the 345 is the logest lasting and toughest v8 i have ever seen. i have a 1972 IH stepside 1/2 ton with a 345 and has 506,985 miles on it!!! thats half a milion miles and still runs, starts, even in the below temp.
these were designed as low rpm high torque truck engines. they are best to use at 3100 rpm or lower and geared low. This is the worst possible engine type to use as a blown high rpm motor. I have a 1976 IH loadstar 1600 truck and it has a 345 motor. its basically a tractor motor. Making it do this is strange, unusual, and a waste of a good truck motor. this video is what chevy engines are made to do with, not IH.
Those engines were DOGS and were ridiculously heavy.
From the factory, the 345 4 barrel (5.6 liter) V8 with dual exhaust made 150 SAE NET HP and 263 SAE NET FT-LBS of torque.
While MOST of the IH V8s did have high nickel content blocks and forged internals, they were designed strictly as truck engines - for longevity purposes.
These engines have LOUSY cylinder heads, incredibly inefficient chambers and very heavy rotating and reciprocating masses.
@harddrivin1le I don't know why the "dog" opinion, I've driven these 345s and 549s in trucks , scouts and pickups, and I've found these engines to be tuff and reliable!
DANG! That thing is a monster! I can't imagine driving it. I have enough trouble keeping locked up with just a propane kit on my stock 345 with a Q-jet. You must have to have 20" wide tires just to keep from peeling them off. :)
Sounds nice. Yes about the nickle content w/ forged internals. They are medium duty rated but in stock form are slow/low revving & need mucho work to get where this one is. Just a proper balance job will make a world of differance though.
sounds like you might need to get the air/fuel mixture right, sounds like it leans out badly once the throttle is opened. maybe try changing the carbs and go for an injection system under the blower instead of ontop. that way the compressed air wont heat the fuel and mess up the mixture settings. trouble with the IH engine is that is was never designed to flow air or rev, if your after an easy performance option then try an engine swap for a MoPar440.
Wow, when i saw this listed i was shocked. I didnt think you could even get performance parts for these motors anymore let alone blower kits. The only thing i can say is throw it in a scout!
This motor will be at the Scout and Light truck nationals in Springfield Ohio on Sept 5-7. It will be in a black and white 79 Rallye. Hope to see you there.
I thought that was your motor. I was at the show & & recognized the square intake runners. I've seen the scout in years past(I go to Nationals every year). Was the motor rebuilt for this year?
It sounds beautiful! I'm being lulled to sleep. Hope to see some specs on the website by now and looking forward to the follow-up.
Thanks for ULing pics of the installed engine on the site. It'll be getting bookmarked JIC. That would probably sound sweet under the hood of an R series street rod. I can't imagine that much power in a 4WD, convertible station wagon. LOL, surely an easy 140mph... on 35s with the top off?
I have heard that IH motors had more nickel content in their blocks than most makes, so they are tougher than the average American V8 of the same period.
I don't know how it finally finished - this was the first test and it had another week of performance mods and upgrades after I shot the video. I'll look into it and post a follow up.
this makes me want to supercharge my IH 304
