does anyone know what the deal is with this movie? i watched it online but i cant find it anywhere. no video stores, no store in general. its like it just vanished. no one has heard of it. i cant even find it online to buy. maybe i'm just looking in the wrong place. i dont know.
moie was sooo shit boring as the only remotely interesting shit was when the truck carrying waste crashed and even then nothing happened despite a man standing in the shit and nothing happened to him....BIGGEST FAIL EVER , john doyle dont quit your day job
No idea why they chose Durham to misrepresent, but I do love Colin Firth and Patricia Clarkson. Headed out to see this tonight and to see of Colin's accent is as bad as it looks here. People have a harder time imitating a southern dialect than a British one, IMO. I live in Raleigh and grew up in NC and while my dialect is easily reconized, I sound nothing like that.
As someone who is very familiar with Durham, North Carolina, I found the film's portrayal of Durham as a small, one-horse down dependent on the tobacco industry hilarious. Durham's major employers are Research Triangle Park and Duke University, and its downtown has added hundreds of new upscale condos, a beautiful performing arts center, an imposing new judicial center and thousands of square feet of office and dining in the former American Tobacco factory. And this in a shit national economy.

Um....you guys to realize that this is a MOVIE right? It isnt' supposed to be an accurate depiction of the small town they may be portraying. It is a movie. A fictional story, so can you please stop commenting about how the accents are wrong and how it isn't a small town?? Thanks.
I grew up in Durham and have lived in the Raleigh-Durham area most of my life....let me so for the record that the accents are exaggerated.... otherwise I shouldn't be able to hear them....they should sound "normal" to me.... imo the accents in this movie are more deep south (Alabama/Mississippi/Georgia)
I assure you that of the half of the cast of Main Street who are local actors living in the region around Durham the accents are our own. We got along very well with the foreign "imports", Orlando Bloom was observed to go shopping the local Whole Foods, and Colin Firth took his family to the DBAP to watch the Durham Bulls. They fit into the real Durham better than they did the fictitious one!
Holy Crap you people don't know crap about the NC accent... they sound like they are from Georgia not NC. You also don't know anything about Durham It is NOT a small town at all.
A film in Texas ? I'm not sitting down to watch a film full of "we don't like your kind around here", "we don't take it kindly when …" and "herp de derp derp". no thank you
@magicglitter As far as looks go, he could easily pass as a southerner. Perhaps not the threads, but otherwise he's fine. As far as his accent, I don't think it doesn't match anything at all. I think if he tried to speak like that down here, people would think he is trying to give a bad impersonation of us or something.
Don't get me wrong, he's top notch as far as acting goes, but the accent is quite bad. He's better than that.
@34m1G05 Exactly, considering the area is rapidly expanding.
The author drove down Durham's main street in the mid nineties, when it wasn't exactly the prettiest, and decided from that one image that he would lump the whole town as "dying." He has not been back since.
This movie grossly misrepresents Durham as a city and a community.
I actually worked for over a year at the Bike shop in front of the green car in 1:07,
That they managed to somehow cut out of the frame.
You can bet all 228,330 hicks in Durham are close knit. 5th largest city in the state of North Carolina, 85th largest in the United States, respectively. A true small town where everyone knows everyone. By the way I work in Durham, nobody really talks like that anymore. And Duke University? Tuition is 55k a year on average. Nobody in Durham has money either. It is dubbed the city of medicine, one of the best hospitals in the world. Lets tear the city down. Great plot.
HAHAHAHHA to everyone who is commenting on this. i live in durham. its nothing like this stupid ass movie..... hahahaha the fuck is this shit?!? noone is "southern" as in redneck around durham really, majority is african americans, and whites. its a more ghetto version of raleigh. but im not dissing it i love it! nothing like this stupid ass southern movie
I have never set foot on the South of the US, but even I thought that accent was terrible.
You can just tell Colin was like "Okay, I played a gay man - almost an Oscar; I play a stuttering king - Oscar! Now it´s time I go further: I'll go suthern".
Sorry Colin, I love you but there is such a thing as stepping too far out of your confort zone - back to Brith period dramas for a while, m'akay?
ABout half the cast is British! If I hadn't had the synopsis I would have thought this would be a great British film with Colin Firth & Orlando Bloom!
umm no. the accents are horrible. please stick to the "anywhere (generic) america" accent most foreign actors tend to do. Once you start going regional it doesn't work. Like this film.
okay i'm sorry but as a person who lives in South Carolina i must say this: WE ALL DO NOT TALK WITH A SOUTHERN DRAWL! those accents were horrible and i love my Mr. Darcy, but no sweet heart that didn't work.
So WTF is it about? I hate trailers like this. I'm skipping this movie out of spite

To be honest, our town is prosperous, what with Duke and biotech developments. Durham is nothing like this. The residents are nothing like this.
Despite the bad light we're being seen in, it is, if anything, fucking hilarious. I'm kind of looking forward to laughing my ass off the entire film.

Nevertheless, we enjoyed hosting the filmmakers and personally, I'd watch Colin Firth in anything.
