Just another tip if this is not working for you training ninja's out there. Ensure u have "software monitoring" ON if u want to hear the vocoder whilst playing the keyboard and singing. You can turn this on by going to Preferences > Audio > Devices and tick "Software Monitoring". U can also customize the transport bar 2 have a button to turn it on and off. Right click the transport bar and choose Customize Transport Bar and under modes and functions tick Software monitoring to get the icon.
Wow, that was awesome. So, that's how Imogen Heap did it for that Hide and Seek song :D So, one has to play notes for the vocoder to kick in on the vocal? I'll keep watching.. Thanks.
Excuse but in this particular demo I can't really hear what you are doing. You mean that loop is making the vocoded voice duck? But it is very hard to hear so I don't really know what you did. Was the idea to make the voice pulsate to the kickdrum like in the previous video because it doesn't.
I will try it out myself though, and thanks for all tutorials, they are of great help. I just got logic and WOW, I don't even know why I waited so long and struggled with other DAW's.
sidechaining does not simply mean making a signal pulsate to a kick, this is just a very popular method, used typically in dance genre's. What he's doing here is, instead of using the kick as a trigger for a compressor side chain, he's using his voice as a trigger for a vocoder sidechain, so when he speaks, the track his voice is recorded on is fed to a processor (vocoder) and modulated accordingly. Pretty simple really. The buss is set to pre so the signal is taken before the volume fader.
Amazing video like all your other tuts, but in this one I don't understand the third example of sidechaining , the one with exs24..please ninja...ciao....
Thanx so much for these videos..one question are busses and auxilaries the same thing? If not then what's the difference? This has really got me confused.. thanx again for the videos
In real life, a bus is a cable, so when you send shit on it, your signal travels to where it's connected to(preferably an aux), so it's the path for your signal travels on. An aux is a channel that is separate from the mix, but works alongside it if you get me.
i have the same problem as PicnicKibun had 4 months ago..:
I can get the vocoder to work but it's very soft and it doesn't "kill" the mic sound completely so you can always hear the original voice in the background which is annoying.
ninja, please help!
my voice: always there. no chance to mute it by turning down the volume. always there, always loud. vocoder: always too low.
@brusexuelles Hi, I had the same issue, and although what ninja said fixed the loud voice, it doesnt seem to help the problem that the vocoder is extremely quiet :( i have to crank it up to maximum volume and turn up my speakers just to hear it...could you work it out in the end?

hi dave, i have tried several time with the same setup but nothing happen if i hold the keyboard / noted and talking into my mic :I help and many thanks . cheers from hong kong.
1. I can get the vocoder to work but it's very soft and it doesn't "kill" the mic sound completely so you can always hear the original voice in the background which is annoying. Any tips?
2. How would you set this up for a live scenario for Mainstage?
Do you have your bus track send for the vocoder turned up on the channel strip of your vocals?
I was having a similar problem and then I noticed that I hadn't turned up the signal from the vocal channel strip to the bus. I just had to drag the little green wheel and turn up the send.
Like philly2dabay, I have gone through this several times and I get nothing...just my normal voice. I am holding down with the computer midi keyboard up, I have it sidechained properly....volume is up on both tracks. I'm hearing nothing when I play the vocoder alone, which is how it's supposed to be. But when I play the midi keyboard and talk, I just get my normal voice. I'm a bit at a loss. Anyone?
Okay so I'm gonna look like an ass now. I turned up the volume on the vocoder track and i finally heard it. By the way, keep up the great work SF NInja. Your videos are really helpful.
i've watched this video about 10 times, followed every direction, and the vocoder is still not working for me. I hold down the keys and speak into my mic....but i hear no effect. ????? im confused
I think you should use your exact setup again, but Choose a preset for vocoding from the list. There are a coupl eof other things you might do.... check that at the right side of the vocoder it doesn't say 'SYN', but 'VOC'
You've received countless thank you comments and messages, but I have to send one as well. Thank you so much for creatively explaining these things in a logical manner. I am a guitarist/singer/songwriter with a modest home studio, and after watching your videos, I am very glad that I chose Logic Studio over other popular DAW's.
Thanks so much for the fantastic information, you are incredibely inspiring.
So really you could have set the output to bus1 of the track that you recorded your voice on, but because we were listening to your commentary you used the bus 1 as a send...
Just trying to get it all into my head, the different ways of sending signals. Food for thought!!
I like traffic lights, although my name's not 'Bamber.' lol! Interesting stuff. I am just learning Logic. It is a fascinating program, and your tutorials are very helpful.

When you create the bus, it automatically creates an aux that the bus is assigned to.
Go to the aux, and turn it's output to 'no output'
You were hearing the vocoder and the aux at the same time.

I am in the same boat as philly2dabay before he turned up the track volume, except mine is all the way up...
Any thoughts?
I'm using the capslock midi keyboard and internal mic, but that shouldn't make a difference (just playing...was having trouble with my interface).
Anythoughts? I've successfully used sidechaining before and the setup is pretty straight forward....at a loss.
