This knife was designed for the police as they were working undercover and could not carry firearms, but could get away with a knife. As a result Spyderco came out with this, the Civilian. So yes the review is correct the knife is not designed as other knives are, it IS meant for only one purpose.

the concept of the ultimate slasher is cool, but the inability to stab (easily and effectively) just seems like a weird feature in a defensive blade. Its touted as an ideal emergency weapon for people with no knife fighting training, but it seems to me that unless you train specifically for this knife, it would be all too easy to forget this limitation and make a ineffective thrust in a scenario where every second counts. Also, no jimping?

Im not hating on the knife or your review, im actually somewhat of a regular on yur page, but really, ive heard some negative things about this knife serrations get caught or hung up on the target, they also chip off easily, and a few of my military/law enforcement friends say they have no idea why someone would choose this knife, seeing as how 90% of them use other blades that have a better price point and more than 1 use as a saw, im a spiderco fan but definitely wont be buying this one

A friend of mine has one and said he always thought you could "flick" it. He said basically, you'd hold it in the normal sense, and flick you wrist toward the target offender. The tip could cause minimal damage, getting the "don't fuck with me" point across, if that doesn't work, let those serrations go to town.

These Spyderco Civilians are real Eviscerating Slashers though!

Any knife is dangerous in it's own right, lethal in the right/wrong hands, and a matter of personal preference...

Although this particular knife takes the frikkin' cake, just about every other hawkbill style knife out there does a pretty decent job at tearing flesh, especially when they're serrated. Karambit knives are good. Some of those cheap ass $1 hawkbill knives on eBay are okay, too.

I also own this knife and would trust my life to it, but another knife I would recommend (for those who can't quite afford the Civilian's $100+ price tag) is Smith & Wesson's Extreme Ops Hawkbill. Good size and reach.
