if you want to hear a musician who put every milligram of his soul into his playing Kaoru Abe is the one. high as a kite on Heroin during his peak years and dead at 29 makes it all the more tragic.
his playing almost brings a tear to my eye. the range of dynamics he uses, his phrasing, and ability to manipulate the saxaphone are amazing. my improvisations have benefited from the inspiration i get out of abes recordings. RIP
His music sends chills up my back. And that's a good thing. Not many artists can do this. It's a shame; All there is now is lazy music. I mean, musicians used to actually care about their work. They'd painstakingly pummel ideas into an instrument, and you'd appreciate it. RIP, Kaoru..

I think Abe's improvising here on the standard "Autumn Leaves." This was late in his career, about a year before his death. Recordings from a few years earlier reveal him as an assaultive player: fast, blitzing nonstop splinters of sound. Abe turned the alto into a weapon.
Nothing to say .... amazing.... !

@kingofkashiwa i think kaoru wanted us to find our own souls through his music, rather than his.
