Lots of reasons. We use the 3MV, 56kJ marx generator at my school to study the effectiveness of lightning protection in power systems, properties of dielectrics, effects of switching impulses. Without the research done with these devices, we would have very unreliable power systems. In addition, there is a host of other research topics that are being studied using this type of equipment.
