  • I haven't been watching youtube that long but even in the 3 mths. I've been here there has been a complete change in venue for sure.

More shows of NBC, Fox etc. (or rather, trailers) are being shown as well as political videos. When I first came here there were mostly homespun videos which I found fascinating to watch. It was the reason I came back. :)

  • mmhmmm those are the videos I like too, and I have only been here a month or so and even I have noticed a change.

  • One thing to know: George Bush will not be running in '08, don't worry about that. But I'm rather offended that YouTube is leveraging their opinions here. It's bad enough people upload stolen content, but then that stolen content is featured, which is obviously a reflection of opinion.

I have a very strong political opinion, but I prefer not to make that my YouTube focus.

  • Oh, I hear you. That's right I forgot that he couldn't run, but that my point still stands really - it would seem this has become a very popular platform for special interst groups (political, corporate, etc.) that will drown out the voices of the real amateur. :/

  • Yep...I totally agree. The powerful have enough platforms, IMO. Oh, and if I didn't make it clear (which I realize I didn't) I liked what you said :-)

  • Hmm maybe, I thought the same thing until I saw 146 other videos on the subject that haven't been featured. But I hear ya, I suppose he has a pretty big voice where it counts.

  • Me either!

  • hehe *shrug*

  • *Sigh*, yes this may be an omen of things to come.

Still, people say this is better than tv, and it is. No commercials and we can just do a search on what we WANT to watch. Show me a cable company that lets you just dial up exactly what program you want to see right this minute.

So I guess you throw in some politics and...it's more like television after all. But still better :)

  • Very true. I think maybe I am just disappointed that hard work of some good amateurs will have an even harder time getting noticed.

  • Could be just one of those things or there could be a very real political decision to post said vid via YouTube. Politics is now becoming aware of the power of YouTube and yes we probably will see the Bush boy

as the featured Star attraction and when that happens, i'm off to Revver. Not that i care about Bush, i'm an Aussie but it's the principle of the thing. :)

  • Yep, ditto. Its hard enough as it is now to find real content through the morass of ads, movie trailers and porn.

  • When you upload a video and view it you will see a link at the side for Video Owner Options. You can also disable comments or set them to be added after you have approved them.

  • Thanks for answering this one for me, I was out most of the afternoon and I am not even sure I knew that answer :)

  • i agree with you eweforick

  • i agree with you eweforick

  • Do you mean you want to know how to disable ratings on your own videos?

  • Do which hon?

  • Yup, I can see when the election time comes around that we will be bombarded with political videos.. one party bashing the other party just to win votes and even YouTubers. Things will always get nasty and sometimes it can divide a nice community everytime politics are involved.

    ~FWz~

  • Yeah, thats what concerns me. That, and it will be so hard to easily find regular people's stuff if the volume gets too large.

  • Just giving my thoughts...I haven't watched the Kennedy video. I do subscribe to a political group on YT so that is where I would expect to see politicians. I would hate to see YT become an advertising haven for either party. According to YT the featured videos are chosen by users, but I have noticed that there is little additional info on the subject. Surely it can't be based just on ratings, otherwise the feature would always be from one of the top subscribed folks. Hmmmmm.

  • Hmmm...most views? most discussed? some combination of all the mosts? Maybe? Then we would have seen lonelygirl or geriatric 1927 more often. I admit I am stymied.

  • Since I have no control over what they feature, I personally don't get too bent out of shape over it. In fact, I rarely even look at the "featured" page.

  • Ordinarily I don't either but I was bored and had no new videos from people I subscribe to to watch hehe so I decied to go looking. This struck me a little odd for a feature.

  • Maybe Ted makes a contribution to YouTube for this service.

  • I think it could be the other way around, lol. I think YouTube is investing in Ted to push their issue.

  • Hmm scary either way. That takes me back to my question about what happens during a presidential election. Do we then see features of YouTube's candidate of choice or the one that pays them the most money? bleh.

  • Unfortunately thats how U.S. politics work. The ppl with the biggest budget get the air time. I hope it dosen't invade YouTube.

    Jello

  • Well it would seem it has :/

  • And, good lord, they are international, do we see it for every country's elections? Or does the US have sole proprietorship over the internet...I know Al Gore invented it...:P

  • Did you watch it? He is talking about the importance of net neutrality. It's not just for PPl from the U.S.A. he is talking about your access to the Net. If the net looses neutrality, your internet provider can make what ever site they like slower than nessary, or just block some sites that compete with there business. Really, this is a non- Political issue, it well affect the whole internet. They featured it because it will affect everyone who uses the Net!

    Jello

  • It's a good message, please don't let the messenger get in the way!

    Jello

  • Yep, I did watch it. And I do not at all debate the subject matter, but there are a 146 videos right this second on YouTube of varying levels of professionalism that discuss it. So if it is subject matter that is important why choose one that is part of an electoral campaign?

  • From what I've seen it seems that featured videos are chosen in a way that displays the wide variety of videos on here. I have no idea why renetto gets so many featured videos though.

  • That makes some sense, I guess. I wonder if this got classified as the best on its subject (cause its not the only one out there on net neutrality) or on its format (a political position video) or..?

  • Yeah, I have no issue with the use of the medium. Its smart actually especially given the topic, but a feature? I guess I just don't understand what makes a video selected for featuring.

  • I think what used to get a video featured and what gets one featured now is two different things. Originally it was ratings. Now it seems to be money. Most of the featured videos now are not the average users. And unfortunately that trend will continue to grow.

  • You're probably right there. But like you said in one of your videos, its better that YouTube makes their money that way rather than charging the users. As for ratings, there is far too much abuse of the system at the moment. Some people cheat their own ratings to get honors and some people only bother to rate a video if they don't like it (giving it 1 star) I don't take any notice of video ratings anymore and disable them on my own videos.

  • Yep, I hear you. I agree YouTube needs to find ways to support itself if it wishes to remain free (and I do wish that) but, maybe I am naive in thinking that the features were kind of a "Hall of Fame". I think that's why this struck an odd note with me.

  • I am so not copacetic that that. I think its okay that people use this vehicle for whatever ends they choose, I have the right to not watch, but I dunno this bugged me. And, its not my political alignment, I am more left than most of America's left, if that makes sense. If money = featured then, wow, this makes a lot of creative hard work by some very talented people here very empty.

  • Yes it does. Just like most things and I'm not making a pun, the little guy gets pushed out sooner or later. Unfortunately it will probably be sooner now.

  • Blah. I know what you mean, but it pains me to see a very powerful vehicle for raw, amateur talent turning into an easy soapbox for political hacks and advertisers. And, I never would have seen a pun, my friend, in my eyes you are ten feet tall.

  • Neither do i. It would not surprise me if we did see more of these type of vids when the election starts
