I bought this as my first trainer. I did some modifications right away to make it fly like a trainer.
-I switched to a 3s 1000mah battery. (it weighs 100g less than the NiMH that's provided)
I also decided to stop using an ESC meant for NiMH on a Lipo so I'm currently working on a brushless conversion. So, all in all I'll have 180W of power with a total of 140g in mass reduction.
IThe model is too heavy and underpowered. I have crashed it due to the ESC cutting the motor at full throttle. I have to keep the throttle trim tab almost all the way down to keep the engine from cutting off on a bench test. I haven't tested it in the air yet. 48 years old been flying for 30 years. Not for the beginner. Has potential if the company would make a few simple design changes: LIPO for lighter wing load, brushless, bigger prop. 200.00 it's a bit high for this low quality. So close.
Hate to leave a negative sounding comment, but those looking at this plane should check out the Art-Tech version. It's 2.4Ghz, Brushless, has a 20amp ESC, 3 cell Lipo battery, a 40" wingspan, is 4 channels and has more scale details. Better all around.
Have one, ESC is too weak kept blowing out on me on take off, the brushed motor is underpowered.
The radio is good though still using it on home made planes.
If you get this cub, I recommend upgrading to a 1000 KV brush less motor, a 30 amp ESC and also double checking the aileron cuts before flying (The ailerons are very stiff out of the box, one side didnt move at all.
Do that before you even think of flying this plane. or it will not make it passed 6 feet off the ground.
it can take off but you have to move the push rod on the elevator by just one up...i but 2 one i adjusted and the other one i change out the motor and put a 7 tigre engine it went up to about 6 ft so i changed it and put a electric motor 28/26 kms motor with it it gave me about 60 OZ. of thrust!? i had my dad clocked it...it went 24 mph!!!
when i first got this plane we went to go fly it but the plane would not come off the ground so it kept going and hit a dumpster and broke the wings in half......
this plane pulled to the right no matter how much I set the aleirons and rudder trim
when i did get it to lift off the ground the motor cut out after 4 seconds of full throttle 4 seconds of full throttle and the motor safty kept triping!
It made it a full 6 feet off the ground when motor cut out nose heavy it went down nose first and trashed the nose foam
motor battery should not be used on anything else would have been cheaper to buy a nicer radio then invest in this peice of junk!
Sounds like you got a dud. Ive got one and it flys great! Sorta like my friend who bought a busy bee that everyone was saying was the best trainer ever but it was underpowered and tail heavy and control surfaces were sloppy. Its to bad you got a bad one!
@ratdoghippy next time, try stress testing the motor on the ground. that way if it dies, the hobby shop will be more likely to take it back than if you brought in a wreck and demanded your money back. the first battery charge should go to nothing but ground stress tests.
not sure bout the comparison,, the HZ cub is only 3 channel, but,, an absolute wicked trainer plain, even my mrs can fly it,,, well saying that - check my vids - my mate crashes it with onboard cam,, but the other vids show how a normal person can fly it - very high!!!!
@sandeepnij I dont know, not all pipper cub planes are alike, the main difference I found is in wing design (for better lift you want a good curve) and control surface functionality. You need the control surface to move easily, freely, evenly, and equally, if one does not move like the other the plane will not fly right.
i have this exact plane and have flow it many times, but i have yet to land it properly, it's harder than it looks. best to fly in a field with tall grass and have someone throw it for you, thats what i did and yes i crashed the first time but i got it in the air the second or third.....or fourth time!?....frusterating but don't worry about getting parts you can probably rebuild the plane with all the parts you can get
yeh but its 4ch, best off getting a 3 channel plane, or one of those elevon planes, taht act as aileron and elevator, those ones are real great for begginers.
I have this plane, it flys great. Ive had lots of crashes, and its still in great condition. As my first plane, its great for a begginer. Thanks flyzone. Oh, and if your getting this plane buy lots of spare propellers, i have 8. :)
Exactly I have built planes from mikeysRC sad to say i tried to use the motor and battery from the piper j cup on the mikeyrc spitfire, wouldnt lift it higher then 6 inches, But the foam board spitfire wanted to fly and stayed streight and center! To bad the motor cut out at full throttle again!
New parts now when weather clears up ill fly it for sure1
I am on the second motor for my J-3 Cub and it cuts out also. What is up with that? Sounds like a generic flaw. I also found the instructions to be often incorrect and not worded carefully.
@kfsipdog The ESC is 10 amp it can not handle full throttle of the "BRUSHED MOTOR"
Full throttle of the underpowered motor pulls 15 amps at full throttle the ESC is actually designed to cut out to protect the parts, however it also crashes the plane.
I dont recommend this plane everything I read here happened to me, cut out during take off, the ailerons didn't work, after 2 crashes and some upgrades it flew, but hell I could have purchased a nicer plane for the money I spent on this one.
I have this plane, I have flown it many times but i think i only landed it right once. I had to replace the motorshaft 3 times. I need to work on landing!
How much does it weigh, & what size motor is in it? If it's anything (weight-wise) like the Hobbyzone Cessna AKA: "Sky Pilot" then I'm not interested.
broke the wings on my first flight. I should have practiced. Now that my girlfriend purchased the G4 simulator for me, I must say that I have improved.....all i need are a pair of wings and new motor.
can't wait to get one

Is the body made out of foam or some other kind of plastic like the sky fly?
bignitro50 2 years ago
Mostly foam. The firewall, wing struts and empennage fixture are plastic.
