"'The Well-Tempered Clavier' was truly heavenly music for mathematicians. It was composed of prelude and fugue pairs in major and minor keys using all twelve notes of the scale, twenty-four pieces per book, forty-eight pieces in all, comprising a perfect cycle."
Glenn Gould and Bach.. two icons from such distant generations... All it takes to know the sublime beauty of that combination is... you here now. Perfection!
I love this guy. Such a unique player with such a great ability to bring out all the melodies. I especially love his renditions of the minor pieces. They give me chills like no other piano recording.
I have all this on vinyl somewhere. Time to dig it out and convert into digital with the turntable I just got. Although Gould was a character, he had amazing technique. I will never be able to pull/grab notes like that so quickly and accurately. It is funny to see people who really knock him for his interpretations.
Could you fucking assholes stop mentioning irrelevant teen pop stars on every youtube video, including a video for a fucking Bach composition? Why is everyone obsessed with hating or refuting these people? Why do honestly care enough to even mention them? Stop giving them free advertising. Stop obsessing over how many views they got over this. Let it go already. Let's just forget about that while we're listening to Bach, OK?
@jpastuch Wish I could favorite this 1000x, but YouTube comments are like the comments on my local newspapers web site. A bunch of monkeys fucking a football.
well said. though i think most of the people who do that don't mean to be offensive in any way. the scary thing is that people who actually listen to or follow some music cluster that they perceive as the whole there is in the world tend to be aggressive and try to transfer their own limitations to everyone else. like i am perceived as being rude and indecent and holding a pose if i don't know who singer x is.maybe i would love to learn but i will not feel guilty for not knowing.
There is such a fundamental difference between polyphonic counterpoint and monophonic narrative. Bach and Glenn are edifiers of natural architecture, exposing the awe inspiring vastness and pattern of emotional and mental space with their musical light. I must agree with his assessment of limited dramatic music as being less interesting.
That's because, unfortunately, a vast supermajority of people in the world are stupid, and therefore eschew anything remotely challenging, be it culturally, intellectually, or emotionally so.
Nothing wrong sir, just Like the pyramid , all great few people are on the top and the poor are on the bottom so then they never understand something above them
because most people on the world don't REALLY understand music and because they don't pratik him or interesting when they were young. Like an painting artist if you don't practice this art you can like other artist who pratik your work, but for others guys no. Don't worry about that listen for YOU it's always good
@Gogermann Nothing really matters to us. The very important thing is that people who listens to a legendary pianist like Glenn will love him and Bach for ever menawhile justtin bieber will last six months!
@Gogermann Yes that is so true, unfortunately a lot of people today prefer shit. But fortunately in 300 years from now Bach will still be played and not Justin Bieber. The strong will survive, and the shit will dry up and blow away.
Thank you so much. My vinyl albums are almost 40 years old. These pieces are my all time favourite music.
Every once in a while you can hear Glenn Gould unconsciously humming in the background. He drove recording engineers nuts, trying to determine the source of the drone they could here.

What I love is the simplicity and purity of Bach's (and Gould's) emotions; none of them are shallow, but they last forever :')

I'll tell you how the sun rose,
A ribbon at a time.
The steeples swam in amethyst,
The news like squirrels ran.
The hills untied their bonnets,
The bobolinks begun.
Then I said softly to myself,
"That must have been the sun!"
