No one is suggesting that we do that, but if you abolish Social Security entirely and tell folks they are on their own you still wouldn't balance the budget!
I think what we need is a balanced approach, significant cuts in entitlements and moderate tax increases. That's what retired Republicans have called for and I think they're right!
Social Security will be gone in a decade anyway because its supposed surplus is a bunch of IOUs. Medicare is the biggest problem of all, nearly one trillion dollars, all it does is cause price inflation in medicine. I find it hilarious that people call Bushes medicare part D prescription benefit corporate welfare. If that is true then what is the rest of medicare? Fact is they are right medicare is corporate welfare funded by money stolen by the government from people throughtax
@BeaveHolio Social Security is solvent until 2037 and the only reason it goes into trouble ten is because our elected officials kept raiding it's trust fund to pay for other things! If we can get the folks in Washington to stop acting like they're 5 years old we can fix the same way Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neil did nearly 3 decades ago! No politician will ever touch Medicare because seniors are the most active voting block! It has a 3% overhead 98% satisfaction and is loved by so many!
....love to hear Oboomer and Odonnell talk about how fortunate I've been to get up at 3 am and get to bed at 10 pm, in order to make the kind of income I want.
As I recall, I made a conscious decision to do so---it wasn't a matter of being "fortunate".
On the topic of taxes, Libs will never get the essential nature of taxation: we all are in the business of COLLECTING taxes from each other to pass on to the Bureaucracy. You can't tax your neighbor without taxing yourself.
