  • Never heard of Tan Dun before... but I must say I became a fan of his instantly it's such a joy to watch him conduct... that energy and spirit. :)

  • @cggfg

I agree, I'd never heard of him before.

But he puts so much into conducting, and he really seems to enjoy it. :)

  • he holds the baton very weird.......

  • THIS IS NOTHING BUT PERFECTION!!!!

  • Was fuer eine Scheisse!!!

  • wheres the scores?

  • he's so good at subdividing every set of counts...

he changes it from 4 counts to 2, back to 4, then just one swipe each measure.

    fantastic!

for other people, it might seem like bad conducting,

but it'z all just timing, count, and haha facial emotion:D

very very very good role model and all around performance

  • I can't find the music!

  • very good!!!!!!! ;-)

  • HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAH

  • i dont think hes good at conducting

  • and you suck at speaking english

    Stop the hating!

  • Looks like the end is close - good luck to all, and have fun in New York to whoever gets it!

  • Sounds like a song you might play at the Olympics.

  • it does! I think in one vid. Tan Dun says that it is.

  • *rollin on floor laughin my ass off* 3:35 & 3:45 hahahahah hes such a good comedian

  • I have never seen a conductor that loves his job more than this guy!

  • Comment removed

  • I thought I was going mad!

I'm so glad someone else noticed this!

I was wondering why none of the recordings I was hearing had the 3 beeps at the begining and now i know - the were using this version..... man i just wasted about 3 hours of recording time trying to figure this out!

  • 0:28 to 0:32 first cut. 1:32 to 1:36 second cut.

  • Your uniqueness as a conductor is very amazing. It's almost like you have a 'modern way' of conducting, haha! Forgive my sillyness, on the other hand, the tune and tempo of this piece is very heart warming. Keep up the great talents, for playing instruments is a gift. Cheers to all the playist great job in keeping the steady and punctual tempo. -Lupita.

  • its called conducting. :)

  • 0:42 to 1:44 made me feel nice inside... Beijing Olympics ftw

Anyways, can't wait to see some of that music.

I play violin. Any other violinists here?

  • I am a violinist and I'd love to join the YT Symphony Orchestra, but I'm not old enough. :(

  • i'm also a violinist and im in the process of trying out for the Symphony

  • Hey people, please watch the OTHER strings & harp video without music, the recording version, and compare it with this one.

I think they fail in the gap at 3:35 of the other video, The piece should end at 4:45 NOT at 4:37, cause the intro of the other video is 13 seconds long, there are 8 seconds missed at the end.

please check it out and tell me if I´m wrong, maybe I made a mistake when I was counting

    thanks

  • Yeah, i think the audio was added on afterward which resulted in timing problems

  • all videos on youtube have at least of a lag on them when they are uploaded. you can notice gaps in the video where they have tried to correct this timing to try and match with the sound as best as possible. try watching other conductors, you will see what i mean. there is at least some delay.

  • wow hegots off beat a little like in 3:45 where he shows the excessive youthfulness(i uess its a good thing)

  • haha the beginning sounds like mission impossible.. with the tremelo.

  • I´m not sure but I think Mr. Tan Dun made the video without music, and then somebody added the orquestra sound. That´s probaly the reason of the "bad timing" of the conductor.

    This video is very confusing...

  • Nice~ he is a great conductor,

but something is missing, it makes me feel his timing wasn't right~

i can feel that the conductor was a bit faster than the orchestra, some of the member might got the wrong signal.

    Well just my opinion,

    he is a good conductor though~ =]

  • He has so much youth and energy that,if you mute 3:45 onwards and show your friends who dunno about him, they would laugh mad!

  • HAHAHAHA MADE MY DAY

  • That made my day! I love his enthusiasm!!

  • yeah his conducting isn't perfect with the music - he wants to conduct US but he has to conduct towards the music as well...

  • Energetic conducting but small beats! When he's in 3, his "2" has very little horizontal movement on his conducting plane. Near the end (around 4:16), the music is way behind his beat, it's almost distracting to look at him. Makes the downbeat in measure 143 very confusing.

    Patético

  • i could play the trumpet solo really really slowly

  • what do those guys doo.... why si it hard? i dont get what they do

  • conductors? they conduct the band players... the song would likely go heywire without them

  • Most of their work is done before the performance, they are like a director of a movie, they tell the individual players or sections how to best play their part. Their arm waving is a bit like visualisers you sometimes see in music players, it helps the musicians "see" that they're to play. The arm waving during the performance is usually mostly for show, all the hard work has been done during rehearsals. Hypothetically, throw an orchestra into a room and ask them to perform. not gonna work well

  • ooooh ok ty

  • I just lost hope in making it.

  • Oh my...I can play half of it slowly, and from the part with allegro vivace to the end slowly. I think it should have an accelerando...but ah well this thing is tough enough. Great conducting!

  • yessss the allegro vivace to the end is soooo fun to play! (im doing violin part on guitar though)

  • yeah, i think so 2, chaos850

  • im going to try out

  • Yeah this video only conducts the bass guitar part

  • does anyone know how to get the music to audition for the piece??

  • Go to the "user's" page for this video to get information about auditioning and the sheet music.

  • I like this piece.

  • The part at 2:52 is pretty awsome with the decending accidentals. ThoseGreatKids is right, there should be a tuning note, it sounds a little bit off from my tuner.

  • If you have a MIDI program on your computer, tune by the A it gives you, that should match the track here.

It's still weird to try and play as if part of an orchestra without the visual cues from other players in addition to the conductor. I'm going to need to buy a good pair of headphones...

  • Hello! Is there a tuning note?

Also, the "Connect With symphony" links (like "Send Message," "Add Comment," etc.)do not work.

  • look at how he hold the baton! i've never seen anyone old it like that before

  • dudes gonna take out an eye

  • Interesting.

  • Must be me, but almost all the instruments that he waves his stick for are pretty much the same.

No I'm not trying to piss anyone off.

  • Well duh. It's all in same time signature.

  • I know what your saying. I'd prefer if he'd cue instruments where their they should be physically(I.E violins to the left.)

At 2:13, does that theme intentionally sound like Beethoven's 3rd (Eroica?)

  • That's most definitely a quote from the Eroica... I guess, hence the title. But did you also notice that the main theme is very familiar?? It's the same one they used on NBC during the Olympics... I guess he must've composed it for the Olympics first.

  • Where can I find a good recording of the Olympic theme?

I had this in my head all day... Its quite good!

  • It is Eroica- its one of the string bass's audition pieces. Also, in an interview he did, he said that he wrote the piece during the olypmics based on what he was hearing around him.

  • from the little i know, i think he's supposed to be conducting YOU. You can use this vid just so you have a conductor while you record your peice and submit it to YT Symphony.

  • Hate to admit it but, with his conducting I'd be a little lost at first just watching his expressions. But his Conducting is impeccable! Love it!

  • He's look so happy.

  • Esta muy bueno el proyecto...

lo estudiare y mandare mi grabacion...

    espero quedar seleccionado...

  • It's perfect! I love it!
