As Howard Thompson said: "The world's worst, and don't you miss it!" Absolutely hilarious send up of Jeanette Macdonald. From lovely kitsch to horrifying narcissism in a decade! A low camp classic, and why is she incessantly looking at her derriere?
What a scream. I think I'll have to watch it again!!!!
great video .... am so glad to have found it. We need more Rodgers & Hart stuff on YT! Durbin's voice is tremendous ... great control and right on to those notes ....
Wonderful song.....please can someone tell me if exsists anywhere the Alfred Hitchcock's rear window's instrumental version? is that a Franz Waxman arrangement only for that movie sequence or is it an official recorded version that i can take somewhere?
I love the progressions. Darbin's harmonizing at the beginning and the pizzicato strings are gorgeous. I can't find a word to describe them. Ecstatic? It's that elegant beauty you find in neoclassical music hidden behind form. It gives me goosebumps, besides the fact that it revels in its own banality. I can't help it either, though. It reminds me of similar unexpected harmonies in "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?" Can anyone recommend me some songs with similar harmonies?
The Angels will indeed have Deanna someday, but for now she is still alive and well, having just turned 87. She is retired, living just outside of Paris.
I'm playing this piece as a jazz trombone solo - except the main melody (in this video from begining to 1:15) is over in about 1 minute, then it's 3 minutes of pure impro =)
Now I know why women are always late for everything! .. :) worth the wait!

Modern music is worthless in comparison to stuff like this.

I totally agree. One has to respect how much blatant romantic influence is in the early part of the 20th century. It makes for some great stuff. :)

Your sense of beauty has been fatally damaged by exposure to contemporary kitsch. So sad,,,
