The Sudler Trophy is supose to be awarded for the "highest standards in musical standards, innovative marching routines and contributions". Why is it that there are SEVERAL marching bands on there that dont represent the musical and marching side well, at all. I agree it is a popularity contest and who has most exposure. All names on the list since 1982 are big name universities that have the most exposure. Try other and smaller universities, I KNOW they would find something better!
How many games does the UofA band perform at these days? I don't know how many different shows UCA (or HSU, or Tech, or??) performed this year, but I know that things have changed a lot over the years.
WAY back in the old AIC days, Arkansas bands used to play at nearly every game - WE usually had a different show each time we returned to Estes Stadium - but repeated shows for away games.
Oh - and while on the subject of the UofA band - I have always had respect for the Razorback Marching Band, but have never been overly impressed with the overall quality (especially with the musical aspect). HSU, Arkansas Tech, and UCA at varying times have all had better quality musical productions than UofA.
I also participated in joint concerts with the top concert performing groups (UCA Wind Ensemble and UofA Symphonic Winds). Still a musical difference.
the U of A band performs at all home games and performs at the Little Rock games as well, although we only send a pep band to away games we still go to SEC championship(when we're in it!) and our bowl game. And if musical Quality was an issue than we would have never won our 2006 Sudler Trophy!!!!
Who doesn't understand about some college bands not being pumped up high school programs?
I haven't seen any university bands in Arkansas that sound like a high school yet. Well, I take that back - I have, but I won't give the name of that school.
By the way, HSU and UCA are not pumped up hs bands.
The show concept is a great idea and UCA does hold a reputation as being one of the stronger college bands in Arkansas, but this specific performance was probably an early one and thus wasn't as polished as they probably wanted.
I will say the drill is very interesting to watch, there just needs to be more movement and less "park and bark" as my old director used to call it. My favorite set is around 1:45, just so you know. :)
Yes - I believe this was the home opener for the season. Also keep in mind the primary intended audience - high school kids...
I didn't get an opportunity to see them later on, but have heard that they cleaned up a lot. Maybe someone from the BMB will eventually post (or another video from later in the season) will get posted.
Not to take anything away from the Sudler Trophy, but check the criteria. Musical quality is just one factor. Spirit and contribution to the sport and to the university as a whole is a major component. No-one will every argue with the Razorback Band's spirit or contribution!
There are some college band programs in this country that are a major step above anything Arkansas has to offer - that have not received that award.
It is the spirit of the 'Back Band that I have always had respect for.
Wow...I had so much fun this day!!! Except for when the high school bands were supposed to march onto the field....no one did. I was on the front line in the percussion thingy and everyone was totally off and didnt march. I was freaking out.
We weren't as good in previous years. I watch the vids we have on youtube and I agree that we were really sloppy, or not musical, or this/that/the other. I wish we did have a video of this year up, just so you could see the progress we've made in one year.
Sorry that I came across so roughly - I'm a music educator in training, wanting to focus in marching direction, actually, so this kind of stuff is kinda dear to me and I get defensive when it's an organization that I belong to.
Our numbers haven't changed much in the past three years - maybe a difference of ten or fifteen each year, at least that I'm aware of. This year is by far the most talented group of musicians the school's seen on the marching field in years, and I have the Director of Bands to back me up on that one. Not trying to make excuses, this video does not show our potential, nor does it convey our talent.
Blow smoke up your butt? A college grad....thats strange i figured most people out of college were mature enough to know that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all. Your band wasn't impressive at all compared to an average band, i don't know where you got the boldness to think that they were superior?
Yes, i do actually. I realize that you didn't go to or teach at this college, dumbass. I also realize that there are videos of your band on your page...which by the way were what I was talking about on my previous comment, they weren't that impressive. If that's your band, i feel sorry for you because you've got a hell of a lot of work to do.

Are you freaking stupid? AR-Kansas wouldn't know a band if it hit them in the face. Northwestern State would kill this band. If you really disagree then bring it. Lets shut up and let the bands to the talking.
Steven Smyth, the Bear Marching Band director is apparently doing a super job. I was really impressed with his professionalism and obvious dedication.
I also beg to differ, we did multiple shows while I was there 95 - 99

Whats the name of the UCA Fight Song>?
hogfan13 4 years ago
I am not a UCA grad/student but the melody of their fight song comes from a march by Karl King called The Purple Pageant...from the trio to be exact.
DTNSU 4 years ago
I can confirm that the UCA Fight Song does indeed come from the trio section of Karl King's "Purple Pageant.

I beg to differ. We did at least three different shows each year I was in the UCA band - 1987-1991.
And in recent years, I have watched UCA do at least two different shows in a season.

haha...right.
Most schools have MWF, 3-5 and that is it.

Not even worth arguing with someone who didn't experience the "practice" we had for this show.

you're right...it is't worth it for you.
I am a college graduate and now music educator and know more about marching bands than you ever will. So don't try and blow smoke up my butt.
There are a few UCA videos on youtube and I have YET to be impressed with any of them. So what are the excuses for those?

There might be a direct correlation in the band size growing slightly and not recruiting talent but numbers instead.

I'm glad I was able to make it from Colorado to see my old college marching band do a great job on Mass Band night. Go Baritones and Go Bears!
P.S. Very good on the half time plotting drill, finally something different!
