  • @Blakmajik78 ~ Yeah, she was great, but there is no GREATEST among the really great. If there was, it WOULDN'T be her, though.

  • Whitney truly was an amazing talent... gone to soon. You will be missed.

  • Excellent!

  • I broke in tears today. I just realized that a modern LEGEND, TALENT, and ULTIMATE SONGSTRESS has left us. RIP Whitney, thank you for your talent, and you are now under God's grace for eternity.

  • The original is the best which was sung by Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson.

  • Adeus Whitney :( Descansa em Paz, a tua música ficará para sempre .

  • rest in peace Whitney Houston , we will always love you .

  • just shed tears when i heard about the news that my diva had just passed away..., i come to grow along with her song's. so sad that she will never sing songs that i come to love as i grow up!! i will miss you ms. whitney houston!! you will forever be loved!!

  • Whitney you will always be my one and only Diva....listening to your songs helped me through many a sad and difficult time in my life.....At peace at last.....RIP

  • From 3:47 : that part alone is what make me think Whitney just had a God-given gift. Thelma has a great voice, but then you hear Whitney...& you realize there are a lot of good & even great voices, but truly one-of-a-kind magnificent voices - those are once in a lifetime,& she had one. Just that one part of this song to me represents what she had - she just busts loose with her own take on the line, & her voice is so crystal-clear & strong & laser-sharp - it's just phenomenal. Such a talent.

  • Boy. When 2 incredible voices (Whitney and Cissy) come together for a tearjerker song like this, there won't be a dry eye ANYWHERE!

  • The angels will be sound amazing now with her voice RIP Whitney

  • always my favorite track on "WHITNEY" 1987 album...and still is in 2012~

  • @supremes1964

Totally agree. Such a waste of wonderful talent.

  • @TheClampetts s excuse you "she was not a waste get it rig

ht she was a angel with a gift you'll never know.........TRUE TALENT'' if it clapped you in your face.................

  • @johnsonceleenalyce her death and drug use is a waste of her god given talent. I clearly state she is a wonderful talent. Settle down dude.

  • rest in peace whitney.

  • rip whitney your legacy is truly amazing

  • my idole for eternity

  • played this over and over for years ... as the news is playing, I continually am feeling the shock of all of this. thee best female voice in my lifetime.

  • Voice of an angel RIP Whitney!

    ...

  • j'adore <3

  • Itsi want a Mariah Whitney version of this please eheh!

  • oh god i really love this...

  • Thanks Whitney for such a great songs.many more happy time i wish you!!!

  • @josvermoesen Ahh sweetie, this was not a digital perfect Whitney! This was the real Whitney with her mother in the 80's when her voice was at it's prime! Get your facts straight! Whitney will still sing better than the average singer today, it's in her genes, she comes from a history of singers!

  • @84heroes1 its her own version her mother cissy cant sing? haaaaaaaaaaaaah imagine

  • @bluediamond27y...try John Barrowman and Daniel Boys ;)

  • Whenever somone asks the question, "Name the best 3 female vocalist ever?" She is almost always one of the names mentioned. Imagine what she would have done in the 10 years she was wastin'...:( Love her still though :)

  • They riff around too much, clouding the beautiful melody of this duet from the musical CHESS, but I still love this version. It was Whitney at the top of her game and the Mom who kept her out of trouble for years until she defected to Bobby Brown, and it all came apart. :-(

  • @sergeiparajanov They took the song in the direction of Gospel!!!!

  • i wish this song has a male version!

  • i too love this song***yes me d**its all good

  • i like this song....

  • which one of her albums is this part of?

  • stop with Elaine Page, she's a good singer but she can't be compared to the diva, the most beautiful voice all over the world Whitney

  • The duet with Elaine Page & Barbara Dickson of this song is my favorite. Although Whitney has an adorable voice and do a great version here aswell, of course.

The song is however written by ABBA Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Tim Rice, and from the musical Chess. A great song, no doubt!

  • Time is going to fast..... memories. <3

  • Great song! I know him so well, eventhough he thinks I don't.. he he.. lol.. luv the song.. thanks for uploading!

  • This is my favorite cause she is singing with her Momma! Cissy Houston!!

  • nothing can do this..... IT'S HER!!!!!

  • la voz de un angel!!!!!!!

  • if i get 75 thumbs up i will sing this song at my school in september

  • Streisand version is the best,,she owned the song :-)

  • Just saw the Broadway play "Chess" where this song comes from. Outstanding.

  • MY DEARLY BELOVED SISTER...FOR YOU THIS SONG! YOU KNOW THEM BOTH SO WELL !

  • Undepot...that's for u!

  • didn't know who the original singers of this song were until now. I think Page has a beautiful voice and did a great job, however the Whitney of the 80's coundn't be touched. Her anjelic voice was crisp and clear and whoever says she oversings or runs with the lyrics or whatever just don't get it. It's called soul, lol, sorta like when she did I Will Always Love You. Listen to dolly's version, then listen to hers. Case closed!

  • an absolutely stunning performance!!!! very classic!

  • this version was perfectly done

  • Whitney sings Björn&Benny!

  • Awesome song and amazing voice!!!!!

  • @kinotonberry dont be so stupid, as if they can compare with whitney.

  • @Micknrock WTF They were the ones who originally sang the song, and of course their version is better.

  • @Micknrock Elaine Paige is one of the premiere icons of musical theater, and her recordings and roles on stage are some of the most famous. There's a reason why her Chess duet with Barbara Dickson is still the top selling female duet in history. If you don't know who Elaine Paige is or her incredible singing and accolades, that's your problem. Feel free to do some research and educate yourself.

I love Whitney, but these ladies were the originals and they remain the best at it.

  • ;-) All time Emotion-Mover this Version!!!!

  • This song truly makes me cry! So damn moving!

  • Why does she waver with the notes like that? Sounds like an Ebonic version of a much better version in Elaine Paige! Whitney...don't even try to compete with a pro!

  • Поздрави!

Кристално чист,а за изпълнението нямам думи!

  • awsome song!Love it!

  • WOW! My second favorite version of this song. I, too, miss the Whitney that could sing. She so sad now, but back then, the was definitely, "THE VOICE" as she became known. As she said, "Crack is Whack" and it definitely "whacked" the shit out of her voice, unfortunately. Cissy is her mother, and her voice, in this recording, is better than Whitney's voice is now. Lets hope she stops embarrassing herself and decides not to tour again...

  • it´s now soon two years agao since i have stoped to play in a orkester. And when i hear this song i think back on my time in the orkestre and good times in life like holidays and freinds.

  • Damn I miss the Whitney that could sing.

  • I just adore her voice. She is a singer with one off the most sensuel sound.

  • i just hopped over and listened to elaine's and barbara's version. theirs is much better than the houstons'. at least whitney doesn't totally ruin this the way she does with most of her songs by screaming her brains out (except at the end)

  • @No1KCfan6 You clearly don't know the difference between belting and yelling....and she doesn't "totally ruin" her songs...what are you talking about? You just don't like songs with powerful belting...you are ignorant.

  • @gaylolful i like judy garland and she does a lot of belting. but she doesn't scream and do annoying gymnastics with her voice.

  • @No1KCfan6 "but she doesn't scream and do annoying gymnastics with her voice." Runs? Riffs? LOL....so now you don't like when people do runs and riffs???? WOW!!! This is funnier than I thought XD

  • @gaylolful keep laughing. laughter is the best medicine....for your mental instability :-p

  • @morlivino It really is a miracle how a squirrel can type. And I'm talking about you LOL

  • Whitney has the voice of an angel!

  • @FredONeil1 She is just amazing. I love Elaine Page but Whitney's voice is amazing. Sing on girl you can do it.

  • An amazing singer, but this song is so much about the combination of each part, for me anyway, which makes it sound amazing in the original version.. if only whitney would sing in the original style

  • Somehow I find this interpretation more appealing to me than the Paige's version. haha

  • whitney you are truly amazing.. a gift of making any song you sing sound so wonderful

  • wow fantastic! thanks for posting. Up to now never heard mother and daughter perform together. GREAT!

  • this is really good, but i have to say i like the Idina and Kerry version better and the Daniel and John one even more than that one. this is a close third, for me personally while it is sung beautifully, i can never have the same emotion as those that i have mentioned. Dont get me wrong, i love Whitney, but this doesn't punch me in the face with emotion like idina and kerry's or daniel and john' do.

  • @aardvarkofdoom as much as i love whitney, i have to agree. idina and kerry are outstanding.

  • @SodorMR i agree with you on the idina/kerry thing. they are both outstanding. but imo, Whitney puts a soulful voiceto this song, but still, Idina and kerry and daniel and john are the two best versions.

  • @Vyndettagirl wasn't it originally sung by Elaine Paige?

  • @petros1324 Yes it was (: and Barbara Dickinson (:

  • @PawsUpGaGa Dickson not dickinson

  • @PawsUpGaGa Dickson

  • I LOVE WHTNEY HOUSTON !!!!!!!! :D

  • I sang this song with my mahu friend beautiful song

  • I love this song and i prefer only with whitney, she is the best of all. For you Nei.

  • I love this song for my beloved boy friend!!! mwah love you dad!!!!!

  • Now I know where whitney gets her singing technique from..her mother!! Very nice

  • The best version ever, Gives me comfort and sadness at the same time everytime I hear this song .It is so meaningful that it makes me fall in love over and over again to the same man. Only time can tell if I ever love someone the way I had love him bec to this date, I am still madly in love with him and I know I will never forget him.

  • nkkalungkot nmn to.. its my mom's favorite,,,at nakarelate ako s kantang to,, i love someone who could never be mine,,, everyday i see him at law school, w';re seatmates,,he's the reason i stay late at night reading my law books because i dont wanna flank in class recitations,,jaz seing him sitting right beside me completes my day,,life is so unfair,,he's a married man,, i wanna scream out loud.. i wana cry my heart out,,,he could never be mine,, ;'(

  • This might sound silly, but i dont understand the deepest meaning of the song.. Can anybody help me please? thanks

  • @Vogue1306 Its a about a relationship that can never be, yet the little the man and the woman has shared (time, moments, chats) is enough for the woman to conclude that this is the man for her however she sets him free as she is not his only priority. Still there is a question of could she have done more, but the best part she has left of him, is how well she "knows" him.

  • I'd beg to differ @crez75 I know a version that as good as this one if not better. Look up the John Barrowman and Daniel Boys version. That one is AMAZING especially when it gets to the higher soprano notes ugh man does their blend really blend. They have a strong blend from the beginning but when it gets to the "Why am I falling apart?" the blend TRULY shows. I am talking about the John Barrowman and Daniel Boys version of course.

  • elaine paige and susan boyle true duet singer

  • @infitiny in ma opinion susan boyle is just a good singer but can't beat anyone who has a real musical or singing instruction

  • @hasibearli i agree! and what a song.. meant so much to learn about the song and the lyrics

  • @infitiny agree!!!

  • @infitiny it's True .... Paige and Susan or Barbara it's BEST VERSION

  • i really love this song and also the superstar diva ms. whitney houston...best ever version that i ever heared to my entire life..love it so much.

  • It was on Whitney Houston's " Whitney" LP/CD in the eighties. I worked in a music store and we played it quite a bit having many employees who loved it.

  • Im sorry but I like elaine pages version better. Whitney = great singer but her and especially the other singer have ruined this. Theyve gone up and down the scale and changed the tune too much in places. Not one of whitneys best songs in my eyes.

  • Just wondering why I can't share songs to my FB account, thanks

  • Je to nádhera ,mráz na zádech, slzy do očí, já víc už ani nemůžu, dík

  • Why are all these yanks squabbling about the different between Houston and Streisand?!?! Please show respect for the ORIGINAL! Elaine and Barbara - a worldwide number one hit everywhere, but, guess what, the US!! LOL

  • @DistantCousin

I just heard the other version when I was searching for this one. I liked it. Each version is good. There is a promotional Chess video of this song on youtube.

  • I love how they adlib and change the key from "why am I falling apart" apart onwards. It's thrilling, and brings the song to a different dimension you wouldn't get in a musical theatre rendition. A very worthy version, nothing can touch the original though, but almost as good.

  • Hey Modonna65 thanks for the info!

  • I just listened to the Barbra Streisand version of this... does any one know if that version is available on CD? Thanks!

  • @MrScottMadison You can find the Streisand version on her "Just For The Record" cd.. I hope this helps. -M

  • @MrScottMadison ...it was never released as a single...Its included as part of the 4 disc collection JUST for THE RECORD..it was suppose to be in the Broadway album but she felt it was too jazzy beat, so it was never included...

  • Whitney turns every song she performs, into an opera! she has one of the 4 or 5 best female voices ever be heard ! Barbara Streisand has a wonerful voice , but her version of this song seems like she's having her music class... ! i think that it's not easy to compare Whitney's performance with any other's singer !

  • beautiful..i'm a fan of whitney, elaine page and also barbra streisand and i must say that they all did a wonderful job with this song..you can't compare them, they're all amazing in their own way.

  • @Alfie17 I must agree with stewwalk, Whitney's voice takes this song to another level. It's all about people's personal preference, but at the same time, Whitney adds something extra with that voice of hers.

  • Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson do this better, though this is pretty amazing

  • I understand Barbara Streisand is iconic, but I have honestly heard little kids sing better than her. Her voice is totally broadway. She IS NOT a dynamic singer. People who grew up on her are totally biased. Whitney has one of the best voices this century. White, Black, and yellow say that. No one says that about Barbara Streisand. Versatile yes, but Barbara cant OUTSING whitney yesterday, today or tomorrow. This version buries Barbara version into the earth. PERIOD.

  • @stewwalk Whitney oversings everthing and doesn't connect with the words. I'll stick with Streisand's version. But to each his own.

  • @billyboylb Babs is just simply the best ever

  • @stewwalk AMEN..I TOTALLY AGREE!

  • @stewwalk Barbra streisand and Whitney Houston sing in different styles. Whitney is more of a Gospel singer - which is the sound of today. Barbra comes from a more Broadway, classic-pop style. She's more like Judy Garland or Sinatra. If you prefer a more Gospel based sound of course you'll prefer Whitney but don't knock Streisand. She's better at acting the lyrics and Whitney's better at vocal gymnastics.

  • @filmmekker Probably the best reply Ive heard yet.....No one is saying that Streisand doesnt do the song justice. Even though I dont go ga-ga over Streisand like some do, I know her place in music and film history. Again iconic. Based on pure ability shes not on my list. But a song isnt ALL singing ability. You tell that easily from many of the artists today. Many have great stage presence and just that "something", but are average vocally.

  • @filmmekker Also, Gospel has ALWAYS been the sound in the modern era. From gospel, to soul, to R&B. Most music in the modern era contains at least a pinch of gospel style. Content certainly not, but style most def. But again to each his own. Streisand is not my cup of tea personally, but denying her body of work would be foolish. In terms of overall iconicity Whitney is not even on the same page as Barbara. As far as THIS song goes, i personally think this duet is just better.

  • @stewwalk Elements of gospel have always been around but until 40 or 50 years ago, if a singer didn't sound "white" they didn't have popular success. Even black singers, like Ella Fitzgerald or Nat King Cole, had a whiter or more European sound.

Now it's the opposite. Even white singers have to sound "black" or gospel derived singing with all the runs, over-emoting and melisma.

  • @filmmekker Agreed...Very Interesting Dynamic though..Many songs that were sung by blacks were often re-done by whites with greater success. Interesting how they kept some elements, changed others, put a "white" sound on it and it was a bigger hit than the original. Seems like we have come full circle.

  • @stewwalk She IS NOT a dynamic singer. (kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk) - It is not worth discussing -just makes me laugh.

  • Could not touch or come near Barbra Streisands version!

That is the song to listen to, hands down!

  • so touching...words of wisdom from a mother...i love it!!

  • One of the best singers of all time. If only I have the same voice.... hehhehe.... yeah, i wish... :)

  • Nice...Whitney when her voice was perfection....god i miss her as an actress.....amazing in The BodyGuard

  • @zaborwi yeah she was awesome she should do more acting

  • this is my favorite song and whitney houston your the best singer.ur the best here in the philippines.
