In many of the scenes, the accents are so thick I can't hardly follow the conversation. I saw one of Loach's films after this one; it included subtitles for the many different accents with which the different characters (all from different parts of Britain) spoke. As an American, these accents are close to impenetrable. But then, I was in southern Virgnia years ago & couldn't understand a word they were saying there as well!
