What matters is not how the americans helped but how effectively the mujahideen fought against a major force. RPG's and AK47s brought down the red army because the mujahideen were fearless fighters. This is an unwinnable war for usa. So the only solution to have a peaceful afghanistan is to have taliban involved in the governance of the country under the framework of an afghan constitution.
But the real danger is that once the ISAF leaves there would be none to stop the taliban from overrunning the government and establishing its own gov, thus going back to the 90s and rendering a decade of work useless.
