This show was the best. It would never work today because America doesn't want to be entertained, it wants to be nosy! That's why there are "reality" shows. I see people at work saying, "Did you hear what Sara said to her boyfriend last night?" Then you find out they are talking about TV shows! They think they are really there.

We're still putting social security in in a lump sum and getting it back in dribs and drabs. Since so many retirement-age people have to work anyway to make ends meet, they should make social security optional.

Today pension + a social security check = taxation by the IRS. And believe me,they do not mind taking your SS check to pay your taxes,no matter what your situation is. Whitman held it down when Redd was "holding out". I wonder why his spin off didn't get a chance. I think S&S could have had a little 70's sitcom empire. Hate to say it but Redd messed up a little by leaving a second time. I think on the strength of S&S a couple spin offs could have worked. Maybe Grady and a spinoff with Esther,Woody and Daniel. Or Rollo and Lamont and a "bachelor" pad? But towards the last two seasons the writting got kind of weak IMHO. It didn't jump but came close,lol!!

As for this episode itself, Grady is more then entitled to the second check, seeing as the government confiscated his money and held it hostage for years under threat of imprisonment. If he had invested it in conservative government bonds he would have easily doubled his money in 40 years time.

Thank You for another favorite episode from Season 4. While Redd Foxx was abscent from most of Season 3 and 4 due to contract disputes, Whiman Mayo(Grady)did a Great Job holding it down and making the show a success. I am such a huge fan of the show!!!
