The electronics on the Prius is what most cars will use in the near future, so people should get used to how to place the car in neutral. It was the first thing I did with my Prius. Like you say you have to leave it there a half second or so to disengage the engine. That poor cop with the floormat that stuck the accelerator to the floor. Had he known this simple procedure he and his family would still be alive. All cars have neutral too so it works for all cars. Thanks.
Thanks for putting the "nice guy" touch on my video. However, your forgot to tell them to take the bus if they could not figure it out, and you also did not say BYE! lol
People seem to forget that what caused Toyotas image crash, is a gaspedal made by an American company...
And for the people who crashed, maybe you should try to stop your car first, for example by putting it in neutral or by turning the ignition of, and then calling 911 instead the other way around...
Both ford and toyota are amazing companies. But buick SUCKS.. My cousins laccross' window wipers and rear seatbelt stopped working/broke at only 10,000 miles~ it could be bad luck, or just cheap products.
Toyota's are best people just hating, stupid faggets trying to hurt imports cuz their cars are fking awesome... domestic cars always wait till imports take the 1st step to create a bad ass car then domestic manufactuers try to make something better and then says its better cuz they use import ideas... fking faggets wat about the recalls with other brands?!... fking media... :)
In a standard automatic vehicle if you apply the brakes whilst accelerating the engine will work against stopping you, but it isn't mechanically possible to overcome the car's braking power unless your brakes are malfunctioning. Also, if you put the car into reverse under no throttle the vehicle will stall. However, under full throttle conditions you will damage your transmission and could even lose control of your car.
@buneaalexpetru I had a 2000 Hyundai Accent 5 Manual Transmission, and the car was a piece of garbage. It depends if it is automatic and manual transmission on some cars. For Manual Transmissions, it is probably better on automakers like VW, Audi, SABB, Honda, and Toyota. Manual Transmission in major cities are useless because we have heavy traffic, and are a pain in the butt when gearing up and down. The only advantage of 5 speeds is you can stop the car easier in close encounters.
@AudiABTr8 notice he says it is a second generation, and I think he said 2004. It makes sense to put the car into neutral...I have a 2007 Toyota Matrix, and I never had any problems. The only problems I have had is when I put my cruise control on, and then I try to speed it up using the cruise control which increases my throttle too much. I recommend applying the brake, and then speeding up using your accelerator, then set your cruise control at the desired speed.

Ya you do lose power steering, but even without it it's easy to steer when you're moving... don't know if it locks, but you have to turn it really far.
When you put it neutral the gas pedal is actually disconnected/reset so you don't even redline the engine.
@HWGuyEG yea my engine revs when i hold the gas pedal down and shift to neutral. but mines a bit older. so yea. also i didnt know the prius had a auto disconnect from teh gas pedal once switched to neutral. im not surprised tho. but the toyotas and what not that had a prob with teh gas pedal sticking dont have teh saftey feature. but then again if my pedal dosnt come back from teh floor my natural reaction is to pull the pedal up with my boot so yea lol
The overall conclusion is that the gentleman from California did have a defective accelerator that caused his vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. In a panic, the 52 year old male slams on the break and calls the police, while on the phone hes is too frightened and distracted with the rising panic to think of a logical method of solving the problem like putting the car in neutral or turning it off. @midengineZ06 If people are so stupid that they can't figure out how to stop when the accelerator is wide open maybe there should be a new evaluation for their driver license. It's not the cars that are bad it's the people driving them.
March 17, 9:03 p.m. - The NewYork Prius investigation preliminary results are in - and......brake is 0% accelerator pedal 99.9% - The local Sheriff has all the details and copies of the investigators evidence. He seems rather unimpressed that there is not more to the story according to witnesses of the investigation
Get with the program. Ford didn't take any of the bailout and they make some of the best cars around today. And there new cars have the highest reliability in the industry.
Works just fine as long as the computer works, but what happens if the computer glitches? Will the brake override the throttle?? Is it on a separate circuit?
@matrox brake will always override the throttle. if not computer wise, just performance wise. in repeated tests with multiple cars, trucks, and suvs, including toyota and other cars, they were taken to speeds of 65+ and with the throttle fully pressed the brake was applied. the braking distance only increased by a couple yards. only problem is your brakes will overheat if you keep doing that. this whole toyota thing is blown out of proportion by idiots
Dude NO SHIT?? if you cant handel car if the throtler gets stuck maybe you should give your license away. Just pointels video. No body cant be so fucking dum (well parently can what i have read news... )
Apparently, since the news has shown people stating that they can't stop or handle the car if the throttle gets stuck (people who are dumb according to you), then the video isn't pointless.
yep. I have notised that but stil. you should be able to handel car in proplem case. My sister did just fine when her throttle got stuck (not in toyota). She did have no proplem and this happended even in middel of city. Maybe driving licence is too easy to get...
xD so thats hard is to stop a prius! HAHAHA stupid americans! those who died because that gaspedal get stuck, they really deserved it.... they got their drivinglisence from cheerios breakfast box??
lol when the throttle got stuck is because people put all weather floor mats on their regular floor mats if you read instructions. They tell you to take off your old carpet floor mats before installing the new all weather floor mats. simple as that
In stead of bribing media to produce "everything's alright" videos like this, I would suggest Toyota to put that money into sorting out it's electronics once and for all.
if you can't use your brain stay away from the drivers seat seriously. how can you not think of putting the car into neutral i really dont understand this.
James Sikes, unsuccessful con-artist ... it's time to put another quarter into the "Fifteen Minutes of Fame Machine" Your time is just about up. The media really wanted your B.S. scheme to play out..... too bad you got busted.
I think Toyota really hurt there reputation by the stuck throttle problems. I hope they bounce back and get back to the old days where they made cars like the Supra.
Mo15084, the USA highway death were as high as 50,000 in the 1960-70's. With the development of antilock brakes, disc brakes, better tires, more predictible engine and transmission performance, better construction of passenger zone. Less people are getting killed. The latest from NTHSA is slightly over 30,000 death per year from drunks, reckless and neg drivers!
Accidents due to drunks, reckless and neglegent drivers have dropped over the year but according to NTHSA those numbers are still upwards of 30,000 death per year.
Where is the outrage 30,000 death per year from drunks, reckless and negligent drivers and you are offended by 5 death unexplained?
30,000 death per year "explained" as drunks, reckless and negligent ...and you are indignant about the 5 unexplained cases. Your insincerity on safety is transparent!
jgto17, you want to see this rare event? Let me illustrate how rare this event is, total number of unexplained sudden acceleration 20 over 4-5 years with less than 1000 total complains about non-related accelerations.
This year in USA Ave 73 people will die from lighting strikes and thousand will be injured by lighting. You will witness 10x people hit by lighting before you physically encounter one unintended sudden acceleration.
Thanks for proving everyone is a liar including the CHP officer who smelled burning brakes and the one who was killed in a runaway Lexus.
And of course the woman who testified to Congress lied too especially when she said she put it in all gears including neutral and the car did not stop.
I sure would like to know what this video really cost Toyota.
If course I will NEVER ride in any Toyota again because I don;t believe propaganda that spits in the face of reality.
Vanakatherock, So there is a software glitch in the computer for the transmission switch input. There is a completely separate input from the brake switch that disengage the engine if the brake is fully depressed.
Separate and redundant switch for transmission input and brake input, separate line of code for separate switch to turn off and disengage the engine without defeating power steering, power brakes!
Hydraulic system can be defeated on one side of the car and the redundant system will still stop. ABS system is redundant, Power Assist is redundant and Engine Over-ride is redundant and you still have cable emergency brakes!
Here's a couple ironic things about this mess... 1. toyota built the car, right? so any toyota mech. with knowledge of the car and the slightest amount of common sense can see where this problem resides and troubleshoot the problem. 2. All brakes are applied physically, but when a car is on, they are assisted hydraulically or electronically to take on the vehicle's full velocity... but if the Prius' brakes are entirely dependant on the computer someone's an idiot.
If it is a software glitch, which it is very possible, what happens if said glitch prevents you from shifting your computer controlled transmission shifter into neutral? Saying the computer doesn't recognize the command? What if said glitch doesn't recognize the command to activate the override when at WOT and the brakes are applied? The car isn't a desktop or laptop computer that you can just duplicate any problem at will. The car's ECU is a lot more complicated than that.
Toyota started having problems when Toyota was being built in the US. American products and vehicles are useless and cheap to began with. Like for example General Motors. Had tons of recalls in the past. Horrible manufacture. I'm not a toyota fan but I can clearly say that Toyota's are way better cars than most of the Domestics cars. They'll bounce back within a year and become 1st once again.
No, its a software issue plain and simple. Toyota doesn't want to admit it because that kind of recall would be extremely expensive to fix and hard to implement. Go buy a Ford before you bash American Cars. They make the best cars out there at the moment. Look at their stock performance in the last year.
Buy a Ford? I'll buy a Chevy instead of a Ford. they might be the best cars at the moment but Toyota been dominating for the past several years. Imports in general are dominating the us. People are realizing that imports are better in terms of performance and quality wise.
@YoNumberOneStunna Really? You think that? The new taurus, fusion, and the new upcoming vehicles like the focus, fiesta, and edge are going to be awesome.
@gunzkevin if you don't like Toyota, buy a Honda! I used to work for Honda, and I saw everything we had to do to make sure that everything was in top premium working order before it left the plant lot. They have much better resale value than a Ford, Chevy, and even Toyota. The only reason I have a Toyota is because Honda doesn't have the Honda Civic version of the Toyota Matrix. If Honda ever makes a Matrix version of a hatchback, that will be my next car.
@YoNumberOneStunna I agree! My dad had a 1990 Honda Accord, and he finally got rid of it in 2003 with 440,000 kms on it. He now has a 1998 Honda Accord, and it is still running. That car still probably has another 2-3 years left on it
where's your proof? I hate people who jump on the bandwagon when no one has proved any of this. There were many complaints about unintended acceleration in other vehicles under different brands before this. Drivers are just dumb in general. The media picked up on this and now it's a paranoia. One case a woman claimed unintended acceleration in a toyota that wasn't even using drive by wire system.
@NitroGadvRules Guess you been lied to about Ford. My parents had a 1984 Ford LTD, and that was a piece of shit. Within 3 years of buying it brand new, they had nothing but problems with it. Next car was a brand new 1990 Honda Accord, and that thing lasted for over 440,000 kms until 2003 when my parents finally sold it. Then my parents bought a used 1998 Honda Accord, and it is still running. So in essence you are wrong about Ford. Ford maybe better than Chrysler but simply not the best!
so many pople are going to jail for filing fake claims that thier prius cant stop.. IF YOU STEP ON THE BRAKES THE CAR WIL STILL STOP SHORTER THEN A FORD TAURUS>
i know you guys are smart drivers and know what you are doing. but when you do this kinda testing i think you should be on a private track cause i just know some idiot will do this this afternoon on his way from work and get rear ended its just gonna happen. ppl are dumb.
Most of the problems on Toyotas that has injured or killed their driver/occupants has been where the car DID NOT respond accordingly to your video demonstration.
The driver(s) DID try to apply their Brakes AT THE SAME time as their car was stuck in full throttle, but their vehicle didn't cut-off / reduce throttle. Or, their car didn't go into Neutral when they tried to Reverse, Hold down Stop/Start switch, etc
So your Demo ONLY works on cars that's NOT in FAIL mode.
the toyota pedal problems are real!! you thought that you could just nuke japan and not have any problems, uhh well think about that next time you drive your JDM car think about it :P, they know your american!
Are the parts from Toyoto made in USA ? Did anyone mention that , where are the parts made in ? Fucking American just making news & trying to help fucking US car sales back on track !!!
The person on the news with the runaway Prius was a fake. The brakes cancels the engine so the brakes take over. While he said he had the brake and E-brake and it only slowed it down from 90s to 50s?
Every manufacturer has had issue and will continue to have issues with their cars weather mechanical, electrical or just user error. Toyota has given us reliable cars for many years and if just because of a few incidents everyone wants to make a big deal and continue to harp on this then I say get over it and get on with your lives. SHIT HAPPENS
Yea. Don't any of you remember the Ford Pinto? Intentional fireball on wheels. Ford's still here today even though they deliberately made the car unsafe by skimping on materials. Manufacturers make mistakes, and Toyota is still better than a lot of other brands.
You are officially a sucker...the media is your ultimate source of information...
Maybe years down the Road people will realize this is pretty much BULLSHIT...maybe a few cars are "messed up" but don't you think the media is bought and sold to destroy toyotas reliable image?
@KaseemD I'm sorry if i offended you but i was just making a joke. im an automotive enthusiast and i can appreciate any good car but i just dont think the prius brings anything to the table. if your looking to go green why not buy a vw tdi. you get better styling(my opinion) and a sportier more fun to drive package.
as far as toyotas image most of the people i know still consider them to be a very reliable so im not too sure where you got that from. if you like the prius thats your opinion and your entitled to it, but please don't call me a sucker and claim i get all my info from the media
Why are people defending toyota..FIRST OF ALL gas pedals SHOULD NOT GET STUCK ...second of all hundreds of people have been killed/injured from this ...TOYOTA IS FAIL
@TommyV246 yeah and hundreds of people have died from drunk driving, off roading and running red lights but they still happen its the risk people take everyday and if you cant accept the risk dont take it.
First of all get your facts straight..... Total known deaths due to the Stuck Throttle is..... wait for it....34. This was as of February 16 2010.
And second, the media is the big problem with this. I agree something needs to be done to fix the throttle issues, but the entire situation has been blown up by the media.
The same was the Ford Explorer tire situation. The tires were not properly inflated. It was proven, but that was good so it wasn't in the media. They only want the drama.
Don't you think every car manufacture including gm and toyota have screwed up realy bad before, WERE they try to cover it up as a driver error or rare defect. KEEP A LOW PROFILE ABOUT IT. Thats what this looks like to me. Honda mest up too . its costly error.
@TommyV246 Yeah, and 50,000 other people die on the road every year because the are just crap drivers. I guess we should ban driving. This is a non-issue. Anyone that has died because of this "stuck-throttle-Toyota thing" is a complete MORON and would have probably died anyway from forgetting to breathe.
I just want to rear-end that car with gas guzzling Mercedes Benz S65 6.2 Twin Turbo V12.

@midengineZ06 If people are so stupid that they can't figure out how to stop when the accelerator is wide open maybe there should be a new evaluation for their driver license. It's not the cars that are bad it's the people driving them.

Works just fine as long as the computer works, but what happens if the computer glitches? Will the brake override the throttle?? Is it on a separate circuit?
matrox 1 year ago
@matrox brake will always override the throttle. if not computer wise, just performance wise. in repeated tests with multiple cars, trucks, and suvs, including toyota and other cars, they were taken to speeds of 65+ and with the throttle fully pressed the brake was applied. the braking distance only increased by a couple yards. only problem is your brakes will overheat if you keep doing that. this whole toyota thing is blown out of proportion by idiots

Where is the outrage, everyone should be wearing helmets with beany caps grounded and rope harnasses to prevent death.
Where is the outrage, I certainly don't see many with lighting grounded beany cap or rope harnass walking around the cities!

Mo15084, the USA highway death were as high as 50,000 in the 1960-70's. With the development of antilock brakes, disc brakes, better tires, more predictible engine and transmission performance, better construction of passenger zone. Less people are getting killed. The latest from NTHSA is slightly over 30,000 death per year from drunks, reckless and neg drivers!
myHome109 1 year ago

Vanakatherock, So there is a software glitch in the computer for the transmission switch input. There is a completely separate input from the brake switch that disengage the engine if the brake is fully depressed.
Separate and redundant switch for transmission input and brake input, separate line of code for separate switch to turn off and disengage the engine without defeating power steering, power brakes!
myHome109 1 year ago
It really takes a smart person to insert software into hydraulic fluid or onto a mechnical cable operated emergency brake system!
myHome109 1 year ago
Vanakatherock,
In a Prius there are even more backup redundant systems (Most Configured this way):
ABS, Power Assist, Hydraulic, Hydraulic cross metering block, Mechnical cable emergency brakes.
Hydraulic system can be defeated on one side of the car and the redundant system will still stop. ABS system is redundant, Power Assist is redundant and Engine Over-ride is redundant and you still have cable emergency brakes!
myHome109 1 year ago
Vanakatherock, software glitch would not effect all systems.
Braking system had Triple redundant system, ABS, Hydrualic, and emergency + engine throttle override when fully depressed!
Can you please explain to me where do you insert the software in hydraulic fluid or in a mechnical cable controlling the emergency brake?

i hate hybrids, but the 2nd gen prius looks kinda kool
TurboGHST 1 year ago

YoNumberOneStunna 1 year ago
No, its a software issue plain and simple. Toyota doesn't want to admit it because that kind of recall would be extremely expensive to fix and hard to implement. Go buy a Ford before you bash American Cars. They make the best cars out there at the moment. Look at their stock performance in the last year.
NitroGadvRules 1 year ago 2
what does stock performance determine? so your saying hp determines whether the cars good or not if so your dumb theres alot more that goes into it
bronxborn243 1 year ago
Buy a Ford? I'll buy a Chevy instead of a Ford. they might be the best cars at the moment but Toyota been dominating for the past several years. Imports in general are dominating the us. People are realizing that imports are better in terms of performance and quality wise.

@YoNumberOneStunna Really? You think that? The new taurus, fusion, and the new upcoming vehicles like the focus, fiesta, and edge are going to be awesome.
gunzkevin 1 year ago
@gunzkevin if you don't like Toyota, buy a Honda! I used to work for Honda, and I saw everything we had to do to make sure that everything was in top premium working order before it left the plant lot. They have much better resale value than a Ford, Chevy, and even Toyota. The only reason I have a Toyota is because Honda doesn't have the Honda Civic version of the Toyota Matrix. If Honda ever makes a Matrix version of a hatchback, that will be my next car.

jrcook80 1 year ago
@jrcook80 Thank You!
YoNumberOneStunna 1 year ago
where's your proof? I hate people who jump on the bandwagon when no one has proved any of this. There were many complaints about unintended acceleration in other vehicles under different brands before this. Drivers are just dumb in general. The media picked up on this and now it's a paranoia. One case a woman claimed unintended acceleration in a toyota that wasn't even using drive by wire system.
limebread 1 year ago
@NitroGadvRules Guess you been lied to about Ford. My parents had a 1984 Ford LTD, and that was a piece of shit. Within 3 years of buying it brand new, they had nothing but problems with it. Next car was a brand new 1990 Honda Accord, and that thing lasted for over 440,000 kms until 2003 when my parents finally sold it. Then my parents bought a used 1998 Honda Accord, and it is still running. So in essence you are wrong about Ford. Ford maybe better than Chrysler but simply not the best!

dcengland 1 year ago 2
I agree with midengineZ06.

There was ONE reported inceident of the throttle sticking before Toyota recalled the cars.
The problem isnt an electrical one, it is a physical one of the pedal catching on the floor.
The amount of scummy twats that are now trying to claim against Toyota for a quick buck is corrupting the figure on how bad the problem actually is.
setra23 1 year ago
First of all get your facts straight..... Total known deaths due to the Stuck Throttle is..... wait for it....34. This was as of February 16 2010.
And second, the media is the big problem with this. I agree something needs to be done to fix the throttle issues, but the entire situation has been blown up by the media.
The same was the Ford Explorer tire situation. The tires were not properly inflated. It was proven, but that was good so it wasn't in the media. They only want the drama.
