This clip reminded me of my friend who is a salesman, he was selling water saving shower heads that had really shitty pressure, so he took out the restricter on the water saver display head and restricted the drain on the regular heads tub to make the display appear to be using less water on the water saver head wile having the same pressure.. never trust a salesman, I'm sure the new i7 is good but this presentation seems unrealistic of the 1st gen i7. But Wow if true, it's unbelievable.
can't believe it. its true, the speed difference is insane. I checked out the spec sheets on AnandTech, and the 2630qm can turbo boost up to 2.6ghz in quad mode compared to my 720qm 1.73 O.o
@simranjeet36 not it isn't, the processors that were just released are only the consumer-end of the first half of the Sandy Bridge Microarchitecture, it allows what we consider high end performance to be approach at a much cheaper price, the i7 2600k has been shown to go toe to toe with the best stuff out there and it's only $329
@Salanmon dude...im just saying that any re release of an i3 i5 and i7 e.g. sandy bridge are not a worthy upgrade over a 1st gen i3 i5 or i7 (i dont want to fight)
@simranjeet36 your notion was that 2nd Gen was a gimmick which doesn't make sense, if you're trying to upgrade from something like a i7 960 then it isn't worth it, but anything from the i7 800 series the difference should be fairly clear. Sandy Bridge just got started, if the value CPUs can approach the high end stuff of 1st gen imagine it's higher end stuff late this year and all that is just the 1st half of this generation.
@Salanmon dude my friend had an i7 800 series and he upgraded to a i7 2600k and saw only a increase of like 10-15% he returned it and the money he got a new gtx 580 :) but i wont upgrade my i5 760 for a long time
@simranjeet36 I admit I got the numbering system confused, a high end i7 800 series does beat out a low end i7 900. so granted something like a i7 870 wouldn't need an upgrade. that said the i7 2600k almost always is on the top 3 in benchmark tests out of all of intels CPUs despite being a value Cpu
@Salanmon Benchmark tests are not the same as real-world application usage. SB might be good for me who is still stuck on Core 2 Duo but for i7 users, not worth the money. And the on-die GPU that is so hyped up can't be used on desktops if you have a discrete graphics card installed.
That is so stupid. This means that if I want to use SB's GPU, I can't use any ATI or Nvidia cards. See the problems here. I also can't overclock on H67 motherboards that use the on-die GPU.
@pratt123 what good would SB GPU be when you have a Geforce 400/500 series GTX or Radeon HD 6950 installed? the SB's GPU is meant for somewhat competent video processing without the need for a dedicated
card which does have some appeal, remember these are mainstream processors
@Salanmon First of all, it doesn't have to be a HD 6950 or high-end GTX card. NO discrete cards can be used with SB GPUs.
Second, you don't care about switchable graphics? I would love the option of switching between the SB GPU to save power and back to the discrete card for games and heavy media processing. Short-sighted for Intel to not include this option.
@pratt123 your monitor will probably connect the GPU some power is gonna be need to display an image, is the power usage between a decent GPU while doing normal web surfing and intel's GPU doing normal web surfing plus the separate GPU doing display that big a difference? hardly anyone switches between their GPU and on board video/graphic processing anyways, IMO not an option wroth slamming Intel over
@Salanmon Actually, yes it is. There is a significant power difference (and noise difference). Not to mention the card will last longer if you only use it when you need it.
And SB's GPU is supposed to be good enough to replace entry-level graphics cards. So it should have a switching option. If a key feature is the awesome on-die GPU, then don't force people with good GPUs into making this feature useless for them. Damn stupid of Intel.
IMO I don't think you know what you are talking about.
@pratt123 it's still a feature most won't use i'm not saying it wouldn't be nice, I would love line out on my Sansa Fuze (Mp3 player) but no ones gonna use it, does that make sandisk stupid for not putting it in? The GPU isn't hyped to be anything more than a competent GPU on the CPU
@Salanmon Says you. Lots of people would love to use switchable graphics. The power modes can be integrated with turning on/off the dedicated graphics card so the Intel GPU can be used. There are LOTS of uses for switchable graphics.
Your MP3 player example is deceiving. Not enough people demand that feature but this is a state-of-the-art CPU from Intel we are talking about. If they are going to brag on and on about their GPU (and they did), then it should be usable for people with GPU cards.
It's not a GPU based encoding, it's a built in HW h.264 encoder. Btw. try to imagine the entire CPU with only 1 core and no GPU...sooo small...they have to sell you something...
@ vckollavidura ok, that changes things then. I don't even think most BD disk have a 30mb bit rate. But he didn't mention the file size. Right off the bat I can tell you I can encode a 13gb (18mb bit rate) 1080p MKV file to say the original video except in avi in like 2 hours and a few extra minutes with my 720qm (remind u this is a mobile processor so the desktop i7 should blow the doors off mine). I find it hard to believe the 2nd gen i7 has that much of a speed difference.
Yea, I don't believe this at all. I have an i7-720qm in my laptop and I can convert 30mb in no time at all. I think this is just a strategy to get more people to buy the 2nd generation i7s.
faster yes but im sure they always compare video encoding, one with a gpu on chip and the other without it... so of course it makes the i7 look slow and yes it is that much slower at encoding/transcoding but who would do that without a gfx card BEFORE sandy bridge?
I really dont like the integrated card thing. I invision a future where people are forced to upgrade their cpu in order to get a better gpu as there will be no more discrete graphic cards. This would mark the end of my game rig building hobby.
when you want to make a tv look better in the store you push the blue up a bit and if you pull the blues back you see more red which is hard on the human eye. Can anyone else see the sales team at work here
@racingisfun I guess this means you are using a Westmere-based Gulftown CPU, such as the Core i7 980X. Please tell me I am correct; the Core i7 2600K pwns all the previous i7s, except the six-core ones.
@racingisfun sandy bridge beats i7 950 and all the D0/C0 Based i7 even if clocked equally at 4ghz, and and sandy bridge is only behind the 980x by about 2000 points in most bench marks
LGA1356 was canceled. LGA2011 will replace LGA1366 and LGA1567.
LGA1155 will be announced on the 6th Jan, and released on the 9th.
From Wikipedia: The land grid array (LGA) is a type of surface-mount packaging for integrated circuits (ICs) that is notable for having the pins on the socket rather than the integrated circuit. An LGA can be electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB) either by the use of a socket or by soldering directly to the board.
@Capeau No. These chips and the AMD "Fusion" chips are targeting business users. They're not designed, nor will they be designed, to match a discrete graphics solution. You have been the victim of advertising.
@Capeau No. This is specifically designed and targeted for business users to enhance business and design applications. It's not for gaming. The gaming performance will always be tailored to match the low-end discrete market. Anything you think you might know on the contrary is simply marketing and advertising.
The fact that you're defending integrated graphics proves you know just about dick. It's going to be great when you buy your fusion chip and you're forced to run low settings on any game that is gpu intensive (starcraft 2 is not gpu intensive in the slightest. it's a blizzard game, duh?).
I don't want to talk false marketing and advertising. I want to talk about you being brainwashed by it. Actually no I don't
@Capeau No blizzard game is GPU intensive. That's what they're known for. That's a big reason why World of Warcraft is so huge, you don't have to have a good video card to play it. This is where I shut you up with facts:
128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card (notice how old these cards are?)
"We've seen that StarCraft II is a CPU-limited title.."
"True to Blizzard Entertainment form, StarCraft II doesn't need a lot of horsepower to deliver attractive visuals.
@Capeau What do you know? Nothing, if you think fusion chips are going to compete with discrete graphics. 3d and visual effects don't have anything to do with computer hardware technology, sorry.
Go to the newegg channel and listen to the Intel rep tell you that the integrated graphics are designed to accelerate business and design apps. Then, come back here and tell me how revolutionary fusion/sandy-bridge is and how "the war against the GPU has begun", you fucking lemming.
@Capeau I've given you facts. You've given me nothing. Just the fact that you think integrated graphics will take over discrete graphics is funny as hell. It shows just how little you understand about hardware. The fact that you haven't gone over to the newegg channel and listened to the Intel tech specifically tell you what the chips are for only proves that you're an ignorant and stubborn person who doesn't care what the truth really is. Me, frustrated? No, I'm laughing at your ignorance. Nub.
Apparently, you haven't looked at the benchmarks yet (3dmark scores lower than a 6600gt, which is 7 generations old!!). It's amazing how you talk and talk without knowing the facts. You simply refuse to acknowledge that you were wrong. Man up, stop being a little bitch about it. Just say "ok fuck, I was wrong my bad".
@Capeau Not really. The fact that you can't use this GPU with dedicated GPU cards means that people will continue to require demanding cards for intensive applications (games, anyone?). If you can't use both at the same time, then the dedicated GPU is always preferred.
As for this "war", it started years ago when Intel put the GPU on package (not on-die) with the CPU.
When both GPUs can be used at the flick of a button, that is when lower-end graphics cards are doomed. Not before this.
I didnt say the gpu is doomed (yet). I sayed the was has started, not who has won!
Btw, the war against the dedicated gpu has begun indeed years ago (when intel started to work on larrabee), but it is only now that intel is making important steps forward.
I have a friend in youtube PWANMENT or something and he sad that he did a benchmark of i7 875k vs i7 2600k and the i7 875k almost won all the games!!!and in here they did i7 875k vs i7 2600k not even i7 920!!this is suck for desktop and gamers!!!the LGA2011 That's going to be beast but for now this i7 wont make a different!
In Q1 of 2011, Intel will release the 990X model. This will be the last LGA1366 processor. In Q2 or Q3, Intel will replace it with the Sandy Bridge version. It will require a new motherboard as it uses LGA1356 socket. (No, it is not backward compatible!)
Bullshit... Everybody knows damn well the current Core i7's aren't that slow. No proof as well. You know for sure they were using a Pentium Dual-Core on that shit...
@SimplyCarLo No, even with an i7 it will take a while encode an 80Gigabyte sourcefile. Nobody ever said that the Sandy is that much faster btw, it's just a lot more efficient at certain tasks.
@noxure: So, you're saying it's pointless to upgrade to the Sandy Bridge?... Ok! Done deal. I'm sticking with my current i7 then. That's all I needed to hear...
Sandy bridge is going to be called i3 i5 and i7 like the current models.
However, you can tell the difference between Sandy and the current processors, but the model number. Model number of Sandy-bridge is 2xxx (like i3 2120, i5 2500 etc). In other words sandy-bridge uses 4-digit, and the first digit is 2
Sandy Bridge has two major advantages over the current Core i7 series.
(1) Supports AVX instructions. => Shown by the photo app demo.
(2) Built-in transcoding hardware. => Shown by the video transcode demo.
Overall, its 10% faster than today's Core i7 series. (Using non-optimised AVX software or transcoding software.)
Of course, Intel is also working on the successor called Ivy Bridge. This comes in 2012 and doubles the execution units of its IGP. (Supports OpenCL/DirectCompute.)
@aussiebear22 well i upgraded my pc a year ago to lga 1156 socket to i7 -860 and know this it makes me kill my self seriously this huge performance differance its make me sad i hope good ol core 2 duo days come back when one socket was used for 5 years or less the intel lynfield just came in and know this this really bull shit
@mathias921 Well it really depends on if you are willing to wait. remember that tech always changes and even if you get the new CPU now, it will be old in a few months. So if you cant wait just buy and if you can wait for a little longer for the new LGA1356 then wait.
It all depends on what you have now. LGA2011 comes at around Q3 (July to Sept) or Q4 (Oct to Dec). If you really CANNOT wait because your current PC is too slow, then consider the LGA1155 version.
But if you CAN wait, then lean towards LGA2011. Intel will want their Sandy Bridge-E (LGA2011) to stomp on AMD's upcoming "Bulldozer" processors.
@xxxxxls2 hahaha , you have no idea what's going up, right there, do you??? sandy bridge its going to be part of the next generation of intel inside prossesors, so !!! this is NOT a WAR its just an upgrade , that's going to take intel inside company to the top !!! REMEMBER !!! ITS NOT A WAR !!!
@MrErjavec Cuda is a technology by Nvidia that some programs can use to process data, using your graphics card like a CPU, therefore speeding up a process. You need an 8600GTS card or better to use Cuda, and only some applications support it.
@MrErjavec From the top of my head, I know that Cyberlink MediaEspresso, Movavi video converter and Badaboomit all support Cuda, there are many others though. And I think Ati has a technology that is similar but not exactly the same

The 2600k is barely stable at stock speeds with its stock cooler, so I would go for the 990x if i had the money. Unfortunately I don't :)
If you're only planning to game though, the 2600k will provide roughly the same performance. If you want to use it to render, go with the 990x.

@nicksworld25 its tru i've done benchmarkin and the 1st gen came ahead of the 2nd gen in many cases..its just a gimmick
simranjeet36 1 year ago
@simranjeet36 not it isn't, the processors that were just released are only the consumer-end of the first half of the Sandy Bridge Microarchitecture, it allows what we consider high end performance to be approach at a much cheaper price, the i7 2600k has been shown to go toe to toe with the best stuff out there and it's only $329
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon dude...im just saying that any re release of an i3 i5 and i7 e.g. sandy bridge are not a worthy upgrade over a 1st gen i3 i5 or i7 (i dont want to fight)
simranjeet36 1 year ago
@simranjeet36 your notion was that 2nd Gen was a gimmick which doesn't make sense, if you're trying to upgrade from something like a i7 960 then it isn't worth it, but anything from the i7 800 series the difference should be fairly clear. Sandy Bridge just got started, if the value CPUs can approach the high end stuff of 1st gen imagine it's higher end stuff late this year and all that is just the 1st half of this generation.
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon dude my friend had an i7 800 series and he upgraded to a i7 2600k and saw only a increase of like 10-15% he returned it and the money he got a new gtx 580 :) but i wont upgrade my i5 760 for a long time
simranjeet36 1 year ago
@simranjeet36 I admit I got the numbering system confused, a high end i7 800 series does beat out a low end i7 900. so granted something like a i7 870 wouldn't need an upgrade. that said the i7 2600k almost always is on the top 3 in benchmark tests out of all of intels CPUs despite being a value Cpu
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon Benchmark tests are not the same as real-world application usage. SB might be good for me who is still stuck on Core 2 Duo but for i7 users, not worth the money. And the on-die GPU that is so hyped up can't be used on desktops if you have a discrete graphics card installed.
That is so stupid. This means that if I want to use SB's GPU, I can't use any ATI or Nvidia cards. See the problems here. I also can't overclock on H67 motherboards that use the on-die GPU.
pratt123 1 year ago
@pratt123 what good would SB GPU be when you have a Geforce 400/500 series GTX or Radeon HD 6950 installed? the SB's GPU is meant for somewhat competent video processing without the need for a dedicated
card which does have some appeal, remember these are mainstream processors
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon First of all, it doesn't have to be a HD 6950 or high-end GTX card. NO discrete cards can be used with SB GPUs.
Second, you don't care about switchable graphics? I would love the option of switching between the SB GPU to save power and back to the discrete card for games and heavy media processing. Short-sighted for Intel to not include this option.
pratt123 1 year ago
@pratt123 your monitor will probably connect the GPU some power is gonna be need to display an image, is the power usage between a decent GPU while doing normal web surfing and intel's GPU doing normal web surfing plus the separate GPU doing display that big a difference? hardly anyone switches between their GPU and on board video/graphic processing anyways, IMO not an option wroth slamming Intel over
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon Actually, yes it is. There is a significant power difference (and noise difference). Not to mention the card will last longer if you only use it when you need it.
And SB's GPU is supposed to be good enough to replace entry-level graphics cards. So it should have a switching option. If a key feature is the awesome on-die GPU, then don't force people with good GPUs into making this feature useless for them. Damn stupid of Intel.
IMO I don't think you know what you are talking about.
pratt123 1 year ago
@pratt123 it's still a feature most won't use i'm not saying it wouldn't be nice, I would love line out on my Sansa Fuze (Mp3 player) but no ones gonna use it, does that make sandisk stupid for not putting it in? The GPU isn't hyped to be anything more than a competent GPU on the CPU
Salanmon 1 year ago
@Salanmon Says you. Lots of people would love to use switchable graphics. The power modes can be integrated with turning on/off the dedicated graphics card so the Intel GPU can be used. There are LOTS of uses for switchable graphics.
Your MP3 player example is deceiving. Not enough people demand that feature but this is a state-of-the-art CPU from Intel we are talking about. If they are going to brag on and on about their GPU (and they did), then it should be usable for people with GPU cards.

Xellon100 1 year ago
Yea, I don't believe this at all. I have an i7-720qm in my laptop and I can convert 30mb in no time at all. I think this is just a strategy to get more people to buy the 2nd generation i7s.
Xellon100 1 year ago

LGA1155 will be announced on the 6th Jan, and released on the 9th.
From Wikipedia: The land grid array (LGA) is a type of surface-mount packaging for integrated circuits (ICs) that is notable for having the pins on the socket rather than the integrated circuit. An LGA can be electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB) either by the use of a socket or by soldering directly to the board.

@Capeau No. This is specifically designed and targeted for business users to enhance business and design applications. It's not for gaming. Capeau 1 year ago
@Capeau Having trouble using the internet?
Off course? Yes, you are way off course.

Capeau 1 year ago
@Capeau No blizzard game is GPU intensive. That's what they're known for. That's a big reason why World of Warcraft is so huge, you don't have to have a good video card to play it. This is where I shut you up with facts:
128 MB PCIe NVIDIA® GeForce® 6600 GT or ATI Radeon® 9800 PRO video card (notice how old these cards are?)
"We've seen that StarCraft II is a CPU-limited title.."
"True to Blizzard Entertainment form, StarCraft II doesn't need a lot of horsepower to deliver attractive visuals.
mhaneline 1 year ago

Have you actually played starcraft at lowest settings (needed for those cards you named)?
I guess not because it looks awefull and the intel demo was AT LEAT running at medium settings.

The fact that you haven't gone over to the newegg channel and listened to the Intel tech specifically tell you what the chips are for only proves that you're an ignorant and stubborn person who doesn't care what the truth really is. It using system ram and not video ram is a GOOD thing!
Capeau 1 year ago
@Capeau Not really. The fact that you can't use this GPU with dedicated GPU cards means that people will continue to require demanding cards for intensive applications (games, anyone?). If you can't use both at the same time, then the dedicated GPU is always preferred.
As for this "war", it started years ago when Intel put the GPU on package (not on-die) with the CPU.
When both GPUs can be used at the flick of a button, that is when lower-end graphics cards are doomed. Not before this.
pratt123 1 year ago
@pratt123
I didnt say the gpu is doomed (yet). I sayed the was has started, not who has won!

(Supports OpenCL/DirectCompute.)

najibbakr 1 year ago
@najibbakr
Unfortunately, Sandy Bridge uses new CPU sockets that aren't backward compatible with any of today's current processors.
LGA1155 => Budget to Mainstream market.
LGA2011 => Enthusiast/Workstation/Server market.
If you've already got a LGA1156 setup now, then upgrade in 2012 or 2013.
2012 = Ivy Bridge (Continues to use LGA1155 from Sandy Bridge.)
2013 = Haswell (Very likely to use a new socket.)
There's no harm in skipping a generation if your current system suits your needs.
aussiebear22 1 year ago
@aussiebear22
Great guide man, however.. do you think a purchase of a
LGA 1366 i7 950 today is such a good idea - or should I
wait until ''LGA2011''?
Thanks in advance
Mathias921
mathias921 1 year ago
@mathias921 Well it really depends on if you are willing to wait. remember that tech always changes and even if you get the new CPU now, it will be old in a few months. So if you cant wait just buy and if you can wait for a little longer for the new LGA1356 then wait.
Light1c3 1 year ago
@mathias921
Forget about LGA1366 its a dead-end.
aussiebear22 1 year ago
@aussiebear22
Sandy Bridge-E = LGA 2011?
