I've loved Luther's music for years (well around 25 tbh), and will continue to do so until the day I die!!! Whether you liked his music or not, you simply cannot deny his brilliant talent...
I thank God That he blessed us with all those who love him and share what he blessed them with thank you lord for this song and your child Mr. Luther Vandross
All I can say is WOW!!!, this is the first time I heard or saw this and I think it's off the CHAIN. the person who said he Lutherized is So right on, I totally LOVED IT thanks for posting it, It's still hurts that he's gone. He truly was one of the greates singers of this time.
Luther can sing and two of his session singer could too, Mr. Phil Blou and Kevin Owens. Those three brothers together, they made music. I mean real mucic.
Hold on. Let's get something straight. Whether Luther is gay.. made a gay face.. is or is not the original singer ... is TOTALLY IMMATERIAL !!! If Sam or Otis could rise from the dead, they'd both be on their feet cheering Luther's performance. There is NOTHING that Luther has ever sung that he hasn't totally made his own. You have to be deaf and dumb not to acknowledge that. The man slays anything he sings, whether it's an original or a cover.. and he "Lutherizes" it. Few can hang with him.
A gay WHITE man that also slays this song is Adam Lambert! He sings it for the oppressed gay people. Look up the live version of it on Season 8, American Idol. He NAILS IT! A great song is a great song and when sung by a great singer..they should ALL be appreciated as unique! Love Cooke, Luther, Smokey, Withers, Wilson etc..but also LOVE me some Adam Lambert.NOH8! :D <333
No one will ever out sing Sam Cooke on this song or any other-with all due respect to all the great singers that have tackled this great song. Sam was the best singer that ever lived.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I still think that David Brown's AI Season 4 audition is one of the best I have ever heard of this song.
This is Sam Cooke's song and he said out of his own mouth that Otis Redding's version is the best version of it he's ever heard. I love Sam's version but I'd agree with him. Otis' version just has soooo much feeling and pain in it. Hands down the best.
@cvmIII RUBBISH ! Otis Redding, R.kelly , Arethre Franklin, Billy Preston, Seal, and the list goes on, don't even come close to singing this song like Sam Cooke. Get outta here with that lol
@mrcjrowe I don't know about R. Kelly, Billy Preston's or Aretha's versions but Otis did damage on this song! After he did it -although I love the Sam Cooke version- they should've thrown the damn lyrics in the incinerator!
Okay, I had to listen to again, just for your sake. I'm sorry, I'm not feeling it. Not Luther's best and I love Luther to death. I was not feeling the soul. His diction was too correct, the extra lyrics added nothing to it, I've heard him sing better and I've heard this song better sung as well.
@cvmIII It is Sam Cooke's song. That being said. I had not heard it by Otis Redding's version, which I really liked, agree he does put so much passion and pain in his version. But I would be remiss if I didn;t say In my opion Luther Vandross OWNS this song when he sings it'

@silverchris9 His facial expression was gay?? What the hell, dude?? he made a face so it meant he had sugar uhhhh okay. I'mma need u take some gender studies courses and see if it doesn't help bring u to average intelligence.
@silverchris9 For someone who points to gender studies I am frightened by your level of IMMATURITY. Whether or not his facial expressions denotes 'femininity', that in NO WAY takes from his brilliance. An educated person in the field of gender studies would be too aware to find 1:48 comical. You are simply someone who is YET to understand the complexity of Human Beings. I am certain you don't find women with masculine characteristics comical...Such hypocrisy!
OMG!!! I Miss Luther. He sang the hell out of this song! God, I miss his music. God I miss his voice. God I miss how he can take a song and make it his own! Rest in peace, my brother.

Sam's version is heart wrenching. As far as all-time great singers...darn you'd really have to flip a coin between Sam and Luther. It would come down to personal likes. I'm a bit impartial to Sam, but Luther was right there. Also, remember Sam was only in his mid 30's when he passed, so Luther has a bit of experience PLUS he had Sam to learn from as far as vocals, pitch, and style. But again, it's a toss up. They are definately 1-2 without a close 3rd. You can pick Marvin, G. Austin too,
@mreman2 Agree with your criticism. Sam made it powerful and spiritual all the way up to the heavens, but Luther just made the song sound "pretty." eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhueeeeehhhhhhhhyeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, mmammamamammamamammamamammamammamamammamammamamammamamamam....
