ago
No, at least not a passenger train. Of course 150+ cars freight, yes. :)
