It is unsafe to cut or lash a whole into the airbag because the chemicals used burn up to 2500 degrees. So when you rip that open and the bag deploys you have the risk of significant burns. I would recommend taking a recently deployed airbag and touch the metal plate behind to see how hot it really gets.
I wonder if it would be of any benefit to puncture the airbag and cut across it with a knife to minimize it's ability to explosively expand and cause such an injury. Most of the covers are just a flexible vinyl, so it ought to be possible with a normal razor knife. I just wonder if this would trigger it's deployment. Anybody know for sure?
if airbags are unable to be deployed when the battery is disconnected then that's a big design flaw. airbags are made to deploy in crashes and in crashed the battery may be disconnected by the crash before the airbag sensors can tell it to deploy. or if the crash happens because the battery got disconnected or faulty while driving along.
the battery would never make a difference with airbags. airbags have been know to go off days after the accident in junkyards. those capacitors really do thier job
well it was the fault of the firefighters we are trained to disconnect the battery however the steeringwheel cover would not help on this one it was a passenger side airbag capacitors or not better to disconect the battery and position right but we gotta take risks too
is that really what they teach you guys? Even with the battery disconnected, if you cross the yellow wire or create any sort of static to it the airbag can deploy. I believe on some cars this is even after the battery has been disconnected for any period of time. any current applied to that wire or harness can result in deployment.
Auto. tech. experience ...i hated working on airbags or wiring near them. made me nervous as heck
Yes they can go off at any time Auto tech experience here too but it is so unlikely it is not a PRIMARY risk . I have messed with LOTS of air bags and ben on a multitude of wrecks and never had an accidental deployment of an airbag. So yes sir that is what they teach us.

Always disconect the battery!!!!

It may not matter. Sometimes those systems store energy in capacitors, which would make disconnecting the battery useless. Positioning is important.
