I had ten to do. Prior to watching this one used to take me a whole morning! Looking forward to my next brood. Male is at it as I write! Many thanks Mark.
@MMountainEscape If you don't want to keep the blood, then simply hanging it after skinning/gutting should take care of the blood. I think thats the reason he said to salt it too, so it can help draw out any blood that was left behind.
I've seen my aunt skinning rabbits but she skins the animal before cutting into it. That way you won't find any fur inside. And she always starts with the lower feet without cutting the head off. The brain tastes nice... You can try marinating the meat in olive oil with some spices. It makes for a awesome launch the next day.
@MMountainEscape Hang it by its hind legs and cut its throat. If you're going to gut it yourself(ie. you caught the rabbit), then hng it by its back legs, cut its throat and whilst you're gutting it the blood will drain out. Unless you want to keep the blood for that stew which actually uses the blood(forgot its name), then you should probably stick a container under it :P
You can roast rabbit but it has a tendency to dry out, I would soak it in a salt/sugar/water solution for atleast 24 hours. As well as baste (sp?) the meat while its cooking. Frying works quite well and is very tasty :)
@gman0345 I'e found braising the rabbit whole makes it come out tender. Basically a roasting dish, put your rabbit and some veges in the bottom, salt + pepper, then cover tightly in foil and cook for 2-3 hours. Basically steams it and comes out like it did in the video(meat falling off the bone).
Wonder if you could make a burger patty with the rabbit after you picked it from the bones, since you said frying works well for it...hmm. Guess I need to get a rabbit now.
Hi, a way i learned here in Australia by an old rabbiter, to skin, make a small incision in the skin along the back, and basically peel it open....., dont have to worry about the fine bits like doing it this way
hey, if you as an average teenage girl is even thinking about trying this, then you are definetly emotionally (and probably phisically) stronger than most girls. :)
this was extremely helpful. I'm just some random 17 year old girl who plans on going out into her yard and shooting a rabbit to see if I have the balls to pull thumper's guts out and eat him. my mom would never forgive me if she found out I killed an animal....
After boil, is the meat ok to deepfreeze for a few months, and will it still be good and tasty when i heat it up again? Thanks for the video by the way
This was an amazing video for instructional purposes. I shot a rabbit in my back yard and had no idea how to skin it. After watching this video I had complete success in skinning and preparing the meat. Albeit I did mutilate the pelt which was tossed out, but the meat will be eaten tonight. Thank you very much Mr. Gilchrist!
@TurtleTunfungul naaa it was just a paid actor like Rodger, Buggs or bigwig, the rabbit gets str8 back up after they finish filming, don’t you worry :)
I hear that rabbit, and especially rabbit is very "gamey." Is this true? I do not like lamb or venison at all, but I love chicken and fish...does this mean that there is little chance of me liking rabbit at all? Im thinking of trying it but would like to cook at home first to taste before I ever get it in a restaurant in front of people.
i'm no hunter and unless there was no other option I couldn't kill anything but a fish. But i recently came to believe that hunting to feed yourself is okay. I dont understand how people could waste it though as it died so you could eat.
I am having a BBQ this weekend and I am about to purchase 5 rabbits. I am so glad this video was created. I would not have known about the soaking in salt water. I am going to pressure cook the rabbits though b/c two hours of boiling is too long.
This is a great video! It’s well made, well executed and very informative. You’ve shown just how simple the process is. Coming from New York City to South Carolina, this is a whole new experience for me. Oh, by the way, I’m with PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals). Laus Deo
Excellent! Brillaint presentation of expert information. Thank you for producing such an informative, well crafted video about this. You gave me exactly the information I was looking for.
I see too many people who try to hunt with a 50 dollar gun and end up hitting a rabbit in the ass or guts only to have it get away and suffer and die later. Spend the extra 50 or so bucks and get a decent gun with a scope if your going to hunt but there is no need to spend thousand on a effing pellet gun
If you do not shoot air rifles, do not comment on air rifles. If you say the word 'gamo' i know you are a NOOB!!!!
Fact: you need 3 ft/lbs to the side of a rabbits skull to kill it. A .22lr powder burning rifle gives to 250!!! way too much. A rabbit isnt a tank. my target rifle which is sub 12ft/lbs is still doing 3.5ft/lbs at 100yards. At 65 you will not find the pellet
@timfoye1 looks like someone takes airguns a little too seriously...for the average joe who is most likely going to go to big 5 and buy a pellet gun why would you get anything below 1000fps that can shoot supersonic with a pba round? the accuracy is drastically improved and for everyone who isnt an expert markman such as yourself has a much better chance of hitting the head.
You do not need 1000ft/sec. Just dont use a 400ft/sec pistol using wadcutters. A std chinese $50 springer rifle traveling at 650ft/sec will enter and exit cleanly out to 35yards. My target springer kills out to my comfort zone 65yards max and it only does 800ft/sec. I kill hares as well. Rabbits are like butter - you wont find pellets inside them
@gootch420 You need to make sure your using a pellet gun that shoots at least 1000fps that way the pellet will exit the rabbit and you wont have to dig it out of the meat. Lead pellets are ok but I would recommend getting the gamo pba pellets that are made of alloy.
@friken0frank2 the reason a rabbit bleeds is because when the heart beats, it forces the blood out of the wound, because it is dead, the blood is absorbed into the organs
i shoot about 10,000 rabbits a year and all of my methods are based on high volumes of rabbits shot, all the other people only ever shoot one so it doesn't make any differance to them
@friken0frank2 because the heart pumps blood out of the body and if your dead the heart stops itll drip bloods but it wont be flinging blood out of its guts
Mark, Fantastic video. The best training on the subject matter I have ever seen. I've been hunting rabbits in California for over 40 years and I thought I was good at dressing a rabbit; however, your method is superior. My method of pulling the skin off first sometimes gets messy when the stomach lining accidentally tears and I end up with torn intestines (worst smelling of all wild game).
@Redfox0987654321 Aim for and shoot the head with a .17HMR to and including .22WMR sized rifle, or sometimes pistol. Anything smaller like a pellet or BB gun does not have enough impact energy to do the job and will maim, not usually kill. Then, you'd have to risk losing him in the brush or finish him mercifully. Anything larger and if you miss and get a body shot and you'd have too much energy transmitted to the body and you'll have an exploding rabbit and not much left on which to dine. dj
@gootch420 - if you check your states wildlife website, there will be information on there that will help you to know whether there are certain things to worry about or not. generally, if you cook rabbit meat thoroughly, there's nothin to worry about
@gootch420 cottontail is great to eat. I live in california and we hunt and eat them all the time and this is the best way to prepare them. I usually poach then bread and fry them or make a stew.
That doesn't have anything to do with it being cleaned properly, cleaning an animal is removing everything you don't eat from and preserving the meat...All I was saying is that there were a few parts most remove still left on when he was done
Holy shit this man makes it seem really easy o.o I could never do it without gloves, feeling squishy guts under my finger nails doesn't sound pleasant
Im gona sub.. been hunting my whole life killed and prepped quite a few deer, Last year i had a 75 yard shot at a rabbit with an airgun that i had sighted in at 50.. couldve easily taken it but didnt know how exactly to skin/gut and cook it
Try doing about 100 in a day. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuun! I don't really care for the way he skinned and gutted the rabbit. I hang mine, then cut around all 4 feet, make a slit on the inside of the thigh up to the foot on both sides, then work my hands in under the skin peeling the hide around the legs then yank it all off in one go like he did. When its hanging around the rabbits head, I cut the head off. Then Slit the belly and the guts fall out due to gravity. Was off poop and fur, then freeze or cook.
Wtf is a rubbit?

More or less. You always have to check the rabbits eyes for white cloudiness and their liver for white spots, these are signs of myxomatosis...
You also want to fully remove the abdominal wall and everything from the guts, make sure you pull all that crap out, and your good to go...

Make sure you roll the rabbit in the few pellets (shit) ejected as this man did.

I think he slit the rabbits throat.... my uncle is a butcher and he slits the dead animals throat then cuts it up
