would love to have :23 explained- bright flash and then smoke trail lingering, breaking up slowly... I saw one of these once during the perseids- the flash was very bright, it was directly above me (i was watching lying down)... it almost seemed that one had made it far into the atmosphere before burning up? the smoke trail hung very long and seemed to be breaking up from wind, it was not like the 'trail' you see on some meteors. the flash and then trail on this vid are strikingly similar...

its august 13 at 2.30 2010,and we just wittnessed the persied meteor shower from the comet swift-tuttle..i seen about 6 in half an hour,,but i would love to wittness the leonid shower as i understandyou can see thousands per hour at its peak ..is this true???does anyone know how often the leonid shower comes around i thought it was evry 33 years,is this true???beautiful
@reksub10 Leonid are every year as well, usually about mid-November. Occasionally, the Leonid Shower produces thousands of meteors per hour in a meteor storm, and this happens every 33 years, and it's a good 20 or so years before it happens again. Usually it's around 15-20 meteors an hour though.
@MKelly1919 so the big leonid storm is every 33 years but it can be seen every year.cheers what cause the big storm every 33 years???is it comet debris from temple tuttle .as the persied strom is yearly as the earth passes through the debris of comet swift tuttle but that comet has a perihelion of 130-135 years, any ifo is appreciated thanks
@reksub10 Essentially, as debris is blown off Tempel-Tuttle, it begins to spread out. However, every 33 years the Earth's orbit and that of Tempel-Tuttle intersect, and we get new debris that has not had time to spread out. Therefore it is very dense, and produces a meteor storm. To the best of my knowledge, that's why.
@MKelly1919 thanks very much for the info ,,,did you see any perseid meteors on the 13th aug this year??? i seen loads from the west coast of scotland
@reksub10 I saw loads. Drove to just outside Sheffield in Derbyshire, got some brilliant views. I bet the west coast was epic, I've been meaning to travel up to Galloway Forest Park, I've heard the skies are darkest in the UK. I'm a bit annoyed that my camera didn't catch any though, got some wonderful photos of stars and, annoyingly, planes, but no meteors. You have any better luck?
@MKelly1919 no i didnt get any luck with photographng any im an amatuer skygazer.and i learned a bit about the leonid shower's but in scotland its a bit cold in november to be standing out in the night, but then i found out about the persied showerand i was overjoyed that it was the summer ,and the skies where so clear it was beautiful.some one commented that with all the movies and books in the world, the universe puts on a show that beats them all hands down.illneed to get a camera cos i love it
@reksub10 I'm the same, this was the first time I'd been out with the sole intention of star-gazing. I used my Dad's camera, tried to get it on a few minutes worth of exposure, but it just wouldn't work. I would have to agree with you on that, I'm currently doing a College project on the Aurora, and it's easily just the greatest thing to behold.
Nasa took the Shot, from Space, from the Space Center, pointing a little off to the Side of the Earth, were the Belt of the Shower was. Hope that helped you out.
so i am assuming the video is a sped up version of the entire night. where was it shot? The entire US was cloudy with the exception of some western states. you have some clouds in yours.

Did you point it East, North or at a constellation?
Or did you just aim it where you saw the most meteors?
