well, your friend is wrong. In fact Persia was the name Greeks called us, simply because they traditionally had city-states and they thought this is how Iranians should be called. But we can trace the name as far back as 2000 years to Sassanid dynasty. It simply means the land of Aryans and by that we are not referring to the erroneous interpretation i.e race during 19/20th century Europe. You can also see references in old Iranians poems like Ferdowsi which talks about Iranian nationalism.
