When I was a kid I tried to get Carter to sign an old Expo card and he said he could not legally do so. It was strange. I got him to sign a ball. Carter is one of the more particular guys about autographs in my experience. Frank Robinson was probably the angriest, hah!
I'm a big fan of Gary Carter but in my opinion, I agree with msw600, it would make things easire if there were policies posted on the web & during the events. If anyone wanted to make donations to the Gary Carter Foundation, they can always go to that website. The way that Carter was confronted might not have been the best way to approach him, but honestly if I were a former major league ball player that helped win a world series champtionship & was inducted into the hall of fame I'd sign away.
Due, autograph collecting has been aroud forever, and people kids and adults do it because it is fun, It was something me and my father did together to grow closer and I intend to pass it on to my children. What he was NOT doing was signing photographs and this has become more common since people are claiming the photos are for their kids and they wind up for sale on Ebay or sports memorabilia sites.

What you have here is a simple issue of miscommunication between MLB and Carter or his agent. Gary Carter has had a long-standing policy of signing at events only if a donation is made to his charity - which helps underpriviledged kids get reading materials for their schools. THERE ARE LEGAL REASONS OR AGENTS WHO INSTRUCT THE BALLPLAYERS WHAT TO DO ETC. IF THE RULES AT THIS EVENT WERE THAT ALL PAYING ATTENDEES ARE ALLOWED
If you want an autographed photo make a donation to his charity. Don't YOU want to do something to help kids? The Gary Carter Foundation pays for school lunches in impoverished schools and advocates a reading literacy program. You were getting 2 sigs, one on paper for framing with a photo AND a signed baseball card for FREE! Many times an autograph dealer sends a kid up to get an auto for free, & resells it. Players have a right to set policies. You were a total jerk.

I was at a New York Islanders game a year ago and Gary was there for the Islanders Business Club. I was allowed in the event and Gary signed tons of autographs, including 8 for me, but he would sign a baseball with the inscription "LI DUCKS". He signed my cards fine except he signed half of them on the back half of them covering his face. the one thing he did sign perfectly was a 1986 World Series baseball, but it already had 4 autographs on it. i was in total shock he didint ask for $

This is typical Carter. Last season when he managed the Long Island Ducks a guy paid 75 dollars for him to sign 3 baseballs with the money going to his "foundation". The man asked for a for a receipt because after all it was for charity. Carter basically told the guy to go to hell.

When I was a kid I tried to get Carter to sign an old Expo card and he said he could not legally do so. It was strange. I got him to sign a ball. Carter is one of the more particular guys about autographs in my experience. Frank Robinson was probably the angriest, hah!

I'm a big fan of Gary Carter but in my opinion, I agree with msw600, it would make things easire if there were policies posted on the web & during the events. If anyone wanted to make donations to the Gary Carter Foundation, they can always go to that website. The way that Carter was confronted might not have been the best way to approach him, but honestly if I were a former major league ball player that helped win a world series champtionship & was inducted into the hall of fame I'd sign away.

Due, autograph collecting has been aroud forever, and people kids and adults do it because it is fun, It was something me and my father did together to grow closer and I intend to pass it on to my children. Nobody is right here, your both wrong...theres no reason for you to be mad at someone who is spending thiere time signing but Gary needs to understand some people have preferences of what to get signed....The best thing would be is if he just personalized the item unless he got a donation....

What you have here is a simple issue of miscommunication between MLB and Carter or his agent. Gary Carter has had a long-standing policy of signing at events only if a donation is made to his charity - which helps underpriviledged kids get reading materials for their schools. Unfortunately, MLB did not make this known to fans.

If you want an autographed photo make a donation to his charity. Don't YOU want to do something to help kids? The Gary Carter Foundation pays for school lunches in impoverished schools and advocates a reading literacy program. You were getting 2 sigs, one on paper for framing with a photo AND a signed baseball card for FREE! Many times an autograph dealer sends a kid up to get an auto for free, & resells it. Players have a right to set policies. You were a total jerk.

I was at a New York Islanders game a year ago and Gary was there for the Islanders Business Club. I was allowed in the event and Gary signed tons of autographs, including 8 for me, but he would sign a baseball with the inscription "LI DUCKS". He signed my cards fine except he signed half of them on the back half of them covering his face. the one thing he did sign perfectly was a 1986 World Series baseball, but it already had 4 autographs on it. i was in total shock he didint ask for $

Sure some stuff obtained at Fanfest makes there way to Ebay so what the ones who buy these memobilia are TRUE fans and collectors and in many ways appreciate the value of YOUR professional hard work and career as a Pro. This was until MLB found out that Gary was charging to sign at the FREE AUTOGRAPH FANFEST! Not only did they stop him from charging, but they docked his appearance fee by the amount that he had collected from fans. Gary you should be ashamed. They don't hold any significant value but they are nice memorabilia and who the hell wants a small signature on a giant white piece of paper. It would seem that these days the sport figures we admire so much are just a bunch of PAB's ( punk a-- bitc--- ) In my home town, the Chicago Black Hawks won the Stanley Cup. 3 players came to this sports bar signing shirts, pics, whatever. Cost $50.00 to enter the bar. The owner charged this amount because he needed to recoup the monies he was paying each player for showing up...$10,000. ea for 2 hrs work. WORK? 1) Give me a break, the Kids are NOT fans of Gary Carter, to be 18 or under you've got to be born after 1992. Gary last played in 1992. So there's no way the kids actually saw him play.
2) He was signing things. Just not memorabilia, but you wanted the memorabilia, which is a dead sign that you wanted something with resale value.
3) People do profit off selling sports memorabilia the item you reference for example sells @ $7.95 most baseball cards have a resale value of 2¢ that's up 397x

You're so full of shit. You admit that your kids aren't fans of Carter, so why wouldn't they be happy with an autograph on a white piece of paper?... oh yeah, because it's NOT WORTH AS MUCH ON EBAY! It's so obvious. You already have the foil sticker on the picture ready to sell. And the video is meant to be proof that it's a real autograph. It's folks like you who make it tough for kids to get autographs from their favorite players.

"Im sorry, if i take this one pic, everyone else would want it too" the fans get it after. What I really like the most is how Gary Carter seems to live in his OWN DREAM WORLD! He refuses to sign anything but a white pice of paper for free because he doesn't want people "profiting" from his crap! IS THAT A JOKE??? Look up his autographs on ebay...NO ONE WILL RETIRE OR EVEN GET A SUPER SIZED MEAL off one of his precious autographs! Check out ebay item # 120492571950 SELLING FOR A WHOPPING $7.95!!!! HAHAHA! Heres a crazy idea. How about since youre so damn "charitable" you just donate the $20,000 they give you to show up to this event for THREE WHOLE DAYS (2 hours per day mind you...its not a 9-5) and donate your own fu@king money instead of squeezing the fans for an extra $25!!!! Video is 100% Right on! I was there and Gary "The Jerk" Carter left everyone waiting in line for 2 hours BEFORE he decided to make the announcement that he wouldn't sign anything except a stupid white piece of paper! And this WASN'T A FREE signing. Everyone paid $30 to get in & the reason we paid was to get a chance to meet players and get autographs. These kids may not be old enough to remember Gary Carter BEGGING his way into the hall of fame and should feel blessed hes now in obscurity!

It's not the point if they're fans or not...They're fans of the sport. And when every other player is graciously signing, theres not a real explanation as to why one of them thinks he's above signing the picture they just paid for...unless they drop another $25!

1. you were going to sell it on ebay, I know this because of #2
2. who brings a video camera to an autograph signing, you were baiting him, and knew that this would happen "all your fans are gonna see this on youtube'
3. gary said it himself, 'you're getting your way'. you should have interpreted this as him telling you you're being childish and that you should move along

2. It was fanfest NOT just an autograph signing...hence the camera. And baiting? No. Upset that he left everyone in line for over an hour before he said he wouldn't sign? YES! Upset and ready to record because people giving $25 extra did get signed? Absolutely! Wonder if they got a receipt for their "donation" 2 charity??

This video was a setup.
#1 The video guy was using the kids, how funny that both of them have the same photo.
#2Gary and the MLB are wrong, they should not have signing restrictions on items. Fans pay money to go to the games, food, fan fest, etc and they have signing restrictions.
#3 This video is an embarrasment for fans that like to collect autographs, this is an example of why players decline to sign a simple autograph.
Bad taste in recording this type of video.

Nobody gives a shit about Gary Carter. If someone gave me his autograph i would flush it down the toilet which was pretty much where his insignificant career went. The Mets and Expos are 2 of the worst franchises ever, so who really care about this wash up's signature anyways. Cant even sign a picture for a kid who probably has no clue who he is, haha, what a joke. Also the security in this vid need to fuckin relax.
