  • I'll die to paint like this , I bought your DVD , thank you for sharing .

  • Could anyone tell me what he used to seal the pencil drawing? Was it just standard fixitive?

  • @Phlaneran it was more than likely a polyurethane. You can find it at walmart or any craft store near you it's a sealer for charcoal, contae crayon, graphite and soft pastels. If sprayed lightly it won't seal it so much that paint won't stick to it. It's usually only about 3 to 5 dollars.

  • @museofink Thanks ! :)

  • @Phlaneran no problem.

  • What did he use to spray? Why?

  • woW. . . Great ever. . .

  • i realized how much time i have wasted on useless things, i should have sticked on practicing my drawing skills D';

  • Anyone know what kinda paint he used ???I no its oil the brand??

  • @8freemind7: It's mostly Rembrandt Brand oil paint.

  • Hey guys this is a good stuff. Very nice work, please keep posting!!!

  • also a great book btw

  • You sir, are amazing.

  • there is no water color in this vid by the way. as the title implies its an oil painting demo.

  • hard work and dedication kiddies is all it takes. many of u can be even better than this. the magic is TIME and EFFORT.

  • This man is a wizard!

  • Go ahead.... make an epic video of an epic painting.... this made me want to burn my paintings lol

  • My fave covers he does are the mercy thompson series but I love all the rest too, omg that cover was amazing and so is he!

  • Is he copying another illustration or what?

  • @bordereye I believe that is his reference photo he is looking at.

  • notice he sprays it after the sketch, that is mostly likely fixative to stop the sketch smudging when he adds watercolour.

  • I cannot breathe

  • absolutely wonderful!!!

  • AWESOME! Love this/your sound :D you have a new fan from a musician who is a youtube partner and growing in the UK!

There's some really interesting covers on my page too with crazy HD videos :) Would appreciate you checking it out if you get a chance, promise you'll like it!

But by the way he is so amazing I think I'll sell my art stuff and implore mercy...

  • Please check out my illustrated book on my channel. Illustrated on photoshop.

  • There's one problem, the painting is freaking 3D and it's scaring me how real it looks.

  • @EmmyGurl523 Towards the end when he was painting the sword i for a second thought he was painting on a real sword lol

  • WOW!!! it's beautiful!! i never get tired of watching this vid!

  • amazzing......d glow dat is been brot is commendble!!!!!

  • wow... that is amaising, i absolutely FAIL at painting though im fairly good at drawing.

  • 5:12 I started to cry out loud.

  • I probably watched this about 15 times for the past 2 years. Everytime I find something new!

  • In the beginning stages, is that a photo reference, or did he paint the original on the computer or something? I'm confused on that part. Otherwise, great technique.

  • You def inspired me. Thank you so much for uploading this video. =)

  • oh austri god of colours ;D

wow i'm so in love with this story and this picture ;)

  • Hmm the Color on 0:50 is not oil, it's Acryl based Color i used for my Airbrush works too.

  • lesson on color theory:)

  • Beautiful. You're a very talented and dedicated artist! Very inspiring. Keep up the amazing work!

  • ah, eh....but...that was graphite, and then watercolor, but then you did the majority with oil...

    DAMN!

  • what media was he using to paint with at the very beginning? was it gouache? :S

  • You don't make me want to quit. You inspire me to keep going.

  • He made it look so real I thought i could touch her and she's so vibrant! Talent.

  • what are some of the supplies that u used in the artwork

  • I'm an artist, man this is so different from me hey, I couldn't stand painting like this... going over it again and again and again... the hours and hours spent on something that just wouldn't be worth enough money to waster that much time on. Th most painful thing watching this is how he keeps changing his mind over and over again on how he wants the nose. I guess I could never be an oil painter.

  • @Alesxca everyone starts at the bottom, just gotta practice. I can promise you that he wasn't creating works at this level at the start of his training

  • @Alesxca haha. Well, it depends upon how much you're selling the finished painting for. He's an illustrator, so he's doing this for a publisher, which pays him good money. It's basically part of their marketing and advertising.

If you're a fine artist, you're selling paintings to super rich people who buy art, fancy cars, yachts, homes in the Hamptons, and get trophy wives, etc as status symbols. If you're trying to sell art to middle class people, you'll starve, unless you're selling prints.

  • @Alesxca be confident ...just try and try dont let yourself down ...:D

  • soooo much detail.

  • This is oil painting?!? :/ LAME!!! jk this was amazing work :p

  • you are a genius!!!! pencil, spray, then paint!!! OMG i cant wait to try this technique! i thought i found a cool technique (water color pencil drawing on canvas, then use white oil paint to blend, but then i would lose the original drawing sometimes with over blending.) A+++++

  • When he starts paiting you just go like NOESS OMG IT WAS GOOD THE WAY IT WAS and then he finishes and you just stfu.

  • I seriously love this and Dan dos Santos is my inspiration!!! Steinart

  • How can you possibly dislike this?

  • @zerocaige Some people could be jealous :)

  • I love his work on the Mercy Thompson Book Series.

  • what are you dipping it inbetween colors is that baby oil or varnish

  • @nomona84 i have a feeling that it might be linseed oil

  • i love in videos how you think its about over.. but theres still 1/2 to 3/4th of the video left

    this is freaking beautiful!!!

  • I wish I could draw realism like that. I have one oil painting on youtube, "Angel at my door" on my channel.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • That´s great love the way you work :)

  • those 5 people who disliked this are just jelouse that they couldn't do that

  • Part 1: "Wow, he really nailed that sketch, that looks great!"

Part 2: "Dang, that is some solid water color. I hope I'm that good someday."

Part 3: "Holy Crap. I quit. I'm not worthy to hold a paint brush."

  • @tehditchdiver That's a crap attitude to take. Wanna know the difference between this guy and you? Time. That's it. When I went to art college I was a natural. I was "the best" artist in the class according to everyone. By the time I finished school, people who LITERALLY could not draw stick figures, had styles I wish I had.

If this is something you are passionate about, take the time to develop YOUR style, and stop worrying about everyone else's. Do it because you love it, not to impres othrs

  • @tehditchdiver

but its a oil painting demo. wheres the water media?

  • what did you sprayed over the picture after you get the pencil outlines?

  • magnific

  • beautiful pencil drawing into a gorgeous painting...great work!!! :-)

  • WOW! I couldn't bring myself to paint over the pencil drawing. That itself was beautiful.

  • this is amazing

  • i got so excited when i heard the music. i love ratatat

  • 0.52 are they inks he's using?

  • @gingerbap09 yeah I think they are

  • It's a beautiful painting, but I never really thought it fit as the cover of Warbreaker. Is that supposed to be Vivenna, or Siri? I guess the exhaled rainbow ribbon is meant to be bioChroma, but it's not a great representation of the magic, IMHO. And please don't tell me that sword is supposed to be Nightblood. :/ BEAUTIFUL painting, but only an average book cover.

  • @FarLyannaMai I know how you feel man. I think it has to be vivenna since siri didn't use any Breath, but a sword like night blood was black bladed with a smoke bleeding off the blade, meant to suck the Breath of its owner...sounded epic. But like you said, along with everyone else, the illustration is to die for. Once I learn how to draw, I think I'll draw scenes from books I've read!

  • "Dont judge a book by its cover"--- psh yea THINK AGAIN! Amazing amazing paintings to go along with amazing books.

  • i paint laptops and pc cases :)

  • I was searching for Beginner oil videos & this came up. I don't quite think that's beginner but it's Amazing! Her hair just glows! Great work!

  • I dont really get the cover, so is that Vivenna?

  • ok those 5 dislikes have to be an accident

  • whoa human photoshop =()

  • What did he spay over it when he was done with the sketch? o.o

  • @sailormoon3131 Probably a fixative

  • U R KIDDING ME!! THAT LOOKS SO REAL AND PERFECT I HAVE SHIVERS WHILE I WAS WAtCHING THE VIDEO

  • whats the name of tha music??? pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • @guilhermewonsik The song is Gettysburg by Ratatat

  • @Vampgirlrules thankssssss

  • godlike, best video on youtube

  • wow!

  • 5 people missed the like button because they couldn't take their eyes off this masterpiece

  • Excuse me... I seem to have dropped my jaw somewhere around here....

  • how did you get into this?

  • :O AMAZING!!

  • what type of pencil is he using in the beginning???

  • that was just out of the world AWESOME!

  • I wanted the video to never end.

  • so imam make u an offer here... if i fuck u will u give me lessons?

  • To those who clicked 'dislike'- Why dislike beauty? Absolutely awe-inspiring <3

  • @TonyZeTigaa123 Jealousy.

  • WOW! its amazing!

  • Pure talent! Just fantastic! I don't understand why you use the ink, is that ink? Then the oil? Why not all in oil?

  • AMAZING!!! i have just ordered the book and cant wait to read it. Just watching the man painting the cover makes me want to read it even more!!!

I read the mistborn trilogy and thought it was the best set of books i had ever read!!!!

  • @stevespira10A i was thinking about buying those! I like warbreaker enough and I heard mistborn was like fighting oriented.

  • @t260y If u liked warbreaker- u should like mistborn!

What i liked about the mistborn trilogy was that each book was so strong on its own. While it told one big story, it also had major events that made each book strong storywise.

It has great; characters, magic systems, politics, enemies and fight scenes! Book one was great because the whole mystery surrounding the dark lord was so interesting.

The trilogy is def worth a read! Hope this helps u mate!

  • When he was doing the chest piece, I almost forgot that it was flat and not 3-dimensional!

  • wow that was simply amazing!

  • Oh god. That part where he paints the face is like... absolute artist porn. I think I need to watch that again.

  • did he use the grid square method to draw?

  • @1mcool Um, no. That's a good method to learn, but it hampers you incredibly as an artist.

  • @WieldtheKey i know, it is quite litterally just another form of tracing but great for creating photorealistic works or drawing accurate elevation drawings of cities from photos

  • @1mcool Like I said, true development occurs when you learn to draw those things without any crutches like grids.

  • weak ass painting annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd thats not oil!!

  • You are truly an incredible artist. Amazing job

  • Man dan! This is Unreal! Thanks for the inspiration

  • Thanks for the demo. You are very good.

  • Just amazing man, this is my first time seeing an oil painting to dude

  • Loved her hair and her face pause.

  • AMAZING FOLDS.@diamonddonut

  • fucking amazing

  • WOW!! The sword is my favorite part, it is so real, I don't understand how you got there... However, I liked the woman more when she had those different, unrealistic hues of purple, green and blue!!

  • This is absolutely magical! I watched this with my jaw on the floor for the entire 5 minutes and 30 seconds. The artist is a genius. How anyone can begin with a blank canvas and end with perfect beauty is astonishing. I especially adored the work on the face and the sword. Well done!

  • love the cover, love the book, love this drawing and love this music. (:

i read the free, legal version of brandon sanderson's Warbreaker online before it was published, then bought it when it came out, partly because the book was so awesome, partly because of how beautiful the cover was. awesome video, and excellent job on the cover!
