He's cool in this interview, great sense of humour. I think he changed so much though. As soon as he grew a beard in the 70's I really find it hard to see it's the same man as in the Monkees. His face filled out and it made him look so different. A lot of musicians/comedians (Robert Plant, Pete Townshend, The Pythons) from this era still look the same without surgery - just older versions but Mike changed a lot - if you see that interview from the BMI Awards last year I just can't see it's him.
The old news story of not being a band makes me think of how Knott's Berry Farm wasn't always an amusement park: It became one later, but it started as a sideyard to a farm where Mrs. Knotts was selling food... then over various spans more "amusement park" stuff showed up... (or rather they fenced it in because too many people were carrying on with "naughty" activities by going through for free.)
@eydie57 He would be a millionaire without counting the Liquid Paper inheritance. That was just icing. And if Betty hadn't sold it she probably would have made MUCH more ;)
Strange how Nez downplays the fact he IS a musician first actor second here. They fought to get creative control of the music back in the day and wanted to be taken seriously. So this baffles me.
@chilibro Ok, wow, my brain obviously dazed off there for a minute and i didn't catch that part :)
Quite honestly, that's crazy that the press would say that. The Monkees were very real, and an incredible band. And the tv shows are awsome too, i own them all on DVD :D
Nez needs to come back and make an appearance somewhere (Letterman, etc.) so that we can enjoy his music again! Too many young people are unaware of his work.
i knew it, Micky was his favorite i guessed whilst watchin them all on the 2 box sets i hav season 1&2 it was always Micky and Mik, Peter and Davy. im 14 and i watch them all the time and it drives my pearents crazy
Mike is one of the most underrated songwriter/musicians!! He deserves MUCH more respect and acknowlegement than what the music industry has given him! :-(
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Its a great interview. Why do people think that he doesn't want to talk about the Monkees! I know this was before the 1996 reunion but wow! I loved it.
Thanks from me too! This is one of the best interviews with Nez that I've ever seen or heard, and I had not seen it before. He seemed to be enjoying himself and to be glad to be there. What fun!
What a great interview! I love the fact that he just flat out said Micky was his favourite Monkee even though you get that impression anyway. It's funny to hear him talk about it really although at this time I guess he was thinking about getting back with them in a couple of years. Thanks for posting!
Talkin' about UFO on cable access. Hahaha. Greg Kinnear and Michael Nesmith are two most natural and easy going guys. Pretty cool.

It was one of the biggest pleasures of my life to FINALLY see Papa Nez perform live last month. You are so loved, Mr. Nesmith.

Nesmith is king... But his humour is wasted on Greg Kinnear...

Greg needed to learn how to shut up after asking a question so his guest could be given a chance to ANSWER!
Too many talk show hosts still do that to their guests.

Greg's 15 minutes are up anyway. This talk show was his 2nd minute. lol
