Abortion, except in life threatening circumstances, is unacceptable in Islam. The consensus among the scholars is based on sound reasoning. The Ramadan mentions the "individual approach" but this is NOT a classical Islamic viewpoint which has always put the sanctity of life above other considerations. Abortion is only permitted when the life of the mother is threatened.
