What about Charles Chamberland's accidental discovery of vaccination?

He was part of Louis Pasteur's team working on a cure for chicken cholera. He was supposed to infect (and kill) a batch of chickens, and was given a liquid culture to inject them with. He left the liquid uncovered for many days while on holiday.

When Camberland returned, he injected the chickens but they did not die. He then injected them with a fresh batch and they still did not die.

Thus vaccination was discovered.

Hoffmann was a fan of psychedelics, he worked on psilocybin, of course he WANTED to make a psychoactive product out of rye fungus. The alkaloid in rye fungus was known to have neuro-toxic effects, as there are recorded stories of mass hysteria in XVIth century villages, when they ate bread with contaminated rye.

What is accidental is that he didn't WANT to test this sample (the n°25) WHEN he tested it.

@DaZeDmerlin This book's cool because of the legacy, but if you allow me to give you good titles on this subject, if you haven't read already: Aldous Huxley's "the doors of perception", and most of all Carlos Castaneda's "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge". The book is fascinating as it depicts the man's initiation of indian rituals during 5 years. This book was actually presented as his master's thesis in anthropology. It's THE absolute must-read. Blows your mind.
