female operatic vocals were first performed in Celtic Frost's 'Necromantical Screams' (1985), combined with male vocals

also,the doom metal band 'the 3rd and the mortal' has exclusively used female operatic vocals earlier than nightwish. check out their song 'commemoration' which was released in 1996

but definetely nightwish used this kind of vocals in a unique way: oceanborn is my fave album

still i prefer floor over tarja, for her passion as u mentioned

@domiukas1 Tarja is the queen of opera, and if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't even know about Floor. However, Tarja is just not as diverse as Floor is. Whether this is by her choice or not, I don't know. But Tarja is still very good, and ranks up there with the top contenders.

She is amazing!!!!! She is the only singer I know with such power, beauty, and range. Who else can scale from alto easily into contralto or saprano and do it with such a pretty tone and power. Then turn around with opera and the same range. Then just do a 360 and growl!
