Gone with the wind > Casablanca. Because Casablanca is a total chick flick and it's somehow boring yet this movie is more than twice as long than Casablanca but more exciting. Now Gone with the Wind isn't the best movie ever in my opinion I do have some complaints. However, it's still a great/awesome movie.
@LukeLovesRose Including a film that was, at the time, only one year old was mighty accepting of the AFI, especially when you consider how many films were likely overlooked in order to include James Cameron's quasi-epic.
As for why Gone with the Wind ranks much higher, consider the fact that many consider it the first truly great film ever made, and not simply great for its time.
@FreedInsanity I think Gone With the Wind was probably the second truly great film, right after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released two years earlier.
I myself would have put Gone With the Wind in the top five, and taken Titanic off the list. Titanic isn't a bad film, but it doesn't belong on a list that includes A Streetcar Named Desire, Pulp Fiction, Schindler's List, and Star Wars.
Piss on Raging Bull and The Godfather. This movie is still gorgeous and amazing after 70 fucking years. That's more amazing than any wife-abusive boxer or gangster family.
And Vivien Leigh's Scarlett is possibly the greatest character in film history. And IMO, she gave the greatest performance by an actress in film history as Scarlett.
I know you will give thumbs down, but I don't like this movie. Scarlett O'hara is hateful: every boy loves her, but she falls in love for the only one she can't have. Then, she get married three times (!), without love, and when Ashley is finally free, she finds out that she don't want him. I understand why Gone With the Wind is considered a great classic, but I do not agree.
Whoever Cameron Crowe is(?),to suggest that Vivien Leigh played second fiddle to Clark Gable is ABSURD>She is the central character in the film/novel.Gable was just playing Gable.Star he might have been, actor he a'int.Vivien was an English actress playing an American southerner, pretty darn well.which is of course why she was given the Academy Award and not him...!
The gowns created for Vivien Leigh for this film are in danger and need urgent restoration work. They are stored at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin. Queries about how to help fund the resoration can be directed there. Donations as low as $10 are welcome to raise the $30,000 needed for the restoration project.
I wish I could have grown up in a different time back when movies like these ( instant classics) came out and life was so different. Yes, the Dark Knight is a favorite of mine (due to Heath Ledger) but nothing can compete to the beautiful and tragic story lines of the early 20th century.
Gone With The Wind is one of the greatest movies ever made. I love the part in which the handsome Rhett Butler leaves his whining ex wife Scarlett O'Hara and says.. "Frankly my dear I don't give a Damn." And i was so disapointed that Neither Clark Gable & Olivia DeHaviland won oscars for this movie. After all both winners Vivien Leigh went on with her successful career until her death in 1967 and Hattie McDaniel she was totally forgotten and never had the same success as Ms.Leigh's had.
@CloudsofBliss stop acting like such a fucking tool. if you don't watch this movie every time it's not, it means its not a good movie. i try to watch the entire dark knight every time its on. the story, acting, and CGI are incredible. heath ledger > the guy in this fail flick
@CloudsofBliss originality doesn't have to make a movie good. there are other elements involved which are lacking from gone with the wind. hell, the whole genre is pretty laughable and would scare off most people except "critics" that have to pick the most unheard of movie in an attempt to appear "unique"
@AllYourBase420 ...You need to take the blinders off...there isnt an actor today that can hold a candle to any of the actors in the heyday of film...think about this...special effects and overall film work today can make a dead person into a star...the actors such as Gable,Tracy,Bogart,Hepburn, and any you want to name had to really act..they didnt get to rely on special effects and other such things....Streep,Nicholson,Pacino and a few others can act.. all others are nothing but amateurs
yeah you keep telling yourself that. special affects doesn't make a bad actor good. see: ben affleck's career. i'll also see your list and raise you: gary oldman, DDL, edward norton, dicaprio, and chris walken. these actors are much more lovable because they have variety and depth as opposed to those actors that acted in the same drama/romance flick rehashed til the 60s.
LOL. Yes, everyone who has seen this film gets pissed at Scarlett at least once. But, no one can take their eyes off her. No one can be any less than amazed by her charm, beauty, audacity, and fire. She is a pain in the ass, a bitch, a slut, but she is still a great symbol of strength that no character in film history has ever been able to touch.

Some were. It was just cheapest to make a black and white film, i guess. But lots of movies prev. 1950 were in colour like Nothing Sacred (1937), The wizard of oz (1939), Meet me in st louis (1944)... :)
They also didn't make films with color because they believed that color ruined the seriousness of some scenes. They though color made film look gauzy.
Are u serious? It's an historically accurate depiction of the times. Except for the scene when Scarlett slaps Prissy for lying to her (And she would have slapped anyone at the point--black or white) I don't see any mistreatment of blacks. They are simply portrayed accurately for the times. And I LOVED how Mammy was a real part of the family.
"It's an historically accurate depiction of the times." LOL. That's a comment so incredibly ignorant it's incredibly anyone in the 21st century could possibly make it. You don't see any mistreatment of blacks in the movie? Of course you don't! That's why it's a white supremacist film and a complete fantasy. The overwhelming majority did not. It's interesting that in your warped mind being opposed to slavery and positive depictions of the genocidal southern slavocracy is considered "politically correct." Read Frederick Douglass if you're interested in what slavery was like. Not a 1930's white supremacist Hollywood production based on a racist novel.
Who do you think you are, calling me warped? You don't know me! I merely disagreed that the film is white supremacist-- and refuse to back down on my opinion. I never said I agreed with slavery--but I'm not about to hide behind the current PC attitudes that vilify a classic movie--that really was a love story and not an attack on a race. Maybe I will read Douglass' book. But I doubt it will convince me this is KKK propaganda.

at 00:41 cameron crowe say clarke was the important part cos vivian got all the fun does that make sense?! cos it don'nt to me. as far as i'm concerned vivian STOLE this movie!
The film should be number #4 1. Citizen Kane 2. Raging Bull 3. The Godfather 4. Gone with the Wind 5. Casablanca 6. Schindler's List 7. Lawrence of Arabia 8. Vertigo 9. The Wizard of Oz 10. City Lights 11. The Searchers 12. 2001: A Space Odyssey 13. Star Wars 14. Psycho 15. The Graduate
I really like Casablanca especially Ingrid Bergman i think she and Bogart did a wonderful job together, but this movie gathered everything, the fun,the seriousness, tears and love. All the ingredient were present to make it the best.
Gone with the wind > Casablanca. Because Casablanca is a total chick flick and it's somehow boring yet this movie is more than twice as long than Casablanca but more exciting. I love the scene where Rhett Strolling with "Bonnie Blue" runs into Mrs. Merriwether,
played by the great Jane Darwell, Rhett enquires about what he should do to keep
Bonnie from sucking her thumb. Mrs Merriwether replies, "Put some quinine on it, and
she'll stop suck'in it!". I'm related to a family of thirteen cousins who grew up in
Darwells' delapidated "Cold Water Canyon" Mansion/House!

I'm still astonished to think that Olivia De Havilland as well as Ann Rutherford are
still living! And De Havillands' sister Joan Fontain, who starred in MGMs'1939 production of "The Women", is living as well!

This movie is so underated (especially on IMDb)!! I don't think it is the greatest movie of all time, but it should definitely be in the top 3.
1. The Godfather
2. Citizen Kane
3. Gone with the Wind

Gone With The Wind was number 2 on part 2 of the special then the Wizard of Oz was number 1
This however is the 1st countdown of the AFI special with Morgan Freeman hosting. In the 2nd countdown Ben Stein is hosting.

I really like Casablanca especially Ingrid Bergman i think she and Bogart did a wonderful job together, but this movie gathered everything, the fun,the seriousness, tears and love. All the ingredient were present to make it the best.
