@tg0926 They played this on the Family Channel where I'm from at 6 a.m. I was so glad to see that they still put his movies on t.v. Jim's memory will still live on.
I love this song, it rings so true. Another good one to listen to after "gee I'm glad it's raining" is "It won't rain all the time" by Jane Siberry. RIP Jim Varney/Ernest P Worell - you are sorely missed!
I loved this song in this movie! When I die I want this song played at my funeral. Anyone know who sang this originially! I would love to download it!
Gee I'm glad it's raining There's always something to be thankful for. I'm awfully glad it's raining Cause no one sees your tear drops when it pours. And no one knows the thunder Is your heartbreak in disguise, They think the rainy nights. What put that sad look in your eyes. Sure am glad it's raining. The gentle rythmn soothes the pain inside. I'm glad the stars aren't shining.A wounded warrior needs a place to hide. I thought I had found someone. I could count on til the end.
What they wanted was a hero, All I needed was a friend. Gee I'm glad it's raining.I hope the morning sun won't come up soon. As long as it keeps raining, No one knows my heart broke right in two. I thought I had found someone. I could count on til the end. What they wanted was a hero,All I needed was a friend. Sure am glad it's raining. I'm awfully glad it's raining
I literally every time I watched this part as a kid and 1 as a adult was in tears I cried n I mean cried over this song n movie, Like water works I tell you and not so mushy but it touched me, I love this movie!!! Love Ernest!!!
Man I used to love these movies as a kid. I remembered this song was depressing but wow, it's still upsetting to see Ernest down. This song is really well written though. Whoever wrote it had some considerable songwriting talent.
Jim Varney you could have a great singing career and might have won a grammy. I will always love you, you are damn funny to the bone. I always look to you to cheer me up.
Just saw the Siskle/Ebert drivel which just goes to show why Ernest has more fans than they do; When these goons don't like a movie, I know it's going to be good. They do not understand "range!" Too bad one's dead and the other on the way out so they could read how stupid the people think they truly were.
@AlMelco Amen to that!! If I didn't have a mind of my own and listened to them, I would've missed out on some really great movies, like the Ernest ones, and watched some pretty crappy ones, though I'm not saying what they are on a Jim Varney site out of respect.
I saw this movie years ago, on a date. The man I was with, cried at this song. I had respect for him, I understood his reasons. It did surprise me, though, since I didn't think this was the kind of movie that typically makes people cry. Now I see he wasn't the only one. (Incidentally, I later married him, although he is deceased now as well. I hope he and Jim Varney have shaken hands up there.)
@jhillst Actually, Jim Varney sings very well. But the way he sang as Ernest was so cute and hearbreaking. I like the slightly off key sound Ernest makes.
This song used to make me cry when I was a kid. I felt so sad for Ernest. Still makes me crack a tear or two :'( RIP Jim Varney, I consider you my childhood friend, and someday I hope to see you again
2/10/11-Jim Varney, you are missed not only today but everyday. You were a wonderful person and a brilliant actor. You are forever in our hearts. We are still down here, loving and laughing at your movies.
I hope to be able to meet you one day. You had a way of making others actors kind of fade into the background whenever you were on screen. You had such a caring and giving spirit. R.I.P James Albert Varney June15, 1949-February 10, 2000.
He sang this song with so much passion. I hated that Ernest always got picked on. I know it's just a movie but I always get mad when those boys called him a loser and gave him poison ivy as a get well present. Everytime he was treated badly, I just wanted to give him a big hug. especially when he sang this song and had that pained look on his face. He still found the positive in everything and everybody. I loved his optimism and energy.
@InDeAskY1 You took the words right out of my mouth. Great Comment. That's what I like about Jim Varney aka Ernest P. Worrell, he's a man that knows how to turn a frown upside down and knows how to fight happiness in tough situations.
@MightyDancer80 Thanks. What I don't understand is that Varney was nominated for a 'Razzie' 4 portraying Ernest P. Worrell in this movie, & the next year, he won an Emmy for what? Portraying Ernest P. Worrell. Varney definitely didn't get the credit he deserved. Even after 25 years, I still get excited whenever I put in an Ernest movie. I just got finished watching the 'Christmas' 1 this morning, which I can watch at any season. Too bad he didn't get 2 save Easter and the 4th of July, 2.
@MagiaSan Oh, yeah, I know. If he didn't get picked on then we wouldn't pull 4 Ernest N every movie. The writing was very well done. Make the underdog the hero regardless of the obstacles N his way, give him a good attitude, a great spirit & a warm smile. He might be sad briefly, but we root 4 him 2 always make it 2 the top N the end which he does. He wasn't a CEO or VP; just an average, next door type of guy. That always made it easier 2 relate 2 his troubles. That's why Ernest always rules!
@InDeAskY1 Yes, That is why Ernest would be one of the best next door neighbours ever, I would happily be Vern. Though mind you, I wasn't as keen on Slam Dunk Ernest though, I did like it, but I think they got him wrong in that.
@MagiaSan I have all the Ernest movies. "Slam Dunk Ernest" was good. I really can't blame him 2 much 4 his slightly inflated ego. He was finally getting attention. I didn't like the fact that the Clean Sweep team was 2 abusive toward Ernest. What I love best about Ernest is the fact that he's not hoity-toity. If he presented himself as Astor Clement first, I'm pretty sure no movies would've been made. I love the Astor character but wouldn't associate with a person like him N the real world.
@InDeAskY1 I too have them all, and love each and every one, but with Slam Dunk it wasn't his ego that was the problem for me, that is still one of his lovable quirks, but it was the fact that the writer had Ernest do it for money, if it had been for the girl, which would have worked as far as the movie is concerned anyway, than fine. But Ernest was always the sort of person not to care about money. Knowhutimean? Small point yes, but...
@MagiaSan 1 of the parts I did have trouble with N "Slam Dunk Ernest" was that fashion shoot. That is not Ernest. Fame & fortune was never his goal. He let it get 2 him briefly. All he wanted was 2 B included & 2 B one of the guys. 'Erma'? Well, she didn't deserve Ernest. All she cared about was 'more money'. Ernest realized that in the end & went back to being that good 'ol Ernest we love. Daniel Butler wrote this show. I also remember watching him host "America's Dumbest Criminals".
This is such a sweet song. Varney sings it with such emotion. He actually does sing other songs and has a really nice singing voice as well. Is there anything that man couldn't do?
from the 1st time i saw this as a kid, this songs comes to mind & i start singing it, nearly every time i watch it rain.... *Sigh* i truly miss Jim's greatness. he was one of a kind.
i remember the good old days, watching all of Jim Varneys movies my favorite was Ernest scared stupid, and Ernest goes to jail, i see all the the movies, i feel bad for him in this one cause the kids are so mean to him, and he just kept on trying to get along with them, but then they hurt him, and he feels like he cant do anything
@mommytosnakes wow i didnt know that. kinda shocked me when i heard. but who knows i been in manila philippines since 1999 i returned to us back in 2007 so yeah kinda shocked when i searched his name.
@FSinWCR wow kk ty all for the input. i didnt realize that he had it. i wached it once and love this song. and im filipino. lol and ur wandering what is a filipino doing watching this. any who tyvm
This is actually a pretty touching song for an otherwise obnoxious movie. Jim Varney was obviously a very energetic and passionate actor, and it's a shame that Ernest is the only character he got to really demonstrate that with.
This is one of the most heartfelt songs I have ever heard in my entire life. And Jim's voice lends itself to it beautifully. Captures the mood perfectly. Thank you so much for posting this.
I am his biggest fan!!!! Do not comment saying you are the biggest fan because If you came to my house all you can see is Ernest Ernest Ernest!!!!!!!!!! He is my hero My Idol. If you comment about me thats ok I will come back I swear to god my speaker will be off no video and I will sing Gee, I'm Glad It's raining. Or any ernest song you can think of. Trust me I swear to god that I'm his biggest fan ever!!!! Love You Jim Varney (A.K.A. Ernest P. Worrell) R.I.P 1949-2000. you are alive today.

Cheers.
