Where did you get that number? I find it hard to believe that we more than double each year. If I recall, between 1990 and 2008, atheism only grew from 8% to 15%. Thats almost two decades, and it did not double in that time.

One thing I find most interesting is that when they try to prove their side through research or argument, it's more like they're just going through the motions. At no point in this 'scholarly' process is their mind open. It's almost as if they're cycling through different ways of saying the same thing, convinced that eventually one style of presentation will stick.
Perhaps the best way to deconvert someone is to start by pointing out that behavioral anomaly.
The other anomaly I have noticed is that a believer only needs a single reason to believe. Even if everything else in their faith has been proven wrong, and they've actually accepted the evidence against it to be legitimate, that one last 'reason' is still enough justification for them to believe.
This leads me to wonder if they have some sort of inability to grasp things as a whole. Maybe they look piece by piece, and forget everything about the last when they pick the next.
Yes, that's an extremely good observation. It's perplexing that anyone, given the obvious advancements achieved by Science and Technology, could still cling to such infantile dogma as theology or religion. In response to your wonderment, there are numerous studies that show a correlation between increased religiosity and lower intelligence, we find the findings very obvious and even elementary. From an outsider perspective (I'm not from the US), it's nice to see that the US has rational people like Maher. Excuse me if this sounds rude, but: it seems that a large part of the US "missed" the Enlightenment, and the rise of critical reasoning, at least when it comes to critisizing religious dogma. Where did you get that number? I find it hard to believe that we more than double each year. If I recall, between 1990 and 2008, atheism only grew from 8% to 15%. Thats almost two decades, and it did not double in that time.

But it's not an inability, just a bad habit of not appreciating context. One could be 1. Spinning renches 2. Fixing a car or 3. Making it possible to drive to work and support your family. One thing I find most interesting is that when they try to prove their side through research or argument, it's more like they're just going through the motions. At no point in this 'scholarly' process is their mind open. It's almost as if they're cycling through different ways of saying the same thing, convinced that eventually one style of presentation will stick.
Perhaps the best way to deconvert someone is to start by pointing out that behavioral anomaly.

The other anomaly I have noticed is that a believer only needs a single reason to believe. Even if everything else in their faith has been proven wrong, and they've actually accepted the evidence against it to be legitimate, that one last 'reason' is still enough justification for them to believe.
This leads me to wonder if they have some sort of inability to grasp things as a whole. Maybe they look piece by piece, and forget everything about the last when they pick the next.

Yes, that's an extremely good observation. It's perplexing that anyone, given the obvious advancements achieved by Science and Technology, could still cling to such infantile dogma as theology or religion. In response to your wonderment, there are numerous studies that show a correlation between increased religiosity and lower intelligence, we find the findings very obvious and even elementary. Organized religions are silly at best, but, dangerous at worst. Be Well!

From an outsider perspective (I'm not from the US), it's nice to see that the US has rational people like Maher. Excuse me if this sounds rude, but: it seems that a large part of the US "missed" the Enlightenment, and the rise of critical reasoning, at least when it comes to critisizing religious dogma. I'm hoping I'll see the day of an agnostic (or maybe even atheist) President of the USA. Maybe it will take some time, but it is definitely needed.

We've had Presidents that believe in God since Andrew Jackson, yet since that time we've dropped two bombs on Japan, expanded our empire through imperialism, assassinated leaders, over thrown govt's and enslaved 10s of millions .
