  • This is real.

For a single moment, the wind was in resonance with the bridge. The odds of this happening are slim to none, but it happened.

  • @starwars778083 Aeroelastic flutter? no?

  • @jkennedy561 Pretty much. I'm sure it's happened more than once. This is great footage though.

  • Standing torsional waves. I saw this film in undergrad physics.

  • the guy on the bridge was the designer. he later committed suicide, knowing he would never work again.

  • @fcmsinger I heard that he actually tried to save the dog (that's why he was the last to get off the bridge) but when dogs are panicked they get rather vicious out of fear, so he had attempted to carry him but the dog probably would've attacked. Poor puppy. :(

  • Is this voice from not to be seen?

  • Fake !

  • Estou aqui pelo Tecmundo, e você?

  • There it go! And then the bridges falls.

  • putz, essas imagens são Reais? a ponte balançou assim mesmo? O.o

  • Final Destination - 1940

  • those idiots, they made a bridge out of rubber!

  • Are the pieces of the bridge still down there... in the river?

  • THE REASON IT COLLAPSED:

The wind blowing on the wires caused them to vibrate like a guitar string, the tone (frequency) matched the frequency of the bridge and cause what is known as a standing wave. The same as sound breaking a wine glass,,,

THAT is what caused this bridge to collapse. A 40 mile an hour wind itself could not move cemment and steal like that. A wine glass will not break in a 40 mile an hour wind, but with a tone that matches the frequency of the glass, it will...

  • @Drewliud You are so wrong. The bridge collapsed because there was no air passage between the concrect, in definition, "the bridge was too much solid".

  • @EdgarFroez I am not wrong, I know for sure, that the bridge was not too solid, lol, just look at how much it is bending, I know for sure it was a standing wave. Did you know that because of this phenomena that soldiers to this day are NOT allowed to march across bridges, they have to walk, because the stamping of feet by many on a bridge has also caused a standing wave on bridge that collapsed just like this one. IT IS FACT.

  • @EdgarFroez It is a simple scientific principal, everything is made of frequency, the vibration on the wires at a rate that matched the frequency of the bridge. If you go back in the bible you will read about the walls of Jerico crumbling from the sound of many horns, it was he same principle. The coral castle was build with stone that weighed tons and lifted and moved into place with the same principal... look to the past, the ancients used this knowledge extensively.

  • This was my life today!!!

  • Yes, it is the original newsreel. I can't believe that dude left his dog to die! Could he have carried the dog?

  • HA HA! HE SAID THE BRIDGE WAS GYRATING. IF YOU SAY "GALLOPING" AND "GYRATING" TODAY IT HAS PORNOGRAPHIC OVERTONES.

  • i saw this on Modern Marvels: engineering disasters...i love the history channel

  • I've seen clips of that many times before (I think one of the times was from Muppet babies), but I never knew where that was from. I was just reading an article on Yahoo about 5 shocking architectural failures and it showed this bridge, so I had to come look for the clip on it.

  • Wow, that bridge sucked

  • This is freakin scary!!!!

  • Who here came from @fivethirtyeight?

  • @Naphtalik funny!

  • I blame Krazy Glue.

  • hehe...girder...

  • We need modern news with soundtracks like this.

  • Why aren't the news anchors of today as exciting as this guy?

  • It's weird how everyone's voice sounded the same in the 30's-40's.

  • @DXMan2330 The voices sounding the same was more to do with the audio equipment. On the radio here they did a brief broadcast with the microphone used during the kings speech in 1934 and the effect was startling.

  • The reason people panic nowadays, is because they have become fuckin’ sissies and pussies. And the fearmongering media machine fuels that fire like nothing else.

American dream: Bold heroes who fear nothing:

American reality: Land of the sissies and pussies.

    (Sorry, but it’s true.)

  • NEEDS MOAR DUBSTEP AND MINECRAFT BLOCKINESS! ;)

  • It's the dubstep bridge

  • Does this remind anyone else of Shadow of the Colossus?

  • Drawn Together.

  • this suddenly makes my like physics class for some reason.

  • i love how if this happend now a days people would make a big fuss out of it, but back then, they talked about it like it was a movie, and the people who were "running" from it, didnt even looked like they gave a danm

  • Must be the same people that designed Boston's Big Dig

  • these people are so calm.

    RIP tubby D': ♥♥

  • okay lemme get this straight...The people in this video just calmly walk off the bridge without any panic whatsoever...Please tell me i

m not the only one who'd yell and scream and run off the bridge screaming: OMFG WTF HELP MEEEEEEE WTF IS HAPPEING NOOOO!!!!!! o_o

  • the stupid ass dog wanted to die

  • TUBBY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

  • well that was a complete fail of making it epic, the motorist didn't even run off the bridge

  • I think I saw this bridge on Bill Nye the Science Guy.

  • This is older than Hugh Hefner's balls.

  • OMG..........................Facts

  • RIP Tubby, the 3 legged dog.

  • @FarfetchdForDinner Omfgfacts

  • @Arsjonisteman Oh awesome, I'm highest rated ;D

  • I wish the news was this badass today.

  • Why's the last guy walking? I'd sprint like hell.

  • @toavama1

People in old days had balls. lol

  • i love the epic voice :P but its weird how its always the same for every old movie :S

  • @TheUltimateScripts All those guys graduated from a particular school that taught them how to narrate newsreels in a pretty rigid way. Seriously, guys from everywhere in the US took the same class and they all came out of it sounding interchangeable because that's what they were expected to sound like. We have out own ideas about gravitas nowadays but back then you wouldn't have been taken seriously if you didn't sound right.

  • @TheUltimateScripts My dad said that it really happened too. I thought it was kinda rediculous looking but nope. Really did happen.

  • U Jelly, bridge?

  • That poor dog. Rest in peace. <3

  • they showed some of this stuff on tv and the lone car, they guy got out of the car and left his dog on purpose just to get out of there, what a dick

  • @MegaDrainProductions

My great uncle was there when it happened and actually the dog wouldn't leave the car.

  • @odd1inak the dog was probably scared as living fuck, n thats why u pick up the dog even if its fat or not. although i cant do anything about it now

  • poor dog :-(

  • What is amazing is just how plastic concrete can be.

I wonder what kind of car that was?

  • Washington is a dumb state! Why the hell would anybody be stupid enought to build a bridge like that!?

  • Comment removed

  • @caspianb132

Naturally, the entire state of Washington is dumb because of the engineering failure of one bridge. The builders petitioned the federal government for more money to build wider, deeper girders, but it was a New York engineer who said the bridge could stand using narrower, shallower girders. So as usual, the West Coast got hosed because the interests on the East Coast thought spending more money on a bridge way out in "dumb Washington" was an unnecessary waste of money.

  • Hi-yo, Silver! It's the Lone Ranger!

  • :( aww... poor puppy... it's so sad that he died and wouldn't get off the bridge because of being so scared. I heard recently on the local news here in Washington State that they thought they found the remains of that car... I don't know if they ever figured out if it was that indeed or not.

  • i'm going to have nightmares about this DX

  • i just remember watching this in my history class, and for those of you who dont know, now theres 2 bridges, i mean it was just 1 bridge up till about 2 years ago

  • Accompanying music is priceless!!!

  • If only the news now a days was presented like this!

  • That's quite a video!

  • There was a dog in the car indeed and it was the only victim that day

  • @TheInsane89 Yea, I feel bad for the dog "Tubby" the cocker spaniel, whenever I hear about this bridge. They did go back and try to save him, but the dog was so frightened, it did not want to leave the car, and he was biting the man who tried to rescue him. Poor dog...RIP, Tubby...

  • I've seen this video, off and on, for decades. It is still hard to believe it is real.

  • i love how the camera man is impervious to anything that happens

  • wasent there a dog in that car?

  • this isnt the origanal news reel and the origanal one already had sound and it was much shorter

  • the man walking away car is professor farquason i am sorry i can't spell his name

  • Comment removed

  • is this the original newsreel?

  • Sorry, I really don't know - I suppose there were more than one, and this could be just one of them.

  • Thanks for telling me.

  • @LBfan0685 You know what's the worser bridge disaster The Tay Bridge Disaster That Happened in December 28th 1879 With the loss of 75 lives In dundee, scotland and I live in scotland
