@Strobelightstepper They used an animatronic whale for some of the shots in the first movie too. I think there were just some parts that Keiko couldn't be used for, eg. jumping over the wall. And besides it would have been wrong to bring Keiko back in after he had been set free.

It broke my heart when my mom told me they used robotic whales for this and the third movie. But to me it will always be Keiko in these movies because that's the way ALL Orcas should live, and Keiko is the best example of what people can do if they set their mind to it.

Keiko was ONLY used in the first movie. They used animated robots in the final two movies. When they started filming the second movie, Keiko's rehabilitation to the wild effort had already begun and he was no longer involved in the filming, just the bots.

If you don't believe me, watch this video over again and pause it at 4:20. If you look to the top right corner behind where "Jesse" is sitting, you'll see a Keiko bot. On a truck trailer, on land, and dry. Clearly not a real, live Orca.

As I've said before, according to real, actual fact, he was already being reintroduced to the wild by the qualified trainers, marine biologists and others involved in his project. If you pay close attention to the second and third movies, computerized special effects added to clips of wild orca's made it to look as if Willy, Luna and Littlespot were in that pod. All other close up scenes were robots. Sorry. :)

The Free Willy Foundation was then formed, and he was airlifted to the Oregon Coast Aquarium, in the US. By the time the third movie was in production (1997) Keiko was already trained for the wild and soon he would be airlifted again, to his final and original home in Iceland.

You can easily tell that they only used robots for Willy, because the robots look way different. Same goes for the first scene of Free Willy 1, where they capture Willy. You should watch the movies again, you'll see that they are robots by the way they move :)

They didn't put him in a sea pen or somewhere else for the movies, he stayed in his tank in Reino Ventura and in Oregon the whole time. I haven't seen a definite release date yet, but sometime next year. Bindi Irwin is the new main character (Willy, Jesse, etc aren't in the movie) and she has to help a baby whale get back home, when someone wants to keep him for an amusement park.
