Let the other apes kill and eat the two infants. Thanks what they deserve as they grow up to be killers. Look at how the others want to kill their infants. They just breed and kill, they are crazy mother fuckers that should be shot and infants sold as pets. Once the pets get to big to handle the should be sold into the medical business.
After reading some of the info available about Frodo, I guess it's lucky that this didn't end up being horrific, titled more along the lines of, "Wild alpha male ape meets his baby twin chimpanzees & kills & eats them." I *know* he's a chimp, this is nature, things like this happen, but I really expected better of Flo's grandson.
(And they're such cute tiny babies, with little starfish hands.... :-)
Frodo is the chimp that grabbed a baby from a woman and ate it. "By the time help arrived from the research team, Frodo had scrambled up a tree and was holding the limp form of the baby, which he had begun to eat. "
This is a serious subject and I dont know why people post silliness. I love chimpanzees and I think that its not only dangers from humans that a chimp mother has to worry about. Gremlin has had her babies killed before by other members of this group. Because she is not the highest ranking female she oftens get a bad time from the other chimps.
BBCWorldwide: "Alpha male chimpanzee, Frodo gets to meet the cute baby twin monkeys, which he is probably the father of. See more baby animals on BBC wildlife."
man, primitive ppl all over the world must think white folk are freakin weird, here come these ppl that actually live in a civilized developed place much much better than theirs and they show up wanting to go chase wild animals in the damn jungles....
@Kickagnome Infanticide has been seen among chimps. It is up to the alpha male whether they live or die (hence the submissive pose.) So, yes it is a hard moment for the mother.
Okay. So what does that have to do with the price of eggs in Russia? Maybe the ape should have passed around cigars in a delivery room? Not trying to be negative...but very opposed to anthropomorphism. It's just a simple ape, inspecting a newcomer. If it were determined non-group chimp, the adult would kill it without a thought.
Team: After taking a close look, I do not see testicles showing on the male animal. You may be observing the rear of the female. The female chimps sex organs are a disgusting sight to see (unless you are a male chimp). The pair of dangling scrotum-like parts are portions of the female's vagina, anus, urinary assembly. In season, the female's genitals swell to enormous size...ugly. I won't discuss further. Please.
Only a live chimpanzee can evoke mixed feelings of morbid interest, cold fear, and disgust. So, before I begin throwing up, let's just agree with your observation.
Funny comment! So, here's the scoop on huge chimp testicles: Because the ape is not monogomous, it cannot be certain which ape passes on its genes. So, enormous amounts of sperm are needed. The more sperm injected = greater chance of siring offspring. Most often, apes mount a fertile female in rapid succession, lasting no more than 9-10 pumps to ejaculate. If a male is not interested in a female, she may initiate contact, even placing the chimp penis into its own vagina. Gag! Enough said.
the twins received so much positive attention from Frodo, the other females probably felt like the twins were a threat to their "status" or positions in the group and so they tried to eliminate that threat by killing the twins. Chimps are very competative and are always fighting to keep as high up in the group as possible. The twins survived that attempt on their lives. There is a video showing them older on here, it's called "chimpanzee diary: chimp championship rivalry", I think.
The two females would probably try to steal the twins, most likely killing them in the process. But if successful this 'forced adoption' would probably lead to favor with the Alpha male.
I was trying to draw similarities between this society and certain human societies where polygamy is practiced ... Usually in societies where the male can marry and have offspring out of more than one female, the females tend to compete over resources for their children and be very aggressive towards the children of the other women with whom they share the male, not to the point of wanting to kill the other babies of course but hostilities occurs nonetheless.

I doubt if an ape could father twin "monkey's" as the tag says ;-). Chimpanzees are great apes, not monkeys.

There is a theory that the chimps created the Bloods & Crips to control power and by diverting attention away from themselves.

why are the female insisting on killing the twins? is it so that they gain the attention of the alpha male?

That's unlikely. Females never lack attentions.
Fifi and Fanny aren't the kind to try and eat other Chimps baies though it's been witnessed. Why do you say they wanted to kill them?
