That beast looks similar to the Sica sword, used by some of the Roman gladiators, whose most crippling attack was effectively slicing up the opponents back, but doing so from infront and reaching over the shoulder. Nasty, nasty. With regards your last quote, the gladiator himself may have said 'te velim eviscerare, filie.'
This knife was designed for the police as they were working undercover and could not carry firearms, but could get away with a knife. As a result Spyderco came out with this, the Civilian. So yes the review is correct the knife is not designed as other knives are, it IS meant for only one purpose.
the concept of the ultimate slasher is cool, but the inability to stab (easily and effectively) just seems like a weird feature in a defensive blade. Its touted as an ideal emergency weapon for people with no knife fighting training, but it seems to me that unless you train specifically for this knife, it would be all too easy to forget this limitation and make a ineffective thrust in a scenario where every second counts. Also, no jimping?
Im not hating on the knife or your review, im actually somewhat of a regular on yur page, but really, ive heard some negative things about this knife serrations get caught or hung up on the target, they also chip off easily, and a few of my military/law enforcement friends say they have no idea why someone would choose this knife, seeing as how 90% of them use other blades that have a better price point and more than 1 use as a saw, im a spiderco fan but definitely wont be buying this one
hey JT aquired a civilian yesterday funny the saleman photo copied my DOD ID then said he was informing PD that i had made the purch lol had less hassle buying auto infidel lol what sthe world coming too
some got it coming. some people complain about the tip. who gives a crap if it breaks off in some dude. you still got the rest of the blade for slicing.
I dont think I would buy a knife that was purely for self defense because if I was about to get in a knife fight, i'd just run. I do like spyderco's knives though
@HELLZZARMY hey dont be self hating, alot of humans have an aggressive nature and violent tendencies, ITS NORMAL,i dont even think peace is an option for people like us, just simply peace of mind, in knowing that your up here ^ and they are down here v =)
A friend of mine has one and said he always thought you could "flick" it. He said basically, you'd hold it in the normal sense, and flick you wrist toward the target offender. The tip could cause minimal damage, getting the "don't fuck with me" point across, if that doesn't work, let those serrations go to town.
@HELLZZARMY ... Yes, I just remembered that Apocalypse Now is from 79 or something, so it`s pretty realistic i think.. It`s before Spyderco was around so I think I have seen wrong...
Yes, thats true! The Cold steel safe keeper was a bit wrong..
@evagslid not sure about Apocalypse Now, but this was the knife Hannibal Lecter uses in the books, and even can see him holding it in the second movie after he throat slashes a guy in the church
hey man. love your videos. Right now all i have is hunting rifles but i'm looking forward to buying my first handgun. I'm gonna go with a concealable but I don't know which to get. Also wanted to take a look at combat shotguns. Mostly I'm just interested in learning about all this stuff. Where did you get your knowledge from that I might have access to?
p.s. You poly? You remind me of a lot of my tongan, samoan, and hawaiian football coaches.
Hey JT, how do you think this knife compares to the Cold Steel Black Talon? I just ordered the BT, thinking the blade is a bit more heavy duty then the Spydey (San Mai III, Titanium bolsters and liner, Micarta... Can't wait to get it!
nice!! now you have two of them, i have some nice knifes the ka bar TDI is one of them but the civilain knife is what i need next now that is a bad knife! great video!!
@HELLZZARMY yep the harpy was in the movie, but in the book, he bought 3 spydercos, including the harpy and the civilian, man i can't wait to get those two!!!
Oh my god i cant believe it, the Black Talon is my favourite Coldsteel folding knife and as soon as i get the money im going to buy it lol, i may even do a video review here on youtube.
Although this particular knife takes the frikkin' cake, just about every other hawkbill style knife out there does a pretty decent job at tearing flesh, especially when they're serrated. Karambit knives are good. Some of those cheap ass $1 hawkbill knives on eBay are okay, too.
I also own this knife and would trust my life to it, but another knife I would recommend (for those who can't quite afford the Civilian's $100+ price tag) is Smith & Wesson's Extreme Ops Hawkbill. Good size and reach.
This review sucks!

Lecter used a Spyderco Harpy. It's a bit smaller and doesn't have that recurve on the blade.
