I dont personally think its about weed. However just to play devils advocate, Louis Armstrong was a lifetime weed (gage) smoker and even has a song about it! For those that don't know "Muggles" is the name of the song and can be found here on youtube. Apologies if this has been covered already.
This song is pure art therefor open to interpretation. Believe it means whatever you want it to mean. No one can tell you what to think, however believing our opinions about things are facts could be construed as a mental disorder... XP
really hates imposing political correctness on such a wonderful Sunday afternoon delight that Pops and Bing left to us, but did they have to give Armstrong the earthy, rustic chores and Crosby had the busy investments that would let him skip a few hours if he wanted to?
Smoking pot is nice, fishing is also nice. Smoking pot whilst fishing is fucking great but not essential, I'm about to go fishing in about 5 minutes. Without pot, but I'm still going to enjoy it. Lets be realistic here all you anti pot folks - fishing is just another excuse to do nothing for a few hrs, just like smoking. Chill the fuck out. blueblueblee is right.
Fantastic song. Nobody better at kibitzing throughout a tune than Bing....it's too bad nobody has YouTubed his collab w/ the Andrews Sisters & Dick Haymes, "Anything You Can Do" (which is as great as this one is).
It's a little sad to see so many 'clever' posters reduce Pops' incandescent artistry to "dude, he got high every day!- you know - like ME & my friends do!" Obviously, 'clever' or not, they've never gone fishing in their lives.
This was the song my family chose to play at my Grandad's funeral. It was and continues to be the most perfect song for him. He was an amicable countryman who spent as much time as possible salmon fishing. I miss him so much. This one is for you, Grandad xx
Genuinely can't see how 3 people can dislike this. I mean fair enough, if this isisnt people kinda music, then so be it, but cmon, nobody can listen to this and NOT smile! :D

This song was also played at my Dads funeral just over a month ago. He loved fishing, and this was definatly the song to suit him. I miss him so much, and more everyday- it really doesnt get easier. Im only 19....I havent graduated, got engaged, married or had children yet. So much he will miss out on. I love you so much Dad...Happy Birthday too <3 Always be your little pud xxxx
I hate it how music in my generation is never like that. I always hear stories from my dad and granddad how music was such an amazing experience in the past.
Now, it turned into something so ugly. From teens with a horrible voice, on the stage just because they are marketable. Where has that talent gone? If music is like this now, I really don't wanna imagine how music would be in my children's generation.
I'm 15 years old and my friends would never understand how much of a great song this is.. I only recently started listening to all kinds of songs from Louis Armstrong, I really like him. he had an amazing voice.. it makes me wish I was born during his time.. :)
Is it just me does this song sound like it got pot smoking undertones to it, well Louis sounds pretty mashed up...and he was a big time stoner also, that's a fact
obviously not every feel good song has to be about pot, and no stoner thinks that, but alot of them were either inspired or related to drugs in some way, well the best ones were
@rockhardxx2195 Remember that pot being illegal is a relatively recent occurence, and this song is from a time before those laws. Not saying it IS about smoking (it is not), but you are obviously projecting your anger from something else. i.e. "Did it ever occur to you that people can be happy without doing drugs?" Smoking a little pot for fun and "knowing no other form of happiness without the assistance of a controlled substance" is a huge stretch you fuckin psycho.
@oaklandmentality LOL. To begin -- where are you getting your information from that "pot being illegal is a relatively recent occurrence"? This song was recorded 1951, pot began being regulated in the 1930s. Therefore it is not from a time before those laws. I assume you call me a "fuckin pyscho" because you disagree. Okay then. Moving on, people are refusing the song for its simplicity and looking for some deeper weed-related meaning. What I'm saying is, It's not about pot. Just enjoy the song.
@liasmeister This isn't about marijuana. It's about fishing. Hence the name "Gone Fishin'" and not "Gone smoking pot." Did it ever occur to you that people can be perfectly happy without marijuana or any other drugs?
Well, whatever the meaning behind the lyrics are. I prefer the literal meaning, I just find it more beautiful imagery. The two greats sitting at a bank, lines in the water and all...
Maybe it is about dope, maybe not. But the fact is Pops smoked Gage every day of his adult life: Dr. Gary Zucker, one of Armstrong's doctors, saw no evidence that it did him any harm." Armstrong told John Hammond, "It makes you feel good, man, makes you forget all the bad things that happen to a Negro. It makes you feel wanted, and when you're with another tea smoker, it makes you feel a special kinship."
mistergreenlee You are stupid! It's about going fishing and leaving your work undone. The hoe and a row half done. Duh you use a hoe in the garden! What is up with you pot heads thinking everything is about marijuana?
What is it with people's obsession with reading into lyrics? Why can't you simply enjoy the song for what it is, and not always be anxious to say things like "you know this song is really about X, don't you?".
This is a great song, and if you were ever interested in the philosophical side fishing and skivving off work, then you might learn to appreciate it. I love nothing more than to leave my work (my "hoe out in the sun") and head off for a few hours of relaxing fishing.
"there's your hoe out in the sun, left a row half done"
"you ain't got no ambition."
Keep in mind that this song was made back in the day when jazz musicians were well known for using marijuana----and its use was widely accepted in society.
Just because the song includes references to smoking pot does not mean it is necessarily about smoking pot. The fact that many classic musicians smoked doesn't justify the use of marijuana, except against an already poorly thought out stigma - in other words, it's a small victory. But marijuana is, or should be, unnecessary for creative output, and, on that token, a sober creative genius is more remarkable than a stoned creative genius simply for the fact that he uses no extra stimulation.
Bing was weird, though. Really he was. He did all those orange juice commercials w/ his family, twins and all. Weird he was. But he did do some good stuff w/ Bob Hope, so I have to cut him some slack.
My Dad Billy Barnfield died this morning aged 88 years old and I am gonna play this song at his funeral. He loved angling and went with his Father since the age of 5. He particularly loved this version with Bing and Louis. RIP. Your Loving Daughter Jayney x
