  • how do i install programs on linux someone please help me ive bean trying for a week now and its really making me mad im trying to install firefox but i dont know how

  • HOLY SHIT DUDE, I have the same neetbook and the same distro, and I HAVE A PROBLEM, here it goes: both Ethernet port & wireless Internet are not working, what could I do naaaaaaaaaaaw? some one says that I need to install the restricted driver for wireless, and that I need to reinstall ubuntu whit the ethernet cable connected to the computer and the modem.

  • Is there a way to uninstall this and get WinXP?

  • I have this on my 1101, but i changed the operating system to windows 7 somehow, how do i get it back to this?

  • Do you remember how?

  • I think this UI is nice for people who never used a computer before and need it for basic stuff like surfing the web/chat and listening music.

  • So, does the MiE completely get in the way and refuse to let you run the system the way you'd like? I intend to get a nix netbook, but am thinking that Verizon is sending me a coupon for a netbook from HP so I could hopefully grab one of these instead of the XP one they are recommending. Though even if I wipe it myself and reinstall I'd pick this over another point for MS market share.

  • To all of the ones that ask if certain Windows software into this, simply no. This is GNU/Linux, Ubuntu flavoured, with a custom interface.

  • If it will run Wine it will run a LOT of windows programs, Starcraft included, but Office depends on the Version. For the iTunes Junkies AmaroK or Rythmbox are both much better than iTunes, but I'mnot sure about iPhone support. Go to WineHQ and look at compatability for what youwant to use. I honestly have no programs that I can't run with Wine, or in the case of some of my older games DOSBox, while I'm sure others will find someprograms lacking I have been able to run every Win32 Program I use.

  • I believe there is really no need for alternatives. Unless you need some software to produce and work, then it's all fine. If what happens is that you don't know about what to use, go to some Alternatives page, like AlternativeTo, OSAlt, etc, and look for it.

  • Of course I know about WinE, but many people ask for the same FPS in games, and the same perfomance in general.

Also, WinE is only for 32-bit systems (natively, atm), which reduces the use for those in a 64-bit system.

There are more than WinE, made for different things like Cedega and PlayOnLinux (for games), and CrossOver *, which is WinE in steroids, for a better perfomance in general.

  • that really limits what you can do on the netbook

i'd rather have the ability to install some programs like microsoft office, or iTunes.

this turns the pc into a media device, much like an iPod touch, zune hd, or archos

  • 2:42 sec, is a 100% COPYING off of APPLE!!!!

  • I can't download any software like adobe fireworks or anything else. Why?

  • how do you get music on there?

  • how much it cost that one? plz answer me

  • it costs like about $280-$300

  • I need to say, HP really aced the OS for these things, though i will be getting a XP one.

  • canu get aim and frostwire

  • I bought one about a month ago and overall it's not bad, but there are a couple limitations. The desktop setup isn't very customizable and the command line interface is practically disabled.

Anybody know how to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on this machine?

  • can you download AIM for Linux?

  • they have an AIM client that comes with it called pidgin

  • is there anything similar to microsoft office on this?

  • Yea Open Office .. Available For Linux, OSX and Windows

  • Are Open Office files compatible with Microsoft Office files? And is the suite free? Thanks in advance

  • oh yes! they are compatible and free.

  • yeah it opens pretty much anything. And yes its completely free

  • i just need office 2007 and starcraft does this mini netbook suport it?

  • No, this is not a Windows computer. You can buy the HP Mini 1000 w/ Windows XP though.

  • are you able to install Ubuntu over the MI Os??

  • since Mi is basically just an HP-configured session with HP apps running on top of Ubuntu, there's probably a way to log in and just bring up GNOME or something.

If there's any way at all to get to a terminal (one would hope ctrl+alt+f1 would still work) and if HP gives you the root password (o lord they ought to) then I don't see it being too much of a problem.

  • With the right windows emulation tools you can do just about anything on linux just ask your question in google and read some tutorials

  • can u install limewire

  • idk y they gave u a -1 ill add +1 right now but yea u really can add limewire. limewire does support linux

  • use frostwire

  • Since this is OBVIOUSLY a build on the Ubuntu platform of Linux - does this build have the accessibility features of Ubuntu? Ubuntu has Orca, magnifier, etc. Thanks!

  • What kind of programs can you download to it?

  • Ubuntu has a wide range of software available for free. Everything from full digital recording suites to dorky little games. You can try out ubuntu linux for free with the wubi installer. It will let you run linux in your windows system to try it out. If you don't like it just uninstall wubi. If you like it you can migrate it to its own partition.

  • I'm definitely getting one of these.

Does anyone know if WINE works with this?

  • It's linux so WINE has to work on this.

  • cool

  • Go Ubuntu! Getting some good penetration in these big hardware vendors. I'm currently drooling over these small-form-factor netbooks that come preinstalled with Ubuntu.

  • Charlie Daniels is the king

  • I us a nokia n800 as a portable device. Fits in the pocket and can run this ubuntu netbook remix.(although I dont) Plays h.264 flash video aac mp3 ogg flac audio. Carman though is the best phone feature ever. OBD 2 speedometer and diagnosis integrated with gps and audio player. The mozilla browser is sweet also. I hate to say it but adblock is a must on portables.

  • LINUX baby

  • Oh, its you again... spamming anyone who is interested in this item with your negative astroturfing bullshit. Tell you what, if you don't like it, watch something else dickweed.

  • fuck you! I am not dictating anything, but just expressing my honest opinion. I wouldn't watch this video if I wasn't trying to see what the hell is all the hype all about and after listening to this annoying sales dude, who keeps telling bull to everyone about how good this product is I felt I should open some nube's eyes to a different kind a view. So shut your mouth, you dirty poop hole!

  • Nah you're the Windows Mobile fanboy who likes taking it up the ass from Sweaty Ballmer.

  • fan? Not really, but the phone has the things I use on a daily basis, the kind of things you don't find in other phones on a market. I don't like WM in particular and I wouldn't recommend it to most noobies out there, because you have to be a geek to be able to use it and keep it running, nor do I like MS too much, especially in the last 9 years or so. That's why I recommended an iPhone to most noobies, including you, schoolboy. Listen up and you might learn something.

  • Sorry, there is nothing to be learned from someone who thinks Windows Mobile is of any interest to geeks.

  • That is when your eyes and ears are stuffed with shit you can't see and hear anything, except crap bubbling all around you. If you did have some sort of vision, then you'd be able see that I never mentioned WM to be the choice of geeks. I simply said that in order to use WM, you have to be a geek, because it's way too user unfriendly for most noobies, such as yourself, dumpster head. Although there are a lot of geeks who actually do love to mess with WM. Check out xda-developers site, shitty-boy

  • "it's way too user unfriendly for most noobies, such as yourself, dumpster head."

I don't use WM it because I'm not stupid enough to buy a device that uses shit software like WM. Unlike yourself.

"Although there are a lot of geeks who actually do love to mess with WM."

Oh really. I am a technician, I was at a company wide meeting just last night that was full of technicians. NOBODY uses it. Why ? Because its shit.

  • WM is complete shit.

"a company with 4 techs, that maybe 2 of which you have talked to"

No less than 18 highly competent technicians were at that particular meeting. I spoke to everyone. I don't give a shit if that's not solid enough for you.

  • "I don't give a shit ..." - I know, you want to keep all the shit to yourself.

"not solid enough for you" - hell no, all you tell me is same shit that keeps bubbling out of your mouth. There aren't too many alternative on the market yet to iPhone and Windows Mobile. All other crap, like RIM's Blackberry, now Nokia owned Symbian OS, etc - these don't have nearly as much software written for them or supported hardware. So those "competent" techs ate as much shit as you did for breakfast, dumpster.

  • lol what a dickweed. Tell you what, if you ever come to where I work and try to tell me my job, I'll tell you, "there's the door, walk through it sunshine".

  • Jeez, work where you work? No, thanks! I have much better place in this life than hanging out with some shitty dudes. You must be really, really stupid to say something like that. In what world do you think I will be working where you work? I wouldn't reduce myself to that, ass-head.

  • Does this computer come with the mobile internet or is it something you have to buy seperate?

  • Probably buy separate...most netbooks don't have that standard.

  • ooops i mean it only has 16 gb memory

  • yay and i just got one last week, i like it but theres a few things i hate, like it only has 6 gb memory and it is really slow!! like im not realy used to it yet but ill get used to it lol.

  • The HP website says this unit has a 60gb hard drive.

  • approx. when will this be available? on the MIE o/s, is there an instant messenger or office document tools that enable you to write documents or do a powerpoint?

  • does mie come with the hp mini 1000???

    please reply!

  • It will be an option starting early next year. It's currently unavailable and Windows XP is the only option for now.

  • so if i buy it now will i be able to get mie later because i dont want to buy it and not get the full experience. and will i be able to transfer my data to it

  • do you have to download Mobile Internet Experience (Linux) ?

  • I definitely think this is one of the most stylish looking Netbook interfaces for Linux, I think it will be on the same level as with Dell's strategy. Also the continuity of the shiny black goes on in all applications, so it looks sleeker. This will give a huge plus in Preformence and maybe a teeny bit in battery life, and of course price. Hope It gets here soon!

  • There would be other applications that do the job of iTunes (place music onto your iPod). There's a Linux alternate for almost every application, such as Pidgin, XMMS, etc.

  • I think MIE is better than Windows XP in terms of it taking less resources to run and delivering exactly the functionality the Mini is designed for. The downside is that you won't be able to add applications such as iTunes as readily as you're used to using Windows XP.

  • I thought it was based on Ubuntu and will have the application download and install program. I heard that apps that are vetted by HP will be in there, so you should be able to do everything.

  • You are correct, there will be apps that are vetted by HP.

There are music player alternatives but there's no Apple iTunes for Linux.

  • Would you be able to use the zune software on this?

  • If there is a Linux analogue then you most probably will. (but it won't be the software you got with your Zune as that is probably only for Windows)

  • or is it like the ipod touch

  • would you consider MIE better than windows xp

  • not better- different in that it's lighter weight and cheaper. Nice UI.

  • can you have itunes on mie

  • Not itunes, but there are music library alternatives

  • i have a question, u said not itunes? i am getting one for christmas so that means i can't download itunes on it? cause i use itunes all the time

  • You won't be able to use iTunes with the MIE Mini 1000. If iTunes is important you should get the Windows XP version.

If you have a lot of Apple iTunes Music Store music with DRM you won't be able to play any of it on the MiE HP Mini.

However, if you plan on continuing to sync your iPod with your MacBook Pro (I assume you have one because of your nick name) there are alternatives. You could rip all of your music to mp3s, or another format that the built-in media library/player can work with.

  • oh, thx nvm, it is a windows xp version, thats good cause i always use itunes!

  • hi macbookpro57, i own the hp mini 1033cl(windows xp version) and i love it. i was going to get the MIE one but no itunes was a big no no because i have a iphone 3g and i need to upload stuff to it all the time. pm me if you have any questions on the xp version

  • ok thx i just got one with windows xp for christmas and i have 3 ipods so i really need itunes!

  • wait, are u talking about the hp mini 1000 because you said the 1033? is it the same?

  • So you are so locked in to iTunes you're letting Apple dictate your purchasing decisions now ? If iTunes has that much control over your decisions its time to start looking at other sources.

  • BTW, I don't have an iPhone, nor am I a music freek who can't get his ears off the MP3 player, but if I was looking for a device such as this, I would rather have it in my pocket than dragging this bulky piece around, which doesn't do much crap anyways. iPhone is something that "most" people choose for mobile internet-phone. Personally I have a Windows Mobile phone, because of things like built-in keyboard, talking caller id, searchable "Notes", GPS with turn-by-turn and more that iphone has not

  • macbookpro57,

it the same. but thats what the name of the model with windows xp

  • oh ok ya thats the same one as mine lol
